Eight days until our destination. It sounded both short and long. No matter how fantastical the scenery might be, staring at it for an entire day would eventually become routineif not boring, at least something youd get used to. Noah Bryne was a large ship, but most of its space was filled with mysterious magical devices. I didnt dare touch them out of curiosity, knowing that breaking something by accident would lead to consequences I couldnt fix. That left us with only a few options: light exercise for personal training or chatting to pass the time. Luckilyor perhaps unluckilyafter leaving the , my basic needs had returned to normal, meaning I needed food and sleep again. At least those necessities filled some of the time. But considering we were traveling in the extraordinary outside of the world, relying on day-to-day activities to pass the time seemed like a waste.
Still, the fact that we hadnt encountered any unnecessary trouble was a blessing in itselfthough, of course, that didnt last.
Beeep! Beeep!
Whoa!? What the hell is this!?
It was the night of the third day after our departure. The sound, piercing and urgent, blared in the physical world, not in my head. I jumped out of my bed in a panic. For the record, Noah Brynes bed was made of some strange materialfirm but soft and kind of springy. It was surprisingly comfortable Anyway, thats not the point right now!
Hey, whats going on!?
[There is a problem. Please proceed to the deck.]
A problem? Got it, Ill be right there.
Answering the voice, I quickly stepped out of my roomonly to see that Tia had exited her room as well. Together, we hurried to the deck, where we immediately understood what the problem was.
What is this? A wall? Or a net?
Yeah, definitely a big problem.
Directly ahead of the ship was a wall of white light forming a grid-like pattern. The grid stretched endlessly in all directions, and somehow, I intuitively understood that this was the very thing enclosing the hundred alternate worlds I had journeyed through.
So, this is whats blocking our path Noah Bryne, is there a way to break through this wall?
[Initiating scan of the target. Measuring energy density Scan complete. With the ships remaining energy, destruction-based passage is not possible.]
What!? Wait, youre saying we cant break it? Then how are we supposed to move forward!?
If its like a net, cant we just slip through one of those gaps?
[Although it appears to be a grid, the spaces are not actual gaps. However, temporarily weakening the barrier by destroying specific points in the grid is theoretically possible. Unfortunately, we lack the energy to destroy even those weaker points.]
Ah, I see
Tia looked disappointed as she tilted her head. I scratched my chin, trying to think.
Still, finding those weak points sounds like a valid strategy. In that case, I could use my [Akashic Compass], to
[I have a proposal for you, Owner. Could you please proceed to the control room?]
Hm? Sure Tia, you coming?
Of course! Theres nothing for me to do out here alone.
Haha, fair point. Alright, lets go.
With Tia by my side, I headed back into the ship and made my way to the control room. At the center of the room stood a large, imposing helm, designed for manual operation if needed. Since I had no idea how to steer a ship, I let Noah Bryne handle everything.
Flanking the helm were upright metal columns, each topped with familiar white crystal orbs like those Id seen in the. Through the spotless glass windows ahead, the obstructive white grid was clearly visible.
Okay, were here. What now?
[Place your hand on the crystal to the right and activate the relevant ability.]
Relevant ability You mean my [Akashic Compass]? Alright, then huh!?
As soon as I activated my power, I felt a strange sensationlike something was being pulled out of my body. At the same time, a compass materialized in front of the helm, spinning rapidly.
[Installation of search ability confirmed. Beginning scan for weak points in the barrier.]
Wait, wait, wait! Hold on! Did you just steal my ability!?
[I did not steal it. It was borrowed with the users implicit consent.]
I didnt consent to anything! Bring it back! [Akashic Compass!]
I tried to summon the power again, but no metal framework appeared on my hand. That meant my Banishment Skill had been taken by the ship.
This is ridiculous! Youre giving it back, right? Youd better return it!
[To restore the abilitys authority, place your hand on the left crystal and execute the uninstall function.]
Left? This one?
Following the instruction, I placed my hand on the left crystal and willed the ability to return. The compass in front of the helm vanished, and the missing sensation in my body was restored.
[Akashic Compass!] Oh! Its back!
I activated the power as usual, and sure enough, the skill manifested like before.
Good Dont scare me like that! Are there any risks or limits to transferring powers like this? What happens if we do it repeatedly?
[There is no limit to the number of installations or uninstallations. Repeated transfers do not degrade the ability. However, abilities cannot be shared simultaneously between the Owner and the vessel. If the ship is destroyed while holding an ability, that ability may be permanently lost.]
Thats concerning. Anything else?
[This ship has 1,024 available slots. Each ability requires a different number of slots to install, but for the current Owner, a minimum of thirty abilities can be installed at once]
Hoo Thats certainly a tempting system.
In short, my Banishment Skills could be used as functional features on Noah Bryne. While incredibly useful, the issue was that I wouldnt be able to use those skills myself while they were installed on the ship.
Alright, Ill definitely loan out the [Akashic Compass] and [Automapping.] For accelerating the ship, we could use [Hermes Dash]. As for safety I might consider loaning [Invincible] and [Magiasorb] But
If I prioritized the ships safety too much, Id become too weak to defend myself. And while we hadnt encountered any attacks so far, I wasnt naive enough to assume it would stay peaceful forever.
Oh, by the way, what happens if I try lending out something like [Limit Break] or [Blood Engine]?
[The ship would explode]
Oh. Okay. Yeah, that makes sense.
[The ship is not human. It cannot increase performance through willpower or guts. An immediate tenfold or hundredfold output boost would result in catastrophic failure. Please refrain from such actions]
Got it! I wont try anything stupid, alright?
[Thank you. And My Lady, I will rely on you as well.]
My Lady!? Got it! If Ed tries any nonsense, Ill pinch his butt to stop him!
[Much appreciated.]
Leave it to me!
Tia, flattered by the ships acknowledgment, cheerfully wagged her ears and patted her chest in confidence. Why she then glanced at me with a hint of mischief, I had no idea.
Hey, Im not doing anything, okay?
Its fine if you dont actually do it, but you could at least pretend, couldnt you?
Why!? Why do you suddenly want to pinch my butt so badly!?
I dont, but if someones relying on me, I just want to shine, you know?
Then please shine somewhere else, not by pinching my butt My Lady.
Aw, fine. Since Im a lady, Ill behave.
Haha
Smiling wryly at the absurd exchange, I continued mentally organizing which Banishment Skills I might lend to the ship.
