Blurb:

Keiran, millennia old archmage, has managed to successfully control the reincarnation cycle and retain all of his memories and skills. That’s about the only thing that’s gone right. Mana seems to have all but disappeared, and a cabal of mages from a nearby city who’ve been using the villagers of his new home as a mana farm for their own purposes.

How long was Keiran gone? Where did the mana go? Does it have anything to do with the missing moon from the sky or the bizarre loss of the written language from his first life? Why are the best mages on the level of bumbling apprentices? Filled with questions and determined to find answers, Keiran journeys to the city of Derro.

The Wolf Pack rules over the desert city, and if Keiran wants access to the knowledge they hold, he’ll have to fight for it, one bloody step at a time. For all his skill, he’s trapped in the body of a child in a world where mana is as scarce as gold. Can he overcome a group of mages who’ve had decades to grow their power base, or will the Wolves of the Wastes drag him down and eat him alive?

Summary of Book 1:

Keiran of the Night Vale sought to escape the shackles of his own aging body, and to that end, he pioneered soul magic that would allow him to reclaim memories of his past life once he’d reincarnated. The spells worked, but when he awoke again, he found himself trapped in the body of a child living in a desert with no mana. His plans derailed, he set about the tedious and time-consuming task of regaining a modicum of power using his own slowly generating internal mana.

Thanks to some complications arising from the process of igniting his new mana core, Keiran’s new family quickly became suspicious of him. With so little mana available, the village was careful to harvest every last shred of it from all its members, and by awakening himself as a mage, Keiran had made the mistake of standing out too much.

The village’s governor and mage-protector, Noctra, also noticed that something was amiss. Mistakenly believing it to be Keiran’s father that was the source of this new mana instead of Keiran himself, Noctra kidnapped the man with plans to use him as a way to pay off his debt to a cabal of mages based in the city of Derro. Noctra had come from there originally and had been exiled to the small village of Keiran’s rebirth years ago, where he ran a scam to steal mana from the villagers in exchange for protecting them from a nonexistent threat.

Noctra’s actions set him on a collision course with Keiran, one which proved to be the elder mage’s downfall. Keiran killed both Noctra and his handler, an adept named Iskara who also worked for the mysterious cabal. With the village freed from the evil mage’s predations, all should have been well, but Keiran saw a new threat looming over them.

The cabal wasn’t just going to give up its source of free mana. Noctra had owed, and they would surely send someone to collect. That was exactly what happened, and not long after, a duo of mages and their warrior mercenaries attacked the village. Keiran fought them off with some help from the locals, but quickly found himself on the outs with the newly-formed council.

Appalled at his willingness to kill and maim and uncomfortably aware that they already lacked the ability to control Keiran, the council met to decide his fate. It was a vote of exile, one that they knew they couldn’t enforce, but fortunately for them, Keiran had already decided to visit Derro to investigate this cabal. He’d uncovered too many mysteries about changes in the world that had taken place between his death and rebirth, and the tiny village held no answers. After saying his farewells to his family, Keiran left on a journey to discover the truth of things.
