Chapter 2146: From Grandma

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Genevieve had arrived on Myrrandor only a couple of days ago.

She wanted to surprise Adam with her arrival. But when she reached home, she found a message left behind by him, stating that he was away on a mission and that it would be a while before he returned.

Genevieve did not wish to disturb Adam while he was away. So she had planned to ask Hannibal about Adam’s whereabouts.

If there was anyone who would know, then it was definitely Adam’s teacher.

And Hannibal did. He informed Genevieve that Adam was returning to Davos presently and that he should be here in a few months.

Genevieve and Moonie left the Rabbit Hole after finishing their dinner. The latter had been very awkward throughout the whole ordeal. Genevieve found it amusing. Her handmaid was someone whom she’d never seen lose her composure.

Moonie had requested that she not probe into Hannibal’s background. And Genevieve respectfully did not. Instead, her mind was occupied with thoughts about Adam and how she could give him a lovely surprise when he returned. After all, he still did not know she had arrived.

"My lady," Moonie suddenly called out.

The pair walked through the cobbled streets of Blue Borough, dimly illuminated by the lampposts.

"Yes?"

"How long have you known Hannibal?" she asked.

Genevieve shot her an intrigued glance. She replied honestly, "Everyone in Davos knows him. He’s quite famous. But before I met Adam, I had only heard of him. The Great Adventurer Hannibal, everyone calls him. They say he was the first to conquer the ninth-level dungeon of the Mountain Down Under."

"Are you saying that you came to know him personally after you met Adam?" Moonie asked.

"Yes." Genevieve nodded. "Adam works at Hannibal’s tavern sometimes."

Moonie’s blue eyes flashed with slight distaste at learning that her lady’s lover worked at a tavern—no matter who its owner was.

But it was Genevieve’s next words that stunned her.

"He’s Hannibal’s student," Genevieve said with a faint smile.

Moonie was silent for a long time, trying her best to hide her true emotions.

"I see," she said softly. "So he wields a whip-razor, then?"

Genevieve turned to Moonie with squinted eyes. "Yes," she said. "Yes, he does."

She would not make things difficult and uncomfortable for her handmaid by asking her about Hannibal. But Genevieve had other ways of finding out.

The pair finally arrived at 30 Faber Street.

"My lady, can you please reconsider my request?" Moonie asked respectfully.

"I’m sorry, Moonie." Genevieve smiled apologetically. "But Adam was adamant about not having any helpers in the house. He would be especially uncomfortable if he learned of your arcane rank. I cannot go against his wishes. This is his house."

"Then please allow me to purchase an estate on your behalf," Moonie suggested.

Genevieve laughed in delight. "Oh, Moonie. Purchase an estate? With what money?"

Moonie presented Genevieve with a ring. "A gift from Mistress Domitia. This is your inheritance from her personal coffers. She made sure that you would never want for anything."

Genevieve was stunned. "From Grandma?!"

She accepted the ring and scanned its contents. Her eyes widened even further. Suddenly, she felt like she was holding an entire world in her hands.

Even more surprising was that this came from the crone who would always beat her in the game of dice and take away all her money.

Genevieve was silent for a long time, simply unable to believe the sheer wealth inside the storage ring.

"My lady?" Moonie called out.

Genevieve snapped out of her daze. She clutched the ring tightly in her trembling hand.

"Let’s hold off on the purchase," she said.

Moonie turned to look at Adam’s manor. Compared to the Fortuna ancestral palace, this house was worse than a shack in her eyes.

"But how can a daughter of Fortuna live in such a..." She swallowed the harsh words forming in her mouth.

Genevieve laughed in amusement. "I’m quite fine living here, Moonie. You forget that I lived in a humbler apartment before I learned of my lineage from Aunt Valentina."

Moonie tried to think of ways to change her lady’s mind. It truly was unbecoming of a Fortuna to live in such a simple house. That too without any maids or servants!

"My dear Moonie, let me tell you something." Genevieve gently clasped Moonie’s hand and guided her up the stairs.

"There’s a reason why Adam doesn’t like having helping hands around. A part of him thinks that his presence will only ruin their lives. In his homeworld, Adam had a butler once upon a time. His name was Rowan. He was like a father figure to him. In the end, Rowan died in his service, and his death has haunted Adam ever since. Even after so many years."

Moonie was suddenly at a loss for words.

Genevieve deactivated the defensive barriers, allowing Moonie to set foot inside. Then she unlocked the main door and finally entered the manor.

"As for purchasing a house," Genevieve said with a chuckle, "I’d rather not. I’m more than content with living with Adam in this house. Besides..."

The two took a seat in the living room.

"Adam might be a little sensitive about me coming from such a wealthy background," Genevieve continued.

"He’s never said it outright, but I know that, deep down, he feels unworthy for some reason. He’s always been independent, Moonie. He’s used to relying on himself and solving his own problems.

"And now, suddenly, he has someone like me by his side, someone who comes from one of the Great Noble Houses and has access to wealth and resources he could hardly imagine growing up.

"I don’t think he resents me for it. But I suspect a part of him worries that he has little to offer me in return. That he might not be able to give me the life I deserve.

"And that’s precisely why I don’t want to make a big deal out of these things. I don’t want him to feel as though he needs to keep up with me or prove that he can provide for me."

She smiled as she stroked the raven band on her finger.

"I’m not with Adam because of what he owns or what he can give me. I’m with him because I love him. And I want him to understand that, in time, without feeling as though he has to change who he is to deserve me."

Moonie fell silent. She observed Genevieve’s expression, her smile, and the way she looked at that strange ring on her finger.

She sighed quietly. Convincing her lady any further was futile.

"Very well." Moonie nodded. "I will take up residence somewhere nearby, so I’ll always be at your beck and call."

"Thank you." Genevieve took Moonie’s hand in hers.

"It is my duty to serve you, my lady." Moonie smiled.

"By the way, did you find anything about Adam’s sister?" Genevieve suddenly asked.

"Not yet." Moonie shook her head.

"But fret not. It won’t be long before my people discover her whereabouts."
