Every choice made in existence opens more choices behind it. A lifeform turns left instead of right, or speaks instead of staying silent, or reaches out and takes something instead of leaving it alone, and from that one small moment countless new threads spread outward, each one a possibility that did not exist a heartbeat before. Most of those threads go nowhere, and fade, and are forgotten, but some of them run on and on across existence, crossing other threads and pulling on them, until a single choice made in one quiet corner can be felt in places its maker will never see.
And there is a rule that runs through all of those threads, older than any King and plainer than any Narrative, which is that shining things are noticed.
A great power rising, a rare treasure surfacing, a name climbing a banner, all of them catch the eyes of many, and most of the time, those many eyes can do nothing but look. The truly great shining things are too far away, or too well guarded, or simply too strong, and so they shine on untouched while everyone else watches them and wishes.
But sometimes a shining thing appears that is weak. It holds a place it does not seem to deserve, a name too high for the strength behind it, a prize too large for the hands holding it, and the moment that is noticed, everything changes. Looking turns into reaching, and the many eyes become many hands, and from every direction of existence, things begin to move toward it.

In THE Undefined Gaps, the battle between the Third Legion of THE Shepherd of Falling Stars and the Nightmare from THE Fallow had ended, and the Legion was leaving. Of the nine great stellar lotuses that had flown into the Gaps in perfect formaton, only five still flew, and one of those five was burning along its outer petals, shedding blue fire as it went. The other four were gone, shattered into drifting fragments of starlight and grey glass, their Ancients and Established and Newly Risen scattered through the dark in pieces.
The corpses were everywhere. They hung in the Gaps in their thousands, Immense Ones who had come here to fight for a King’s Narrative, some of them broken and some of them frozen in grey glass with their own near-deaths still pinned in front of their faces, and the surviving lotuses had to pass between them as they went. No one in the retreating Legion looked at them for very long.
Behind them, THE Stillness of Every Death That Almost Happened did not follow. It hung in the dark where the battle had been, a vast quiet shape of grey glass with crimson eyes opening and closing across its surface, and it watched them go. It had not been defeated, and it had not even been badly hurt, and it simply let the Legion leave, just as it let everything leave, holding its breath and watching with a patience that was worse than any pursuit.
---
At the front of the retreating lotuses flew Ione Kalliste. Her blue halo was cracked in three places, and of the nine cerulean blades that had circled her when she came into the Gaps, only four still turned around her, and two of those were chipped along their edges. Her corona had dimmed to a thin blue glow around her body, and there was grey glass grown into the skin of her left arm from the shoulder to the wrist, and blood ran slowly from a wound in her side that would not close.
She had been showing her King everything, the whole time, through the bond between his Narrative and hers. Every blow she had struck and every lotus she had lost and every Immense One who had died under the grey glass, she had let it all pass through her to him, as she always did when she fought in his name, because THE Bloom That Answers Calamity was a Narrative that grew in his service. Now, flying at the head of what was left of his Third Legion, she felt his attention settle fully onto her for the first time since the battle began.
Then she heard his voice. It boomed through the bond between them, vast and warm and terrible, the voice of THE Shepherd of Falling Stars, and every surviving Immense One in the five remaining lotuses heard it at the same moment and went still where they flew.
"Ione," the Shepherd said, "you will join your forces with the Unfathomable Immense Ones of THE Iron Psalm, who are still waiting near the place where the Legacy of THE Acharya used to stand. It is becoming more and more dangerous for Kings ourselves to move openly across existence, because a King can lose his prestige far too easily now, and so far, the only King whose name has moved both up and down the banner is THE Dreaming Human Origin."
The bond hummed, and his voice grew more thoughtful. "Based on everything that has happened, and on what our own forces saw before they died, and on what the Iron Psalm has shared with me, THE Dreaming Human Origin must be the leader of what remains of the Legacy of Lucy. He is weak, weak enough that he could not kill the Unfathomables of the Iron Psalm, and yet somehow he ran from them and took the whole Legacy with him. He has disappeared from where that Legacy used to be, where the Fallow now spreads through the Undefined Gaps, but our forces in THE Infinite Carcosa died a short while ago before his prestige arose, which means that he either passed through the Carcosa, or ran to it."
His voice grew colder then, and heavier, and the five remaining lotuses trembled in the dark. "Find him. Our forces have lost twice now, fighting alone, and that is a heavy thing for a King to carry. Face and prestige are unimportant things in themselves, Ione, and yet they are also of an importance that cannot be measured, because they are what the banner remembers. You have his image and his likeness from the Iron Psalm, and their forces will join yours, and then you will set out."
...!
The bond went quiet, and Ione Kalliste stopped. The five lotuses stopped behind her, petals trembling, the burning one still shedding blue fire into the dark, and every Immense One in them waited to see what she would do. She frowned, slowly, because she had felt that forest in the Gaps with her own Shinjitsu during the battle, the forest of obsidian and gold that had not been the Nightmare’s, and she had not forgotten how it felt.
Then she lifted her right hand, the one without glass grown into it, and waved it once through the dark in front of her. The image the Iron Psalm had shared with her King came up out of the air, large and clear and burning faintly, so that every surviving Immense One of the Third Legion could see it. It was a man in a robe of dreams and nightmares, with an obsidian crown turning slowly above his head and a single gold ember burning inside the crown, and his eyes were mismatched, one gold and one obsidian, looking out at all of them with a calm that seemed out of place on a being the banner called weak.
THE Dreaming Human Origin hung in the dark in front of the battered Legion, exactly as the Iron Psalm had seen him, and Ione looked at his face for a long moment without speaking. Behind her, a few of the surviving Immense Ones murmered to each other, because the image was smaller and plainer than any of them had expected, and it was very hard to believe that something that looked like this had made two Kings’ Legions bleed. Ione did not murmur, because she was remembering the forest.
And as the image hung there, far off across the Gaps, light years away in the direction of the hollow where a Legacy had once stood, a pressure began to rise. It came toward them steadily across the dark, the auras of Unfathomable Immense Ones moving together, iron and fire and the long grim weight of a Narrative that had been made in a forge. The forces of THE Iron Psalm were coming to join the Shepherd’s Legion, and in the burning image floating in front of them all, the man with the mismatched eyes looked out over every one of them and did not blink!
