<The Mighty Hoe>
The mighty Hoe had been lying across THE Farmer’s knees when he wrote it, and so she had felt every word. She had felt his finger touch the pale scroll and the words come out of him one by one, not invented but simply set down, plain records of what he had already been doing every day, and she had understood each of them the moment it was written. A farmer who owed existence nothing. An existence that owed him nothing back. A gift that came back larger than it had gone.
Then she had felt it happen. The giving had gone out of him in a long warm wave, into the soil and the rivers and the Fallow and every distant place he had ever touched, and she had felt existence take it in, and turn it over, and give it back, and what it gave back was more. He gave that too. It came back greater still, and every time it went around, it passed through her on its way, because she was lying across his knees and she was part of him.
She had never felt anything so rich. When the rivers of Pure Existential Essence came pouring in from across the dark, every color existence had, she had felt a share of them flow through her own pieces before they went on into him, and she had hummed with them the whole time, quietly, without meaning to, along with the farm. The sapling had risen in the snow, and the walls around him had grown thicker, and the cat had gone silent, and through all of it the mighty Hoe had lain very still and simply let herself be filled.
It was then that her seams fully and absolutely closed for all 5 pieces. She did not notice it at first, because it happened so gently. The authority that had flowed through her ever since he first picked her up had always gone into her seams first, the jagged places where her five pieces had been stitched together with his Dreams, softening the edges a little more each time, and now, with so much giving running through her, the last of those edges simply let go of being edges.
The five pieces of her were no longer five. The seams were gone, and the old severed connections that had been cut when she was first broken, the ones she had thought would ache forever, reached across the places where her pieces met and found one another again and held. For the first time since she had become aware of anything at all, there was no pain in her anywhere. She was whole, or as whole as five pieces could ever be, and she felt more complete than she had ever imagined feeling.
And because she was whole, the pull changed. All this time, she had been reaching for the other pieces of herself out there in the dark, gently, as she had once drawn the fifth piece home, and they had always answered faintly, a long way off.
Now the reaching was not gentle. It was absolute. She felt herself pull, and she felt the pieces out across existence feel her pull, and all at once they were not answering faintly anymore. They were coming.
Four of them. She felt them tear loose from wherever they had been lying, in four separate corners of existence that had never known what they held, and she felt them begin to move. They were the only four she could pull. There were others, she knew now, more pieces of IT scattered across existence, and she could feel every one of them, but those others were held. Other lifeforms had found them, and claimed them, and bound them tightly into themselves, and when she reached for those, she met hands that would not open.
These four, no one had claimed. They came across the dark toward her as four long streaks of white-gold fire, burning through Dimensions and between Observable Existences without slowing, and she could feel them getting closer with every heartbeat of the farm. The snowing sky over the Carcosa lit up gold at its far edges, and then nearer, and then the four streaks broke through the clouds above the farm at once and came down out of the sky together.
THE Farmer was on his feet before they arrived. He had felt them coming through her, she realizd, and he stood in the doorway of the shell house with his eyes wide and his face turned up to the falling fire, and the cat lept off the porch and Lygara came out onto the step behind him. The four streaks slowed as they came down, and they did not strike the ground. They circled THE Farmer instead.
That was what the mighty Hoe wanted. Each of the four pieces was wrapped in Narrative, thick old layers of it gathered over Ages of lying in the dark, and before she took them into herself, she wanted him to have it. He had given her so much, endlessly, without ever once asking for anything back, and she wanted, for once, to be the one who gave.
So the four Shards of IT circled him slowly in the snowing light, and as they circled, their Narrative peeled away from them in long shining ribbons and wound around him and sank into him, layer after layer, until every one of the four was bare and bright and humming. THE Farmer stood in the center of it with his hands open at his sides, and he looked down at her where she lay in his grip, and she felt his surprise, and under the surprise, something warm that she thought might be gratitude.
Then the four pieces came down to her, and she took them in. They touched her blade and her handle one after another and sank into her, and with each one, she felt a new seam open, raw and jagged, the old familiar ache returning for an instant. Five pieces became six, and seven, and eight. And then the last of them settled into her, and there were nine.
The new seams did not stay. THE Farmer’s hands were on her, and his warm authority was already pouring into her, and under it the four new seams softened and closed and let go of being seams, just as the others had, until there was nothing left of them at all. The nine pieces of her fused into one under his warm light, and she began to shine!
She shone brighter than she ever had, white-gold and blue-gold together, so bright that the snow falling near her turned to points of light, and as she shone, she felt herself grow finer and clearer and more refined, every rough place in her smoothing away until she was the purest thing she had ever been. And then the shining did not stop. It deepened, and gathered, and drew in on itself, and the mighty Hoe felt herself begin to change!
Oh, she began to change!
