Chapter 5847: Nano! Second! II

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Causes, transformed into strings of something far too intricate!

Countless of them. Purposes, wound one over another, Age upon Age, until they had grown so thick they had become an Immensity!

A purpose to keep, a purpose to drain the warm, a purpose to sit the throne, and to hold the keys, and to sweep the halls, and to feed the stolen warmth inward toward the Heart. Thousands of purposes, millions, each one a thread of cold, all of them braided together into one vast, gaunt shape.

And every one of them rested on a single Cause at the bottom.

Its keystone.

He looked closer, and his gold eyes stayed calm, and behind them, something cold and certain settled.

It belonged to someone else.

It was a Cause of Stewardship. A purpose given, not made: to keep a hall, to carry a set of keys, to tend the dead for someone else. The Caretaker had given it, Ages ago, to a thin, quiet servant. And every purpose the Regent had grown since, every theft, every Draining, every Age on her throne, had been built on top of the one purpose she had handed it.

He knew Causes. Eighteen of them had been his once, cast out long ago, and they still ran through every Dimension and every Observable Existence inside THE Infiniverse. And now he carried Teloi in every quark of his body, two hundred decillion small declared aims. And he knew the oldest rule of them all.

A Cause answers backward to its giver.

He thought of Damodred, the last of the Laestrygonians. A whole people THE Sleepless Fiend had wiped out. Noah had wondered why, once. Now, from this height, he saw it. They had been a lineage that could form their own Causes. A people who could make purposes, could unmake them if they grew grand enough.

If they produced multiple Immense Ones who could seamlessly grow and generate more and more Immensity rapidly....

Those Who Remain had wanted no such thing to exist.

He had his own aims now, in every grain of his body.

The thin path opened in front of him, and he followed it all the way to the end.

It started with Emotive.

In this path, she stayed out of the way of every blow. She did the opposite. She turned toward the Gaunt Regent, and she let herself feel the worst thing in her. Envy. Taken to the end of what envy could be.

Wanting what the Regent was so completely that she reached out and took it: its purposes, one after another, the keeping and the draining and the pride in its stolen throne, pulled off it thread by thread until the Regent stood stripped down to the bottom of itself.

Then Ruination.

In that same sliver, Ruination reached for its dream and held it. The plain wooden chair. The warm hall. Someone bowing. The one dream the Regent might have run into to grow its purposes back. She held it exactly as it was, and in her Dream, nothing she held could be erased.

Then THE Infiniverse.

She opened. Just a little. One realm, wrapped around the Regent’s place in the square, so that for one sliver of an instant the Regent was standing inside her, cut off from the other three Night Lords and from the Faceless One’s eyes. And inside her ran every Cause Noah had ever cast out, threaded through every Dimension she held. The moment the Regent stood inside her, those Causes would wind around what was left of it, and pull it toward him. They had been his. They still answered to their giver.

And last, him.

The coal in the Regent’s robes was the Caretaker’s last fire. Her own hand had lit it. When the Cause of Stewardship felt that fire, it would turn toward it, as every Cause turns toward the one who gave it. Toward the coal. Toward whoever held it.

And his Teloi would do the rest. Two hundred decillion quarks declaring a single aim at once, a purpose of his own, made by no one but him: this stewardship is over.

A given Cause, pulled by his old Causes, drawn to its giver’s fire, and met by an aim no one could take from him.

He would grip it. And he would collapse it.

And when the keystone fell, every purpose built on top of it would fall too.

It would take less than a nanosecond!

And then he looked at the cost.

To reach into the Regent that fast and heavily, he would have to drop every layer of his Dream facing the other three. Leave himself open on three sides for one sliver of an instant.

He watched what happened next.

The Choir-Mother’s Penance, the Drowned Margrave’s Drowning, and the Warden’s Refusal all reached him at once. They split him in half. Down the middle, from the crown of his head, through the Tree in his chest. His Dreaming Human Origin tore very, very painfully. Two halves of him fell apart in the black water of his first dungeon.

He watched it for a long time.

The cost was enormous. A wound to the very center of what he was. Pain beyond anything he had known.

What it bought was more. An Established Immense One, dead. The square broken. And every one of them standing beside him still alive at the end of it.

He would dream himself back together. He had to.

"Okay," Noah said.

He opened his Dream to the three of them, and showed them the path.

Emotive and Ruination and THE Infiniverse all had their eyes shine brilliantly as they were shown a dream!

