Alright phew. Damn, its hot.The next world we landed in was right in the middle of a tropical rainforest. Feeling the heavy, sticky heat enveloping my body, I couldnt help but mutter my thoughts aloud.
It really is sweltering. It feels like the heat is clinging to me, like ugh, this is gross, Tia said, fanning herself with her hand as she curiously looked around.
Id like to say lets find somewhere cooler but thats not an option, is it?
Yeah. Our entire area of activity in this world is mostly confined to this forest.
Ughhh
Even though Id already explained this beforehand, hearing it again made Tia grimace. Sure, being in the forest must be unpleasant for her, but if things got really bad, she could probably use her spirit magic to make herself more comfortable. Still, even for Tia, constantly using magic to counter mild discomfort would be tough.
Hah! Complaining wont change anything. Its probably better than just standing here, so lets get moving, I said with a laugh.
Right, were heading to those ruins, arent we?
Yeah. Its called Dakesitarmaor was it Damashitarke? Something like that
Its Dashiketarma. Its an ancient term meaning The Place Where the Gods Reside.'
Eh?!
Suddenly, a voice piped up nearby, and both Tia and I whipped our heads around to look for its source. But all we could see were trees in every direction.
Over here! Over here! Humans really lack awareness, dont they?
The voice came from below. When we looked down, we saw a bipedal humanoid mouse, about as tall as my knee, dressed in clothes. Wait right now, at this moment, of all times
A mouse?!
How rude! To confuse me, a member of the grand and noble Mousefolk, with some uncivilized creature lured by cheese into traps! Humans, I swear
Despite the explanation Id given earlier, Tia hadnt been prepared for this abrupt encounter. Her startled reaction earned her a disapproving glare from the Mousefolk man.
Then, from behind him, another figure emergeda bipedal cat carrying a large amount of luggage.
Nyaa. If the ancestors of the Mousefolk were mice, its not entirely wrong to call you that, is it?
Hold it right there, Nyamcket! If were going to say everyones the same just because of shared origins, then wouldnt that make cats and mice indistinguishable too? Treating all living beings as identical, regardless of intelligence, is far too extreme, dont you think?
Nya~, I wasnt saying that much. But at the very least, our ancestors were cats, and your ancestors were mice, no question about it, nyaa.
Well, that may be true, but
Um, who exactly are you two?
Oh, my apologies for not introducing myself sooner. I am Zurich, an archaeologist, and this here is my assistant and porter, Nyamcket.
Im Nyamcket, Nyaa. Nice to meet you.
The mouse, Zurich, clad in a dirt-colored jacket covered in pockets, puffed out his chest as he introduced himself. Meanwhile, Nyamcket, the cat with a fluffy coat of white and brown fur, about the same height as Tia, gave a leisurely wave and smiled warmly.
Tias body twitched at the sight of Nyamckets cuteness, so I quickly grabbed her arm to stop her.
Tia, dont even think about it.
?! I-I know, okay?! Im Lunaritia, an adventurer. And this is
Im Ed. Nice to meet you, I added, managing to keep Tia under control as I introduced us.
Zurich nodded approvingly.
Hmm, I like polite individuals. That said, what business do adventurers have at the Dashiketarma ruins? There shouldnt be anything valuable there for profit seekers, Zurich said with a faintly displeased expression. Understandably soscholars like him often viewed adventurers as mere treasure hunters who desecrate historical sites for personal gain.
Our goal is to survey the ruins. Specifically, were searching for the so-called Divine Throne said to be located in the deepest part of the ruins, I replied.
Oh?
Hearing this, Zurich twitched his nose ever so slightly.
The Divine Throne, eh? Its said to be there, sure, but no ones ever found it. Let me ask you, thenwhat do you intend to do if you find it? Bear in mind, its unlikely to be some portable treasure.
Well its hard to explain, but
Zurich squinted, the whiskers on his face twitching inquisitively. I scratched my head and smiled awkwardly.
I just really want to see it for myself.
You just want to see it?
Yeah. I mean, not to brag, but both Tia and I are skilled enough to make a living, and we live comfortably. Once thats settled, you start yearning for something more like romance, or intellectual curiosity. Yknow, discovering a hidden artifact no ones ever found, or seeing a landscape no ones ever seenit seems so cool and exciting, doesnt it?
Of course, there was a calculated element to my response. From my first run through this world, I knew Zurich, the hero of this realm, was driven by the same kind of curiosity. Tilting my answer to align with his interests was strategic.
But it wasnt a lie. Having traveled through countless worlds, meeting and parting with so many people, Id developed a genuine admiration for things that endure across time, unchanged.
Zurich studied my face intently before stroking his whiskers and breaking into a smile.
Chuchuchu! I see, I see! A young person who understands the romance of ancient timesthats admirable!
Nyaa~, Ed might be young, but Tias got long ears, so shes probably not all that young, right?
Me?! Thats not true!
At Nyamckets innocent observation, Tia turned away with a sheepish expression. Even if she was considered young among her kind, telling humans with an average lifespan of fifty years that she was over a hundred could hardly be called young.
Tia has spent long stretches of time in worlds without me, and even Ive become unnaturally long-livedfar beyond what would be normal for a regular human. At this point, all I can do is shrug it off and say, Well, mentally, at least, Im still young.
Well, well, lets not sweat the details, Nyamcket. Worrying too much about things like this will make your fur fall out.
Nyaa. You were just obsessing over tiny details earlier, and now youre saying the complete opposite. Thats so typical of you, Sensei, Nyamcket replied, tilting his head.
Chuchuchu! Flatter me all you want, but your paycheck wont increase. The best I can offer is two extra cans of Cal-food from the Mashingler Guild as a special bonus!
Nyaa! As expected from senseiso generous! (T/N: = Futopparada which means, generous and =Futo which means fat)
Generous?! Who said I was fat? Thats itbonus cancelled! No cans for you!
Nyaa Thats too cruel
Fine, Ill give you one can. But just one! Consider it a special favor.
Nyaa!
Nyamcket, who had been drooping his tail sadly, perked up instantly at Zurichs offer, his tail standing tall with happiness. His transparent display of emotions was so endearing it nearly made me grin just watching him.
The banter between Zurich and Nyamcket continued, lightening the mood. Nearby, Tia leaned over to me with a murmur:
Honestly, for a mouse and a cat, those two seem to get along pretty well.
They do. Well, peace is a good thing, I said as we watched the pair argue playfully.
Nyamckets cheerful energy and Zurichs lively responses were infectious. It seemed this party of adventurersno, heroeswas shaping up to be quite the entertaining group.
