The tentacles had barely settled over the Legacy when the Existential Conduits began to rise.Noah watched it happen through the sliver of himself on the Thinker’s mountain. All across the Legacy, the vast pillars of flowing authority that climbed out of the purple-gold rivers tore loose from their beds and lifted. They rose higher, and higher, until they stood like the columns of some impossible hall, and then they moved, spreading apart, drawing lines across the whole snowbound expanse, pillar beside pillar beside pillar, until the Legacy was carved into separate domains, each one walled off from the others by rings of rising light!
Golden spheres of foreign Immensity found themselves caught inside those rings, cut off, each one alone in its own partition.
Then the mist came down!
It poured out of the obsidian visage in the sky, black and gold and billowing, boundless as the blizzard and far heavier, rushing down over every carved domain at once. Mountains vanished into it, then the rivers and the Conduit walls and the frozen golden spheres pinned inside them. Everything it touched became obscure, unseeable, lost in a churning dark shot through with veins of gold.
If you didn’t know, you’re about to know.
Put some respect on her name.
Put some respect on THE Acharya!
BOOM!
The mists closed over the whole Legacy!
Noah’s perception went into them and came back with nothing but chaos. Immensity colliding with Immensity somewhere in the obscurity. Domains shaking. Roars that could have been anything, or anyone. The weight of beings who had stood at the top of existence for longer than most of existence had existed, all of them at war at once, hidden behind a curtain of gold and black.
His expression grew heavy!
Among all these titans, he truly fell short of every one. They held Immensity. Every one of them, the invaders and the defenders and the monstrous visage spreading its tentacles across the sky. They had walked through the door long ago, before existence shut it, and whatever they were fighting over now, they were fighting over it from a height above him.
That height was closed to him forever. Existence had made sure of that.
Yet he had something they lacked! A future away from Immensity, glorious and unwritten, that existence had denied him the old road to and so forced him to find his own.
So.
He drew his gaze back down out of the storm, and closed his eyes on the prayer mat, and turned his whole attention to the part of him standing in THE Existential Root Domain.
—
The dead Immense One lay across the blue-gold hills, robed and crowned, its hands crossed over its chest, its settled Immensity pressing the soil down around it into a shallow valley. Beside it, the Immense Ergosphere turned and turned, gold light sweeping around its dark core.
Ruination stood a little behind him, her crimson beams resting quietly on the corpse, reading it, keeping every detail. THE Infiniverse stood beside her in her heavy coat of many colors, still and watchful. Both of them were silent. They had come to watch their Master, and they would watch.
Noah looked at the corpse, and at the Ergosphere, for a long while.
"I generated both of you," he said.
His voice was calm and far away, and the Domain seemed to lean in to hear it.
"From my own weavings, and from what I found in existence. A Half-Immense guardian’s body. A singularity of failed Immensity. I gave them to people I love, and the Tide gave you back to me in their place. You exist because I gave." He looked at the dead sovereign’s serene face. "Now I will swallow you, to see if it will all be enough."
...!
He opened his mouth.
Inside it lay blue-gold brilliance, endless, infinite, a light that went down and down without reaching any bottom, and at the heart of it, turning, countless points of perfect dark. Event horizons. Thousands of them. Millions. Every one of them a place where something could fall in and stay fallen.
He pulled!
The corpse moved!
It lifted off the blue-gold hills, slowly at first, the whole vast robed body of an Immense One rising from the vally it had pressed into the soil, and drifted toward him. The Ergosphere came with it, its bands of light stretching, smearing, its turning drawn out into long spirals as it fell toward his open mouth. Both of them gravitated to him as everything gravitates toward an event horizon, faster and faster, stretching as they came, the sovereign’s crown of pale fire drawing out into a long thread of light, the Ergosphere unwinding into ribbons of gold.
THE Infiniverse took a step back. Ruination’s beams flared.
The corpse reached him first, and went in!
It poured into the brilliance of his mouth in a long, stretched river of robe and flesh and crown, and fell into the countless event horizons, and his Infinite Dream took hold of it.
Devouring: the corpse of an Immense One.
His Dream broke it down, all of it, layer by layer, as a fire breaks down a log. The robes went first, woven of authority so old it had forgotten its own name. Then the flesh, dense beyond anything he had eaten, every cell of it saturated with settled Immensity. Then the bones, then the crown, then the serene sealed face. His Dream took each piece apart, refined it to its purest essence, and pressed that essence down into him.
His body shook!
The diamond-jade of his skin darkened, and darkened again, until it was nearly black, the tendrils of blue-gold beneath it blazing so bright they lit the Domain’s hills. His crown of light flared. His muscles locked and swelled and locked again as the Immensity of a dead sovereign packed itself into every quark of him.
