Chapter 5812: Epiphany!

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Noah looked at himself with every single sight. He turned his whole perception inward and looked at what he had become, standing in the frozen dark of the Basal Floor among the corpses of nine Guards, his existence and his Root one thing now, buzzing with a power so total that the snow still hung motionless in the air around him.

And at the very top of it, where the door should have been, there was nothing!

He looked at that nothing for a long time.

If a being could not become Immense, then that was the end of the road. Wasn’t it? That was what everyone believed. Every Provenance Lifeform, every Progeny on evry golden cloud, every Immense One on every throne. Immensity was the formula. It was the shape existence had given to growth itself, the one direction every climbing thing had always climbed. And existence had just closed it.

So that was it, then. The ceiling. The end!

But...

Was it?!

He turned the thought over again, slowly, and looked at it from the other side.

Existence had shut the door. But existence did not do things for no reason. Even the Long Night, tainted as it was, even the cold that culled and the cold that closed, even the Counting pressing on every Root in existence, all of it came from somewhere and pointed somewhere. So what was a closed door pointing at?

Everyone assumed it meant no!

What if it did not?!

"What if it is not a negative thing?" Noah said quietly, to the frozen dark. "What if it is existence saying... do not follow?"

His existence buzzed!

It shook through him from his skin to his core, a single deep resonant note, as if every packed quark in his body had just heard something it agreed with. The snow around him trembled in the air. Somewhere far off, a torn Dimension drifted, and the light inside it flickered!

A reading of existence has been made.

The door to Immensity is closed to all who would pass through it.

A closed door does not only say no. It also says: not this way.

Existence has not forbidden growth. It has forbidden following.

...!

Not this way!

Noah breathed in, slow and deep, and let his Dream open.

He dreamed an infinite dream! It was not a dream of one thing. It was a dream of everything that could be, every possible path his existence could take from this exact moment, all of them at once, spread out before him in the span of a single instant.

He saw himself Immense, and saw that version of himself crushed against the closed door, severed like Minerva, weeping in the snow. He saw himself refusing to climb and freezing slowly in the Long Night with his family around him.

He saw himself as a tyrant eating whole Legacies. He saw himself as nothing. He saw himself as everything. Billions of futures and more, branching and branching, each one real for the space of the instant, each one his.

And somewhere in all of them, under all of them, a pattern!

He came out of the instant, and it had not even been an instant!

"I see it now," Noah said.

His voice had gone very calm. Very far away.

"All of it. Every path I could take, at once. They are all happening. They have all already happened. It is strange, how simple it looks from here."

He looked at his own hands. "Every one of those paths that climbs toward Immensity ends at the same shut door. Every single one. It does not matter how strong I become, or how clever. The door is the same. It was built to stop things exactly like me."

The snow drifted around him.

"But the other paths do not climb. They change."

He was quiet for a moment. "I watched the ones that change. Under pressure, they become something else. They always have. A creature is cornered by the cold, and its children grow fur. A creature is starved, and its children learn to eat stone. Humans were soft things once, in places that wanted them dead, and they did not become Immense. They became...human. Over and over, under every weight that was ever laid on them, they became something that had not existed before."

He lifted his head.

"Existence does not want another Immense One. It has enough of those. It has shut the old road, and every being on it will keep pushing on the door and wondering why it will not open." A pause. "I do not have to push. I only have to...evolve."

...!

Your Infinite Dream has gazed upon boundless possibility.

A path has been found where no path was written.

Path established: THE Osmontian Culmination.

Your existence may evolve.

Not into Immensity. Into something that has never existed.

Everything you have ever dreamed, every memory, every emotion, every life you lived in the death of time, every battle, every gift, every loss, every experience your existence has held across its entire span, will be gathered and culminated.

From all of it, a new lifeform will be made. It will be the product of everything you have lived, and it will belong to no path but your own.

Requirement: your present existence must first be filled to its Absolute. Quintessential Existential Chorionic Gonadotropins are the current best means.

Present saturation: 44 integrated. Estimated saturation of your present existence: 11%.

The road is arduous. The resources required are unfathomable.

Your Dream holds that it is possible.

...!

Eleven percent!

Forty-four Quintessential ECGs, and he was barely a tenth of the way there. Hundreds more. Perhaps far more than hundreds, if the Absolute of his existence kept growing as he grew. Every one of them earned by giving, every gift paid for by killing things like the nine Guards dead around him, and all of it under a winter that grew heavier with every Root that dared to exist.

It would be the hardest road he had ever walked!

And it was his!

Not written by Those Who Remain. Not handed down by a Legacy. Not the door every Immense One in existence had passed through and every Root in existence was now pounding on in vain. A road nobody had ever walked, because nobody had ever looked at a shut door and understood that it was pointing somewhere else.

Noah looked up into the falling snow. It had begun to move again around him, drifting down across the dead Guards and the torn Dimensions and the frozen islands of the Basal Floor, and Ling hung beside him in the dark, silent, watching his face.

He smiled!

"Fuck Immensity," Noah said. "Fuck the written path."

His existence buzzed, and the snow scattered around him!

"Fuck existence."

HUUM!