The instant ended.

Less than a nanosecond.

Emotive turned toward the Gaunt Regent, and her hair went green, and she wanted!

HUUM!

She wanted it as only she could want anything, completely, every color in her turning to one color, envy so total that it stopped being a feeling and became a hand. It reached into the Regent and took. Its purposes came away one after another, the keeping and the draining and the hunger and the pride, threads of cold torn off it and pulled into her, until the Regent swayed, stripped down to what lay at the bottom of it.

Ruination reached for the Regent’s dream, the plain chair in the warm hall, and held it. Exactly as it was. The Regent tried to flee into it, to grow its purposes back, and found it locked in place.

THE Infiniverse opened, and the Regent was inside her!

And Noah’s old Causes woke. All of them, running through every Dimension she carried, the Causes he had cast out on his knees under a stone in the obsidian sands. They rose through her realm in long threads of light and wound around what was left of the Regent, and pulled. Toward him. They had been his, and they remembered.

And there it was!

The keystone. Laid bare, glowing, at the very bottom of the emptied Regent: a single Cause, old and plain, wound so tightly that everything else had been built on it. A Cause of Stewardship. And bound up in it, iron and dark, a ring of keys taken from the Caretaker’s hall.

Beside it, burning red in the Regent’s robes, the coal.

The Cause turned toward the fire. Slowly, as if remembering something. Toward its giver.

Noah dropped his layers to the other three.

The Penance, the Drowning, and the Refusal hit him at once.

He felt himself split!

BOOM!

Down the middle. From the crown of his head through the Tree in his chest. The pain was white and endless, a tearing through the center of everything he was, and for one sliver of an instant there were two halves of him in the black water.

The right half of him reached into the Regent.

His hand closed around the Cause of Stewardship, and it let him. It had turned toward its giver’s fire, and he was the one reaching out of that light. His old Causes held it from below. And in every quark of his body, his Teloi spoke at once, two hundred decillion small voices declaring one aim, made by no one but him.

This stewardship is over.

He collapsed it!

The keystone Cause caved in on itself and went out, and the keys bound inside it came apart into rust.

The Gaunt Regent came apart with them!

Every purpose it had ever built on that one Cause lost its footing at once. The keeping, the draining, the throne, the halls, the stolen warmth fed inward toward the Heart, Age upon Age of purposes, all of it collapsing from the bottom up. Its long thin body unraveled into grey threads, its crown of finger-bones crakced from the front to the back, and its pale eyes went wide, and in them, for the last time, Noah saw its dream: a plain chair, a warm hall, someone bowing. Then even that was gone.

Its face held utter shock and incredulity as its Immensity fizzled out as if it lost a critical core holding it together, and its corpse disappeared right after as a brilliant light of Dreams wrapped around it!

Then Noah dreamed himself whole.

His two halves came together in the black water, the tear sealing from the crown down, slowly, white pain turning to gold as the Dreaming Human Origin knit back into itself. His Tree shuddered, and held, and his constellations flickered back into place one by one.

It had taken less than a nanosecond!

...!

The cavern was silent!

The snow had stopped falling and the Choir-Mother’s song had stopped; the Drowned Margrave’s hundred dead mouths hung open and still; the Warden of the Heart stood with its armored hand still raised, perfectly motionless.

Where the Gaunt Regent had been, grey threads drifted down into the black water and floated there.

At the edges of the record, fourteen Lineage heads stared, vast and frozen.

And across the square, the thing wearing Noah’s face had stopped studying him. It simply stood there, looking at the place where an Established Immense One had been a moment ago.

Noah straightened.

A long gold line ran down the middle of his body, from his crown to his chest, where the split had sealed. It was still healing. It still hurt.

Emotive stood in front of him, alive, her hair slowly going from green back to every color, shaking and grinning at the same time. Ruination at his left. THE Infiniverse at his right, closing her opened realm softly behind her. And above them, the Amalgamation of Dreams, its rings of dreams turning slow.

Noah looked up at the three remaining Night Lords, and at the Faceless One, and spoke.

His voice was quiet. It carried across the whole record, into every corner, into the place where a young man still sat on the floor of a boss room dreaming of a number without an end.

"From this point on," Noah said, "nothing in existence will be guaranteed."

He closed his hand around the coal.

"The only thing guaranteed will be my mark upon existence... across space and time!"

BOOM!

The prompts came slowly, and they came from somewhere very deep.
