<THE Sealed One>
Talk.
The word hung in the golden mist as the vessel of THE Sealed One stood on four broken foundations, blood running freely down his wrists and pooling in his shoes, and instead of answering her, he lifted his merely human eyes and gazed up at the prisons.
They went on and on. Wall after mountain after wall of stacked gray cells, and in every cell, a face! An Infinite Lifeform staring at nothing as its silent seas stayed dark. A Gilded one with its brilliance snuffed, hugging its own knees. Source Lifeforms pressed against metal, ancient True Lifeforms sitting perfectly still in the way of beings who had run out of things to try, and down every corridor, in every direction, for gigaparsecs, those same three tenants living in every pair of eyes.
Despair. Horror. Fear!
"I will talk," the vessel said, and even bleeding, his voice found its old evenness. "Let us talk about you. Are you among the hypocrites, Warden? The ones who think they are doing something good?"
Yrsa said nothing, and he took the silence as a stage.
"There are a number of beings like me who move above the many. We sit behind thrones and beneath foundations, and we use authority and power to do our own bidding across Ages. I am guilty of everything you suspect and a great deal you lack the imagination for. If you shackled me, and told me you were banning the usage of authority for things like me who abuse it... that, I would understand. I would even call it overdue."
His broken hand rose an inch, gesturing at the horizon of cells. "But look at all of these innocent ones. Look at them! What did the millions, the billions of Infinite Lifeforms and Gilded ones and Source Lifeforms DO with their authority to deserve being chained like this? They grew as their natures grew them. They climbed the only ladders existence offered. And your answer to my crimes... is their cages."
And Warden Yrsa laughed at this time!
It was a real laugh, short and genuinely amused as she knew THE Sealed One didn’t give a damn about innocents and just wanted to waste time!
"Who are you," she said, "to even discuss morality? To sort which ones are innocent and which ones are not? The single greatest argument for my work is standing in front of me." She walked a slow half-circle around him.
"But fine. Let us grant your point fully. Let us say the vast majority of them are innocent. Truly innocent. Do you know what they are then?"
She stopped, and looked up at the cells.
"They are you, earlier. You rose from beings just like them. You were once a tiny little lifeform, climbing the only ladders existence offered, growing as your nature grew you. And yet look at what you grew up to be. Every horror above starts as an innocent below, and existence has run that experiment for eons and drowned in the results every single time. So no, I do not chain them for what they did. I chain them for what the ladder makes."
Her voice settled into something vast and level. "At this moment in time, we have begun the process. Binding, chaining, and removing authority across many Observable Existences and Dimensions, across THE Source Lands, across THE Infinite Carcosa. And when the bindings are done, every single one of them will be transferred to live peacefully across different regions of existence, in places where the abuse of authority cannot harm any other life."
"They can build their civilizations with their own hands. They can farm, and craft, and argue, and grow old. And if any of them ever wishes harm, they can, at most, harm themselves or a specific few. Never again will a single existence hold such an abuse of authority that it can affect the lives of countless others."
The vessel of THE Sealed One looked at her through the pain, bleeding from four broken limbs, and smiled.
"And look at you," he said softly. "A single existence, deciding the fate of countless all around you, right now."
For one moment, the white rivers around her slowed.
Then Yrsa waved her hand, unbothered.
"I do not care for philosophy. I care for informstion. So we return to my questions, and you will notice that I have been patient." She crouched before him again.
"THE Dimensionlapses. The fusings accelerate this Age, and Dimensions do not fold into each other on their own schedule. Who benefits from skies drowning in skies? What is being consolidated? Speak."
"Mm. And here is my question." Blood was running from the corner of his mouth now, but the old pleasantness never left his voice. "What does a thing like you belong to? You wear no authority. You hate authority and yet use it. You collar Primevals and quote a coming age. So whose dog are you, Warden? A dog of Those Who Remain, sent to clean the board for its owners? Or something rarer... a dog of those who look down upon authority itself?"
