Noah looked at her with shining eyes, and it was a surreal thing, and all the while his newly-forged existence drank knowledge from the record around him, more and more of it, pouring in. He nodded, slow and thoughtful.
He had felt an overwhelming sense of control and power that almost gave this feeling of invincibility!
He definitely needed to still be cautious as he continued to absorb waves and waves of knowledge.
"You are a record of something that happened in the past," he said. "Even though we now talk, you are..."
"I am not here. Yes." She interrupted him gently, still walking now, moving away from the river.
"This is my record. My existence itself left long ago. And in words that will mean something to you now, I am not one of Those Who Remain. Because I did not remain."
She glanced back at him, and there was something old and unreadable in it. "But you came here for information. So ask away."
And then she stopped pouring the Dimensions.
The endless stream ceased, and the fish scattered sated into the bright water, and Lucy turned and began to walk across the river and into the forest, her bare feet passing over the surface as though it were ground, and Noah drifted beside her, floating over the water, radiant and new beside the small ancient thing.
"An endless cold has begun to spread across existence," Noah said, keeping pace with her through the trees of budding worlds.
"It hunts the mighty. And from the corpse of a slain Immense One, your likeness, your image, rose up out of the death and planted a forest of frozen Domains across existence...just like what we see here. Why? What can you tell me about THE LONG NIGHT?"
...!
Noah asked the question without expecting much of an answer.
But he knew he had come to the right place. The moment this entity had confirmed she had once stood upon the same stage he had only just climbed onto, he understood that whatever she gave him would be worth the hearing, even if it came wrapped in riddles.
Lucy was thoughtful for a moment. Then she spoke, and she did not stop walking as she did.
"Existence is not static," she said, moving through the forest of budding domains with her bare feet passing light over root and water alike. "For weaker lifeforms, for those like you were before you took this recent step, existence looks as though it has always been the way they found it. They simply have not lived long enough to know better."
She lifted a hand as she walked, and where she gestured a dead grey tree at the forest’s edge shuddered and bloomed, budding a fresh Dimension upon a new-grown bough. She did not so much as glance at it. It was nothing to her, a habit, the way a person might trail a hand along a wall in passing.
"The Long Night was something many knew was coming, if they were old enough. Because they know existence is not static. Because they know that existence moves in cycles."
She glanced back at him, and there was that old unreadable thing in her eyes. "You may notice my words are cryptic. That is because even I do not fully know what The Long Night will bring. Consider it a change in existence, arriving after certain conditions have been met. No more than that, because I know no more than that."
They walked on, and around her the forest answered her presence without her willing it, Dimensions ripening and falling and rising again in her wake.
"As for why a manifestation of my existence would bloom out of a dead thing," she went on, "my immensity left a mark. Existence remembers what was exceptional in it, and my weavings were exceptional enough to be rememberd. So a memory of them was chosen, called up out of the deep of things. I would likely be only one among many memories that might see a resurgence, before this is done."
She waved her hand again, idly, and a river some distance off changed its course to flow the other way! "But...I am not here. Not your version of here. You are young, and you have only just forged your Root. Take the time to explore, and to understand."
Noah listened, and drank in every word, and the record around him poured knowledge into his newborn existence as she spoke.
"You will come to find," Lucy said, "that trying to grasp the secrets of existence by asking a senior will never be quite so pleasurable as finding them out yourself. Existence is grand. It is more beautiful than you can yet imagine."
She stopped, and turned, and looked at him fully. "You have not even left your Existential Root Domain, have you? Seeing how impatient you are for answers, you must have come here the very instant it formed."
He said nothing.
Her fiendish smile returned, gentler this time. "Do not get lost in old records and old pasts, little guy. Even though we experience time differently, we of the Root, the present is always the grandest thing there is. Even we cannot change the past by very much. A friend of mine used to tell me to focus on the present. It is a gift. That is why it is called the present."
She turned back toward the forest and walked on. "Go and experience existence for the first time, now that your Root has emerged. You will find that it is beautiful."
...!
Noah’s eyes shone at that, and he nodded slowly.
"I will not keep you much longer," he said. "So I will ask only one last thing. For someone like me, who is just emerging, just being born into what I now am, what is the single most important thing I should know right now, for my survival?"
...!
What was the most important thing he should know?
The question lit Lucy’s eyes, and she smiled, and this time it was almost fond.
"In existence, there are two kinds of Root," she said. "Conceptual Existential Roots, and Physical Existential Roots. The first gives rise to Empyros Immense Lifeforms. The second to Fiend Immense Lifeforms. Most Roots are conceptual, as yours is, as most of what you will meet will be."
She paused, and the fondness in her face sharpened into something like a warning. "So for your survival...do not offend those who bear a Physical Existential Root. And in the future to come, do not offend a Fiend Immense Lifeform. Take it step by step, and attain your Immensity in your own time. And know that there is sometimes no harm at all in being low key."
She began to turn away.
"Good luck, Osmont. I hope you do not become one of Those Who Remain." Her voice dropped. "That would be such a shame. Such a shame."
HUUM!
She took a single step, and everything began to shake!
The forest trembled. The river shivered. The budding domains swayed upon their boughs, and Noah understood, without being told, that she simply did not wish to share anything more. The conversation was over because she had decided it was over!
He nodded, and he did not press her.
"Thank you," he said.
...!
And then Noah looked at the figure of Lucy one last time, the small rough ancient thing pouring Domains from her hands at the beginning of all existence, and he held her image in his newborn existence as though ingranining it there, a thing he did not want to forget.
Then he took a step of his own, and he left the grand record behind.
He had gathered more threads of knowledge than he had come for, and now, he wanted only one thing.
He wanted to see, for the first time, just how different existence looked through the eyes of what he had become!
