Above THE Golden Expanse, in the layer of existence that no eye below the law could see, something was hanging in the endless skies of THE Ymnaros as the gaze of THE True Human Emperor rose to meet it!
And it was vaster than an Observable Existence.
Noah looked at it through his clone as the looking itself took time, because the thing did not end! It was a single living thing, deep stellar purple in color, and its body stretched past the horizon in every direction as it kept going past the horizon after that, so vast that an entire Observable Existence could have been lost inside it!
And its shape was a simple one to grasp, because it closely mimicked something like a massive bacteria or virus.
Its head was a huge many-sided shell of flat purple plates fitted together, hanging directly above THE Golden Expanse.
From under that head, long thin jointed legs reached down for thousands of miles, and each leg ended in millions of hair-fine threads that spread out across the sky of the domain below! Its long body was see-through in places, and inside that clear purple skin, small violet lights drifted and churned in slow waves, glowing brighter and dimmer as the whole terrifying presense of it pulsed and fed.
Because its jaws were open!
Under the many-sided head, the plates had pulled apart into a huge open mouth as it was drinking, and Noah could see the intake now with his new sight.
Thin ribbons of color were rising up off the entire Golden Expanse below, off the citadel of millions, off the pledged thousands, off every survivor of the war! Their worry. Their pain. Their misery. And even their happiness, the new fragile hope of a domain that had just stopped burying its dead, all of it being pulled up in slow threads into the open mouth of a thing none of them would ever know was there...!
HUUM!
Identity: a WOE CULTURE. A vast lifeform of the unseen layer. Woe Cultures are relatively harmless lifeforms in themselves: they do not hunt, they do not conquer, and they do not devour bodies. They latch above gatherings of lifeforms and siphon the happiness, anxieties, pain, and miseries of all those around. However: tendrils of its power permeate out across nearby existence, altering probability, and calling in more conflict and adversity to the region it has latched onto. Where a Woe Culture feeds, wars arrive more often, tragedies align more easily, and grief is harvested at its ripening. This nature sits at their core. It is simply who they are. They are not particularly powerful. They will preserve themselves if attacked...
STATUS PANEL: WOE CULTURE
VERITAS: 12
PROVENANCE: 0
POTENTIA: 11
PONDUS: 11
...!
Twelve!
A VERITAS above his own!
It hung fat and glowing over his domain with a Trueness that surpassed him, and of course it was twelve, of course, because the thing was perfectly true to itself! It had no doubts about its nature and no arguments inside its endless body as it fed on sorrow and farmed sorrow to feed on, never once questioning either.
And the tendrils!
The probability-tendrils spread across the sky of THE Golden Expanse were quietly bending the odds of an entire region toward conflict as horrendous questions bloomed one after another. How long had it hung here? How many of the age-cycles of war that had emptied the family graves of Superpowered Lifeforms, one generation after another, had simply been harvest seasons arranged by the thing above the clouds?
"..."
The clone of THE True Human Emperor looked at it with a furious gaze as when it came to what exactly he should do here, his existence already knew it clearly.
A thing was farming his people.
In the next second, eight more Provenance Sanguine Clones tore into the unseen layer out of folds of crimson gold as they appeared behind the first, titanic and shamanic and glorious as crowns of blood turned above nine heads!
Nine bloody staffs rose as one, and at the tip of each, a drop of blood formed, crimson gold around stellar blue!
Sanguine Blood Drop!
Nine drops popped!
BOOM!
A battle bloomed...that those around could not even see.
The unseen sky of THE Ymnaros turned crimson gold from horizon to horizon as event horizons bloomed in their uncounted numbers across the stellar purple bulk, twisting force of infinite density detonating along light years of skin and plate! And below, in the seen world, not one soul of THE Golden Expanse felt so much as a breeze as the war above them did not exist in their Dimensionality at all.
The Woe Culture convulsed!
Its many-sided head snapped around as its plates ground against each other, and across its vast surface the violet motes froze mid-churn as Noah felt its attention arrive on his clones carrying something he had not expected from a thing that size.
Shock!
It blinked in its fashion, every mote going dark at once and relighting, because it had been perceived.
Something below had seen it, and things below did not see it, had never seen it, in all the long ages of its grazing!
Then it preserved itself.
Its retaliation came in its own grammar, and its grammar was corruption.
The long thin legs snapped up off the domain’s sky and drove down at the clones as hollow lances longer than mountain ranges struck at crimson gold flesh, and they did not cut, they injected, violet code flooding toward his blood as it tried to rewrite what it touched into more of itself!
Patches of its see-through skin swelled and burst in silent blooms as clouds of glimmering spore-motes latched onto whatever they met and began to replicate, doubling, quadrupling, purple frost spreading across the arms of two clones!
Sheets of dissolving fluid sluiced from its jaws as they unmade the very weave where they fell, and beneath all of it, the probability-tendrils turned on him.
But his blood did not take instruction!
The violet code flooded into Sanguine Mana and found nothing it was permitted to rewrite! The spore-frost spread across crimson gold and instsntly stopped, starved, because his blood answered no authority but his own!
The clones circled the endless body in wide burning arcs as their staffs swept and the barrage did not pause, Sanguine Blood Drops falling in continuous rhythm as they tore gorges of crimson through stellar purple, whole plates of its many-sided head shearing away and dissolving as thousands of miles of its body collapsed in slow silence!
And midway through its tearing, the thing spoke.
Its voice boomed through the unseen layer, heavy and vast and genuinely puzzled.
"Why attack me, Little One? We are all simply moving in accordance with our nature across existence."
Noah answered through nine mouths at once, and his voice came out tyrannically calm.
"I reject your nature. Do you understand what you hang above? Lifeforms who bury their children and cannot say why the wars keep coming. Countless many have died across the ages, bled out in conflicts your tendrils arranged, grieving on schedule so that your jaws would not go empty. Their miseries were your farmland. I reject it. Wholly."
The motes of the Woe Culture churned slowly, and when it answered, there was no cruelty anywhere in it, and there was no comprehension either.
"So... what? Lifeforms live, and lifeforms die. It is nature. It is...existence"
...!
Oh!
"Then let me enforce nature," Noah said as nine staffs rose together, "and give you your death!"
BOOM!
The barrage redoubled as gorges became canyons across the endless purple!
And the Woe Culture became infuriated!
Every mote down its lighy years flared violet-white at once as its grammar changed! Its long thin legs spread wide as fields of hair-fine threads opened across the whole unseen sky, and it reached, not for the clones, but for the rivers!
The endless white authority of THE Argent Loom answered it! Currents that had flowed serenely through the battle bent out of their courses and poured toward the vast body as white rivers wrapped around its long legs and gathered into its open jaws, threading through the wounds in its body as loomlight knitted across the crimson canyons!
And along its many-sided head, the gathered white began to weave, strand crossing strand at terrifying speed as lances and lattices and turning wheels of pure stellar white assembled above THE Golden Expanse, authority older than the frameworks bending into weapons!