His breath rattled, and his smile widened through it. "Or are you a dog of THE First Lifeforms?"
"The conflicts between True Lifeforms and the Primeval Ones." Yrsa continued as if he had not spoken at all. "Three Ages of cold war warming. Someone has been feeding both sides of that fire. Was it you? Name your partners."
"You did not answer my question."
"Name the other hands behind THE Dimensionlapses."
"You did not answer my question." A wet laugh. "Which means the answer of who you belong to is...interesting. Merely a dog. Oh, a bitch, merely a bitch...that is all you are."
CRACK!
She broke a rib almost absently, and he folded around it, and still nothing came out of him but blood! Question after question, minutes of them, the fusings, the wars, his vessels, his allies, and the vessel of THE Sealed One deflected and asked and smiled and bled, growing paler by the exchange, his voice thinning as the pool beneath him spread, an ancient monster spending the last of a borrowed body on the only currency he had left.
Silence.
At last, Yrsa rose, and shook her head.
"I did not want to do it this way. Extraction through a fried brain wastes almost everything." She looked down at him.
"So. Memory extraction is the way to go. Any last words, as this vessel of yours is about to lose its life?"
The dying vessel lifted his head.
And he smiled with red teeth.
"Death... smiles at everyone," said THE Sealed One. "I smile back at it."
BOOM!
Yrsa waved her hands.
Brilliant white authority flowed down out of the rivers and into the head of the vessel as his entire body began to seize, limbs hammering the platform, blood misting from his nose and ears, and through the seizure, through the frying of everything he was, his voice came out one last time, wet and shaking and utterly unafraid!
"Wait for me. Just wait for me... and I will show you how vast this existence is. I have been living across dimensions and time. My vessels are many. My connections are abundant. Just you... wait for me."
BOOM!
His body bled out of every orifice at once, and in the next moment, his head burst!
—
<Warden Yrsa>
Yrsa frowned unpleasantly at the mess.
She waved her hand, and the ruined vessel of THE Sealed One turned to a drift of pale ash that the golden mist carried off the platform. What remained was the collar, and she caught it out of the air and held it, looking at the woven white lines in silence, reading what the extraction had pulled through them.
Then she shook her head with slow frustration.
"Barely any salvageable memories come out of this... haa!"
While she was expressing it, the rivers of THE Argent Loom around the platform slowed.
A handsome young man appeared out of the white, tall and clean-featured, and around his body circled halos of white light, ring after slow ring, orbiting him from shoulders to heels. His gaze was heavy as it settled on her.
"THE Sealed One is one of the major threats we keep tabs on across dimensions and time," he said. "Are we certain this one was entirely inhibited? That it did not get the chance to send any information back to its main components?"
Yrsa smiled slightly at that.
"Even he does not know that another vessel of his, alongside multiple vile but great minds of existence, inadvertently lent their help in making the design of these Existential Inhibitors possible. No, Axon. Nothing got through." She turned the collar once in her hand, and set it down on the empty stone seat.
"I will finish things up in this region of THE Infinite Carcosa. Can you actually go to THE Ymnaros Dimension, where Ohmran is already heading? Since THE Sealed One was there, and he faced a problem he wanted another to take care of... let us make sure it is not anything too major. And do not make a move unless you are absolutely certain of who is involved. We have begun locking up True Lifeforms, and even Primeval Lifeforms... but we have yet to start our hands on Descendants. We wait for further instructions before we make any moves on our own..."
"Understood."
...!
The halos brightened, and Axon was gone into the white.
Yrsa stood alone at the top of the temple, and sighed, and looked out across the region. The tiers below her. The priests of a collared master. The mountains of cells running past every horizon, gigaparsecs of caged authority sitting in gray silence, millions of the mighty of existence waiting in small rooms for a peaceful age they had not asked for.
And she whispered to none of them.
"Existence breathes, and epochs pass, leaving Civilizations that become monuments, then crumble to memory, and are long forgotten when that breath comes again. In all these eons... just what reigns supreme?"