Records of an Immense One acquired. Its name has worn away. Its memories have been kept.
Fragment acquired: Settled Bearing. The calm of a being that stood at the top of existence has been absorbed into THE One Foundation.
Integrated value: equivalent to 404 Quintessential Existential Chorionic Gonadotropins.
THE Osmontian Culmination. Present saturation: 72%.
...!
Seventy-two percent!
The Ergosphere came next!
It fell into his mouth in long gold ribbons, and as its turning broke apart inside his Dream, the thing it had been hiding finally held still long enough to be counted.
The Immense Ergosphere has been opened.
Contained: Existential Chorionic Gonadotropins x333.
...!
Three hundred and thirty-three!
They poured out of the broken Ergosphere into his Dream like a river of stars, every one of them a genuine Existential Chorionic Gonadotropin, the true thing that Lesser Kryos were only a quarter of, and his Infinite Dream took them in one after another after another. Each one went down into him and broke apart and filled him. He could feel the space inside his existence closing, every hollow packing tight, every last gap between his quarks filling with the essense of Immensity that would stay unborn.
Devouring: Existential Chorionic Gonadotropins.

99%.
His existence was screaming.
It was the scream of fullness, of a vessel filled to its brim. He was packed so dense that the Domain around him had begun to bend toward him, its blue-gold hills tilting, its river of light curving in toward where he stood, as though he had become the center of everything inside it. Ruination’s beams had gone still. THE Infiniverse’s eyes were wide.
The last Existential Chorionic Gonadotropin went down.
100%.
...!
Everything stopped!
The Domain held still around him. His Dream held still. His Root, his existence, all of him, packed to the absolute limit of what his present form could hold, held perfectly, silently still, like a breath drawn in and kept.
And then the prompts came, slow and grand, one after another.
THE Osmontian Culmination has reached complete saturation.
The Absolute of your present existence has been filled.
Everything that made you has been gathered: your Dreams, your Records, your Actions, your Memories, every life you lived in the death of time, every gift you gave, every death you granted, every emotion you held and every one you cast out. All of it has culminated.
An evolutionary pathway uniquely your own has formed.
But your existence, your Dreams, and your history are too vast to culminate in a single shape.
Three pathways have formed.
...!
PATHWAY I: THE Dreaming Origin.
A lifeform whose existence is a Dream that existence must dream along with. Your Empyros and Fiend halves carried to their end.
What you dream becomes true, first near you, then across Dimensions, then across whatever you can perceive. Existence itself becomes a thing you dream, and dream again, and dream differently.
You would stand at the source of things rather than among them. Every being you meet would be, in part, a dream you are having.
Born from: THE Human Dreamer, THE Waking Decree, THE Sovereign of the Lived Hour, every dream you have ever entered.
Cost: the farther you dream, the farther you stand from what you dream. The risk of becoming the author of a story you can no longer step inside.
PATHWAY II: THE Unsated Sovereign.
A lifeform of absolute weight and endless appetite. Your Fiend half carried to its end.
Your body becomes denser than any law existence can write. You devour and stay hungry. Everything you consume becomes you, and everything you become, you consume further. Even Immensity, eaten, would only make you heavier.
You would grow without ceiling by eating the grandest things in existence, one after another, forever.
Born from: THE One Foundation, THE Tide-Crowned Protagonist, THE Rendered Design, every Guard, every corpse, every Kryos you have swallowed.
Cost: a hunger with no end has no rest. The risk of becoming a thing that existence fears more than it can love.
PATHWAY III: THE Quintessential Human.
A lifeform that is human, entirely and infinitely. The first Letter you ever spoke carried to its end: I Am... Human.
You keep everything human: fear and love, doubt and hunger, the capacity to be wrong and to learn from it. And all of it becomes infinite. Your emotions generate without end. Your gifts return without end. Your people grow as you grow.
You would rise by what you feel and what you give, and carry everyone you hold dear upward with you.
Born from: THE Living Grammar, THE Sanguine Covenant, the Letter Human, every life you sheltered, every gift you gave freely, every death you refused to stay dead.
Cost: you would remain vulnerable in every way a human is vulnerable. Only, infinitely so.
...!
The last prompt came slowly.
Every Lifeform that has ever evolved has stood where you stand now, at the edge of what it was.
Most chose without ever knowing they were choosing. Existence chose through them, by hunger and cold and the pressure of their days.
You know.
Three roads lie before you, and each is truly yours. Your Existence has offered them. Walking them is yours alone.
What you become will be decided by neither your power, nor your history, nor any prophecy of three.
It will be decided by a single choice. Yours.
Choose.
...!
Noah stood in the stillness of THE Existential Root Domain, packed full to the edge of everything he had ever been, and looked at the three roads.
Behind him, Ruination and THE Infiniverse waited without a sound!
