<THE Continuum Paradox>They were crossing through THE Dimensional Provenance Train.
They were, but...
The pull took them mid-sentence, and existence answered before their feet had even found ground.
THREE PARTICIPANTS HAVE BEEN PULLED ACROSS THE DIMENSIONAL PROVENANCE TRAIN.
You are arriving within a Narrative of Existence in progress.
Records note: this Narrative has failed to entertain. The combatants within it met no hardship worth recording. Victory arrived without cost, without struggle, and without a single moment of doubt.
The reigning champions of this Cabin hold a Narrative of devouring and usurpation. It has consumed everything placed before it, and it has done so far too easily.
Should the arriving participants attain victory and BREAK this Narrative of Existence, additional rewards shall be given.
...!
Three frowns landed at once!
Descartes, THE Continuum Paradox, took the information as it came and did not move a muscle of his face beyond the frown itself. Beside him THE Primordial Paradox rolled his shoulders and made a sound of open disgust at being moved without being asked. And Erwin, THE Living Paradox, simply tilted his head.
Then they looked around!
They stood in a Dimension made of gaseous stellar matter and debris. Vast clouds of it hung in every direction, greens and rusts and deep violets rolling slow through each other, and through the clouds drifted rock, mountains of it, continents of it, tumbling without hurry through a space that had no floor and no sky and no end that any of them could find.
Auras saturated all of it. Thousands of them. Descendants and Primeval Ones, the weight of their existences pressing against the stellar clouds from every direction at once, enough gathered power to level Dimensions stacked one atop another out to the horizon.
And it was silent.
Not quiet. SILENT! Not one voice, not one breath, not one scrape of movement across all that floating stone. Thousands of the mighty occupied this place and produced no sound whatsoever.
Above everything, an eye watched.
It hung in the upper dark past the clouds, enormous and patient, and it was not looking at the Dimension. It was looking at THEM, with the settled anticipation of something that had cleared its schedule.
Erwin looked up at it and smiled pleasantly.
The eye did not react!
Compared to what came next, none of that was the strange part.
Because as the three of them turned to survey the floating stone, they found the mighty of this place seated and standing across all of it. Descendants on the tumbling rock, robed and horned and marked. Primeval Ones sprawled across whole asteroids, ancient and enormous and still. Some sat cross-legged. Some stood at edges looking out at nothing. Thousands of them, scattered through the debris in every direction.
And when the three arrived, all of them turned at the same time.
Every single one!
Thousands of heads swung toward the arrival point in the same instant with the same speed, thousands of faces angling to the same degree, and thousands of pairs of eyes settled on them glazed over with an obsidian purple sheen!
THE Primordial Paradox blinked.
Erwin blinked beside him.
"Well," Erwin said mildly. "That is...familiar."
They looked further in, toward the center of the Dimension, where the debris thickened around a single massive floating asteroid that everything else seemed to orbit.
Two figures sat upon it.
The first was a man in white robes, and by every ordinary measure he was fairly average. Average build. Average height. A plain face that would not have earned a second glance in a crowded market. Nothing about him screamed anything at all.
Except for the circle on his chest!
It was divided into nine sections, a nine-pointed star outlined across his breast, and set into the edges of it were gems. Nine of them, radiant, each one a different color and every color impossible, and each single gem radiated the profound aura of a pristine First Cause.
Nine First Causes! On one man’s chest! Blazing around the edges of an Enneagram like ornaments he had picked out that morning!
And his eyes were clear.
That was the thing THE Continuum Paradox marked immediately, since it was the only thing in the entire Dimension that did not fit. Not one thread of that obsidian purple unity ran through this one’s gaze. He was himself, entirely, and he was looking directly at Erwin with a coldness that had nothing polite in it whatsoever.
He was looking at THE Living Paradox the way a man looks at someone he has already decided to fight.
But the thing that seized the attention of the two Paradoxes was not the man with nine First Causes on his chest!
It was the being sitting beside him.
A stellar titan, humanoid, so vast that the asteroid served him as a stool. His entire body shone with an obsidian allure, a dark that gave back light instead of drinking it, and across every inch of that enormous frame ran boundless weavings of chaos, churning and folding and unmaking themselves without pause. He sat with one arm across a raised knee, and he wore an expression of profound and ancient boredom.
And both Paradoxes knew that face!
"Abbadon?"
THE Primordial Paradox said it out loud, and incredulity carried the word across the whole silent Dimension!
"Why do your eyes seem their depressed and ancient selves? Your entire mind was taken over, as far as I knew! Which also seems to be the case for every single one of these..."
He gestured, and the gesture took in thousands of purple-glazed faces still turned toward them in perfect unison.
In the distance, Abbadon harrumphed.
THE Primordial Chaos shifted his enormous frame, and the chaos-weavings across his body churned faster with the motion, and when he spoke his voice rolled through the stellar clouds without disturbing a single one of them.
"I worked out a deal to move with my own autonomy."
He looked the three of them over without much enthusiasm.
"I thought another set of meals was coming for me and the master. I did not expect to see you two. Are we still considered acquaintances? Or are we enemies?"
BOOM!
The question landed and detonated, because of everything Abbadon had just said, one word did the real damage!
The Master!
One mind. One singular mind of unity, integrated across thousands of Descendants and Primeval Ones at once, wearing them the way a lesser being wears clothing, moving their heads in the same instant and glazing their eyes with the same obsidian purple. Thousands of the mighty gathered here, and not one of them was anybody anymore.
THE Great Usurper had grown grandly!
Not to be mistaken for the one who held the mantle of THE USURPER, who was and was not a vessel of THE Sealed One, currently occupying an entirely different region of THE Dimensional Provenance Train.
Two devourers on one train!
And above them all, the enormous eye narrowed!
THE OVERSEEING ONE observes with growing displeasure.
You KNOW each other?
Records confirm prior acquaintance between the arrivals and the native inhabitants. This was not accounted for. A Narrative constructed around confrontation loses its tension when the confronting parties open with pleasantries and inquiries after each other’s health.
This Narrative is not going according to plan.
Something else will have to be done about this.
The eye pulsed once, and the whole Dimension pulsed with it, the stellar clouds flattening and rebounding across light years!
A sufficient Narrative of Existence guaranteeing amusement has been selected.
THE NARRATIVE OF EXISTENCE: THE TRAGIC HEROES is being instituted.
