Chapter 5710: Sonder II

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

THE Dream State of Sonder elevates the Mantle of THE Meta-Fictional Protagonist. It grants a gaze of empathy and understanding: you perceive the dreams and the hopes of those you look upon. You are the Human Dreamer. You are not the only one who dreams in existence. You may now perceive and draw not only from your own dreams, but from the dreams of all who dream around you.

PROVENANCE has crossed the 100 threshold, passing into THE SEAM, into THE INEFFABLE VERSE, and arrived at 110.

VERITAS has advanced to 105.

PONDUS has advanced to 101.

OSMONTIAN MOIRAI has advanced to 125.

Noah stood in the greying instant with his existence remade a little, and his eyes shone with endless blue and gold, and the shine remained a solemn thing.

He had dreams. Others had dreams too. As THE Human Dreamer he could dream grandly enough for himself and everyone he loved, and he could do it without grinding the dreams of the uninvolved to dust beneath him. That was possible.

And if he met a being who meant to spend its dream on the destruction of his, then of course he would answer it without mercy, because protecting what was his had never once required apology.

His hand closed into a fist.

He looked up, and the brilliance in his eyes grew brighter.

Then he looked at the lineage around him, the Provenance Lifeforms who had lost everything, drifting through the ruin of a city that had stood since before the current arrangement of things, and he wanted to offer them somewhere.

Somewhere an Immense One could not reach. He had a Realm, and a first Elsedimension folded into it, built with no authority an architect could ride, and he wanted to open it and say come, be safe, no strand of the Weave will ever touch you here.

He was not sure he could say it truthfully.

Because an Immense One had just reached into the Vasiliou Elsedimension and expressed his full power inside a place that was supposed to blunt him, and Noah did not know how. If a strand of THE Immense One could bypass one Elsedimension, could it bypass his? Could it walk into the Realm and do to his mother and his son and his people what the Collector had just done here?

He did not know!

And ever since he had built his first Elsedimension, he had given THE Infiniverse the order to begin turning the whole of herself into one, an Elsedimension entire, a home no other existence could enter. He had believed that made his people safe. He had believed it as firmly as he had believed Aurelius could hold an Immense One at bay.

Assumptions had killed today. He would ask Atlas, because he could not afford one more thing he merely hoped was true.

He drew a breath in the stretched grey instant, and he let THE Provenance of THE Human Dreamer open the whole of the way, and Sonder woke behind his eyes.

The grey filled with gold.

Around every single being in the ruined city, a swirling cloud of golden dream turned slowly, one for each of them, and no two were alike, and the whole devastated Elseworld became a sky of quiet private dreaming.

He looked at Thalia.

THALIA VASILIOU dreams: to be believed, once, by the one she crossed time to reach. To not be a warning he resents. To sit at a table that is set for the living. To protect and to prosper.

Noah’s chest tightened, and he made himself keep looking.

He looked at Aurelius, and at Rosalia holding him.

AURELIUS and ROSALIA VASILIOU dream: that the name survives them. That the daughter they bargained away was worth the wound it cost to let her go.

Note: any weaving you contribute to the dreams of those you perceive feeds back into THE Human Dream. The grander the dream you help carry, the grander the return to your own.

Noah looked at them all, one at a time, through the gold, and he inscribed the afternoon into his existence.

He had made no promises. He would hold to that, since it was true.

But he could move differently. He could carry his Dreams and his Infinity across existence without leaving only apocalypse behind him, without decimating every story he happened to walk through on his way to being grand.

The grey released.

Color and sound crashed back into the ruined Elseworld, and Aurelius, mid-sentence, found the end of it at last.

"But I...am glad," the old man said quietly, "that my daughter is alive."

Noah finally spoke.

"I should have made precautions much earlier." He looked at the old man across the ruin. "I am sorry."

Aurelius only smiled at that, sadly, and looked around at the pale places in the air and the fallen tower and the survivors moving through the rubble counting the ones who were not moving through it with them. He did not argue the apology and he did not accept it.

Noah looked at Thalia.

She was tending her father, her Provenance flowing into him in a steady warm current, and her face had changed. The hollowness was gone out of it. What had replaced it was firm!

Before he could call out to her, she spoke.

"An Immense One wanted my Provenance." She did not look up from her father as she said it. "One of them looked across all of existence and decided that what runs in a Vasiliou was worth crossing a sky to take."

Her hand pressed flat against Aurelius’s chest, and her Provenance sank deeper into him.

"So I will use it. I will use it to change the Provenance of my lineage." Her eyes came up now, and they burned. "I will make them all into Elselifeforms, and I will understand, down to the root, exactly why a being like that wanted this badly enough to burn my home for it. If we are worth taking, then we are worth becoming something that cannot be taken."

Noah gave a light nod at that.

"I cannot make any promises right now," he said.

"But I am looking into a bastion. A domain that something like THE UNPAID COLLECTOR should not be able to reach into. As soon as I have confirmation, real confirmation, I will tell you. It should be possible to move the whole of the Vasiliou Elsedimension somewhere safer."

Thalia looked at him, and her eyes shone with a sudden immense brilliance, because she knew exactly what place he meant. She had walked its blue-gold hills. She had asked him, once, to take her to see his mother in it!

She simply nodded, and turned back to her father, and let her Provenance flow.

Noah’s existence pulsed.

And far away, in a place outside the weavings of time, another of his bodies stopped walking.
