Chapter 1242: The Background Lore

In front of the chairman of the National Hunter Association... Morpheus performed a major reveal that shook the other party.

"What?! But Father Constantine had no blood relatives. Everyone knows that.

So how could he be your uncle?!" asked Jung Gu-won, his countenance showcasing his bewilderment.

"Neither my uncle nor I are native to this country. Like, just, look at our names." he said and continued...

"You must have heard the story about how he came to this country after losing his family, right?" asked Morpheus.

"It wasn’t just his wife and son that died... it was also his brother and sister-in-law.

I am the son who survived that monster attack." revealed Morpheus with a firm tone.

"Uncle chose the priesthood because he had given up his will to live. I, on the other hand... blamed the Goddess for taking away my family.

I grew up very resentful of the world. For the first 10 years after coming here... I felt betrayed after he chose to dedicate his life to the church instead of raising me.

I felt abandoned and hence ran away." he revealed a pivotal part of the past.

"If you still don’t believe my words... Go to the church and ask the other priests about me.

And ask them how long I have been coming to meet him in the church using the excuse of confessions." iterated Morpheus.

"As for the reason behind my hatred for criminals and hunters alike...

I carry the mission to punish the sinners, bestowed upon me by none other than Father Constantine himself." said Morpheus as he dropped another heavenly revelation.

"I have laid bare all my truth in front of you. Whether you choose to believe it or not and go with my plans, where we both have a lot to gain... It’s all up to you.

So make a wise choice, Mr. Chairman." spoke Morpheus and handed him a burner cellphone.

He quietly left the bar, and the chairman also returned to his office because he had a lot to contemplate.

2 Days Later...

"So he was being truthful. All the priests we asked instantly recognized him as a regular visitor over the past 20 years.

Although they did not know that Morpheus was Constantine’s nephew... every single one of them admitted that they seemed very close.

Also, their logs revealed that Morpheus was the last person Father Constintine took the confession of before his death a week later." spoke Jung Gu-won as he revealed their findings.

"So he’s not a mere vigilante. He’s a knight on the holy crusade." spoke Han Du-sik.

Given their situation and Morpheus’ proposal... he had limited options.

But after this background check... he was certain the Morpheus could be trusted.

"It’s going to be a real shitstorm once all of it starts... but if he succeeds, there might truly be hope for this association and this country." spoke the chairman with a worn-out tone.

He took out the burner given by Morpheus and called the speed dial number.

As soon as Morpheus picked up the call, Han Du-sik revealed his decision...

"Let’s get started."

Everything that has happened so far... is what Morpheus actually wanted.

In reality, he was the one who hired all those mercenaries in the first place.

In the past 3 years, he had not only killed but also emptied the bank accounts of the criminals and hunters he chose to eliminate. Used the underworld connections from his old gang to make that money white and slowly but surely, amassed a considerable wealth over the years.

Fortunately for him, people who could hire their Cleanup Crew were primarily wealthy people who could afford their services, so Morpheus had a lot of cash gathered even if he did it patiently.

Most of the time, he did it to create a trail that the target took the money out of their accounts and savings and chose to disappear. Cash could not be tracked easily, so as time went on, he had the means to hire such a costly mercenary group who would dare to kidnap the Hunter Association Chairman’s daughter and pretend to ask him for a ransom.

Morpheus told them that this was just to create a diversion, and a day later, they were supposed to let the girl go. So even the mercenary group felt like this was just easy money, and they took the job.

Now, why did he target Han Du-sik?

It was a plan made many years ago. On the day he registered himself as an F-Rank hunter after father Constantine’s funeral. And also why he registered his hunter name as ’Constantine’.

Morpheus had developed a habit of not making his plans based on days or months... he planned for years.

The first set of eyes he had on Han Du-sik were the lower-level subordinates who were tied to the Jopoke that Morpheus worked for.

Many low-class hunters who didn’t have the money to buy fancy equipment and raid dungeons and towers, used the underworld organizations like theirs to enter illegally.

So Morpheus had no problem establishing a friendship based on mutual gains with these low-level employees, who also heard everything whenever there was a shift in the power struggle within the organization.

Han Du-sik was elected as the new chairman back then, so Morpheus had been trying to find out about what kind of person he was.

And that was to serve a bigger reason by itself.

The entire world currently has 438 known S-Rank hunters. Almost all of them were treated as National Treasures and held immeasurable influence in their respective nations.

The SS-Rank hunters were always the heads of powerful organizations like the Hunter Association or held high ranks in the military. The world had only 89 of them.

SSS-Rank Hunters were no different than the bastion of the nation’s might and held huge influence over all spheres such as politics, military, and commerce.

There were only 34 known hunters of that rank.

And lastly... There were the world disasters called the EX-Rank Hunters.

These were the people walking powerhouse that could even be considered a person with the power to destroy a country within a week.

And so far, there have been only 17 of them in the past 3 decades.

Due to the Hunter Killer class... Morpheus had to kill 10 hunters of the same rank or 1 from a higher rank to level up.

Thus, instead of hunting them one by one once he rose to the higher rank, like his current S-Rank... he preferred to gather them in the same place, such as dungeons and towers.

When one such opportunity arose over few weeks ago, Morpheus decided to act.

He marinated the meat for all this time, and now... the scrumptious meal was ready.

Whatever had to be done would be finished inside, and hence, Morpheus planned for all of this and orchestrated the kidnapping of Han Hae-rin just to make contact with Han Du-sik.

And now... he was going to get everything he wanted in a single sweep.

Finally... Morpheus, on the receiving end of the call, switched it off and spoke with a content smile.

"Success tastes sweetest to those who struggle the most."
