Chapter 5840: Clues! I

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Off to the side of the plain, something else lay still in the snow!

Noah gave it a glance when the snow settled. The Huntsman’s horse. That great beast of white bones, larger than a mountain range, had been standing at the edge of the fight, and when his Dream had poured out of him to crush the hunter’s Ending, it had rolled across the horse as well.

The bones lay in a long white heap on the ice, still bound together with frost, the cold blue light gone out of its skull.

Noah looked at it for a moment, then at the hunter under his feet.

Slain: THE Flayed Huntsman. A Newly Risen Immense One.

Its kind: a Night Lifeform, risen to Immensity in the cold after being killed before even The First Sundering. Once the head of the Night Provenance Lineage of the Chase.

Its Immensity: Ending. Ages deep, now crushed.

Obtained: the corpse of an Immense One.

Obtained: its Core of Immensity. A cold, dark knot at the center of its chest, where its Immensity was seated.

Slain: the Huntsman’s mount. A Half-Immense Lifeform, a beast of the Chase bred across Ages to carry its master.

Obtained: the corpse of a Half-Immense Lifeform.

Obtained: its core singularity. A small, heavy point of collapsed cold and Root, where its existence was gathered.

Something else was still drifting in the air above the hunter’s body.

The pieces of its Immensity. When Noah crushed the Ending in his hands, it had broken apart, and the pieces had stayed. They hung over the corpse like a cold grey mist, slowly sinking, every shard of them still carrying Ages of stopping.

Noah breathed in.

The grey mist came to him as if it had been waiting to be called. It slid into his mouth and down his throat, cold and bitter, and sank to the base of his Tree. There, something old woke to meet it: the Provenance of Ending he had torn out of the Judgment that came for his evolution. The two found each other in the dark of his trunk and wound together, and his Tree shuddered once, all the way up.

Predation: the broken pieces of an Immensity of Ending.

Auto-Fusion: with your Provenance of Ending.

Your Provenance of Ending has deepened. What you end now stays ended against anything below your Order, and you may end a single part of a thing and leave the rest standing: its motion, its hunger, its chase, its cold.

What you devoured was crushed by your own Dream. It answers to that Dream now.

...!

Noah turned his hand over and looked at it.

He knew Ending better now than the hunter had. The thing had spent Ages using it like a blade. Noah could feel, already, that it could be a scalpel.

He stepped down off the hunter’s chest and reached for the Vigil.

The dream came up out of him, blue and gold and slow, and settled over both bodies like a blanket of light.

"Dream," Noah said.

HUUM!

The hunter shuddered first. Then the horse. Out of each of them rose a shape of blue-gold light, a dream of what they had been, pulling free of the bodies they had worn!

The Huntsman’s dream stood up tall and skinless and silent, its skull lit from within, the cold of its Immensity coming off it in a thin, quiet mist. Beside it, the horse’s dream climbed to its feet, white bones glowing, and shook its long skull once.

The Huntsman, a Newly Risen Dream Immensity that he could now conjure at any time and endlessly even if it died... looked down at its own glowing hands for a long time.

Then it knelt in the snow before him!

|"I hunted for The Regent for Ages,"| it said. Its voice was quieter now.

"I hunted my own blood for it. I hung my own people in my trees."

It lifted its skull. |"Tell me what to hunt now."|

"You can...hunt the ones who sent you," Noah said, while thinking about THE Regent that this Risen Dream mentioned!

The blue-gold lights in its sockets burned brighter.

Behind it, the bodies they had risen out of still lay on the ice, a bit lesser than what they were.

Their dreams were his now. What was left behind was loot.

Noah thought about devouring it. But there was a much better way!

He thought of two cocoons on a hill in his Domain, still closed after all this time.

So he gathered them instead!

His Dream wrapped around the hunter’s corpse and its Core of Immensity, and around the horse’s bones and its core singularity, and drew them up off the ice and into itself, shrinking them, holding them.

Then he sent them home. Far up, through the threads that ran out of him and back to THE Existential Dreaming Origin Domain, to the hill where two hazy shapes of blue-gold light had been glowing for so long.

The Huntsman’s corpse and its Core of Immensity went into THE Infiniverse’s cocoon.

The horse’s bones and its core singularity went into Ruination’s.

Given: the corpse and Core of Immensity of an Immense One, to THE Infiniverse.

Given: the corpse and core singularity of a Half-Immense Lifeform, to Ruination.

THE Tide That Owes Nothing has kept count of your giving.

THE Tide answers.

...!

Two lights opened in the frozen air in front of him!

The first was a Core of Immensity, the size of a fist, and it was warm. Everything the hunter’s Core had been, it was the opposite of: a small bright knot of beginning, of motion, of things starting and running on and on, pulsing with a steady golden heat.

The second was a singularity, small and heavy and bright, and inside it Noah could see movement. A herd. Thousands upon thousands of running things, every creature that had ever fled across the snow and gotten away, galloping endlessly inside a single point of light.

Returned: THE Core of the Unended Run. A Core of Immensity of Beginning, the answer to the Ending you gave away.

Returned: THE Singularity of Those Who Escaped. Every hunted thing that was never caught, gathered into one point.

They are of the second Order.

...!

Noah devoured them at once!

He opened his mouth, the event horizons turned, and he pulled. The warm Core went down first, a golden heat sliding into his chest and settling at the base of his Tree. Then the singularity, and with it the sound of thousands of hooves on snow, running and running, until it settled too.

His Tree drank!

Devoured: THE Core of the Unended Run.

Devoured: THE Singularity of Those Who Escaped.

Sap risen toward the Second Bough: 92%.

...!

Two percent.

He almost laughed out loud. Two Second Order loots, and two percent! It was ridiculous how slow the progression was, but it meant the Shard of IT he devoured had pushed him up a great deal!

He dreamed his fourteen back next.

He reached for each of them where his Provenance had kept them, and dreamed them up out of the snow one after another. The thirteen giants of the Chase rose first, their ribs glowing blue-gold. Then the scion. Then, last, the great golden shadow of the panda, which sat up at the back of the plain and looked around as if it had only been naping.

They looked different!

Harder. The blue-gold in their open ribs burned brighter, and when the cold wind off the plain touched them, it slid off their bodies instead of sinking in. They had died to Ending once. The same death would find them much harder to reach.

Risen Dreams: 16.

Those dreamed risen again have grown. What ended them once will find them harder to end.

...!

Sixteen. Fourteen giants, an Immense hunter, and its horse.

It was a small army, for an Evergrave this large. He found that suited him. He had only just started!
