We walked along the passage leading from the room filled with Skeletons and other skeletal Undead to the next room.[Honestly, the musical was fun! It was a little short, but it was lively and comedic. It was so good that, looking back on it, I almost thought Skeletons might be kind of cute. But, but still You didnt have to start with something scary, did you!?]
Although Hina-chan gave the musical high praise, she seemed to have been genuinely terrified by the sudden appearance of a Skeleton right beside her in the darkness at the beginning. She was praising it while simultaneously voicing her complaints.
We had separated while walking from the Zombie room to the skeleton room, but now she was clinging tightly to my right arm. It felt as though she was bracing herself for the next scare, convinced that something frightening would inevitably ambush us again.
[When it comes to making a strong first impression, I think it was pretty effective But for someone as easily frightened as Hina-chan, it might have been a bit much.]
[Mmm! But you were scared too, Aoi-senpai!]
[I was just startled. It was a total surprise, so I was taken aback, not frightened Even if the reactions look similar, theres a big difference.]
At Aoi-chans words from my left, with me standing between her and Hina-chan, Hina-chan puffed out her cheeks adorably and protested. Aoi-chan, however, replied with an expression that seemed rather composed.
Hmmm, I didnt think Aoi-chan was lying when she said shed merely been startled. However, from an angle Hina-chan couldnt see she was pinching my wrist between her fingers. So she had probably been at least somewhat frightened.
Still, Aoi-chan was the type to put on a brave face in situations like this. She didnt like showing her weaknesses, so she was maintaining an air of composure.
I smiled wryly at my adorable kouhais, whose reactions reflected their respective personalities so clearly, and glanced back at the others. Lilia-san, Luna-san, and Sieg-san didnt seem particularly frightened or on guard. If anything, they appeared to be happily discussing how they had gotten to see unusual Undead species that they normally wouldnt encounter.
[There werent any Skull Dragons though.]
[If I recall correctly, arent those classified as Dragons?]
[Skull Dragons arent creatures formed from corpses or the magic power of the dead or anything like that. Theyre Dragons with bodies resembling bones, a type of magical creature similar to Golems Well, Im sure Milady simply wants to see an unusual dragon.]
Behind those three, Anima and Caraway were having an apparently fascinating conversation of their own.
[Looking at it this way, there are quite a few Undeads that Ive heard about but have never actually seen.]
[Undead are basically nocturnal after all. With our usual daily routines, its pretty rare for us to encounter them in the first place.]
Eta and Theta were at the very back but Oya? Eta looked as she usually did, but Theta seemed to be bracing herself, or perhaps keeping her guard up for some reason.
Could she be uncomfortable around Undead? I hadnt noticed anything like that in either the zombie or skeleton room, though
With that thought in mind, we arrived at the next room It was, in a way, like the grand hall of an old, dilapidated Western-style mansion. There was an unsettling atmosphere about the place, and it wouldnt have been out of place as the setting for a horror movie. However there were no particularly noticeable Undead in sight.
[I- I- I knew it! This is definitely the kind of place where something suddenly pops out to scare us again Hyiiih!? W- What is that!?]
In the middle of Hina-chans sentence, the entrance shut, and immediately afterward, the lights inside the room began to flicker. Just like a light on the verge of burning out, they repeatedly dimmed and brightened.
This continued for several cycles, and then, the instant the room brightened again, something appeared right in front of our faces It was a ghostly figure, translucent and bluish-white, with no face.
[ ~ ~ ~ ~ ! ! ? ! ? ! ? ]
Immediately afterward, two impacts struck me at once The first was Hina-chan leaping at me with a scream that never quite made it into words. The second was the sensation of someone clinging to my arm from the opposite side It was Aoi-chan. As I suspected, even with how she was acting, she had been frightened after all.
Well, I could understand how they felt. If something that looked so unmistakably like a spectre suddenly appeared right in front of you, of course youd be startled. On top of that, unlike the Zombies and Skeletons, which hadnt entered our path, this ghost had suddenly appeared right under our noses.
It had completely caught us off guard, undermining our assumption that we only needed to watch out for things outside the designated route. In a sense, it had struck from beyond the limits of our vigilance.
W- Well, for now, lets see the descriptions
Wraith An Undead categorized under the Astral type. An entity that manifests when magic power accompanied by negative emotions gathers together. Although classified as a monster, it can more accurately be described as a type of magical phenomenon. It has no physical body, and the gathered magic power is insufficient for it to form a magic body. As such, a Wraith cannot physically or magically interfere with anything. Conversely, physical attacks have no effect on it, while magical attacks merely disperse its magic power temporarily, after which it quickly gathers again, making such attacks largely ineffective. After a certain amount of time, the accumulated magic power disperses and the Wraith disappears. It possesses little in the way of will, but has a tendency to approach the living. There is a belief that Wraiths approach the living to possess them, but this is incorrect, as Wraiths have no ability to possess others. However, since a Wraith itself is a mass of negative magic power, being approached by one can cause a person to feel depressed. It is believed that this is what led to the misconception. Wraiths generally disperse and disappear with the passage of time, but on rare occasions, they evolve into higher species.
I see. So its an entity that cant really interfere with us, but that we cant normally interact with either Isnt that basically an apparition?
Come to think of it, Lilia-san once told me that she disliked Wraiths because they couldnt be defeated with simple physical or magical attacks Apparently, that was no longer a problem now that she could cut through the very concept of magic power accompanied by emotions but
Anyway, this room seemed to be related to Wraiths Unn? What was that just now? I heard something that sounded like someone falling over
[Oi, Theta! Get a hold of yourself! This is exactly why I told you to wait at the reception desk!]
When I turned around, I saw Theta lying unconscious on the floor, with Eta helping her up. Arehh? Could it be that Theta really was afraid of horror stuff?
Serious-senpai : [Arehh? She didnt show any signs of it up until now, but is Theta afraid of scary things?]
? ? ? : [Well, to be precise, shes afraid of Wraiths. Apparently, she was chased around by one when she was little, and it seems to have left her traumatized.]
