Chapter 947: Different Opponents.

Despite keeping his eyes wide open and trying to understand how the teleportation device worked, Alec still couldn’t grasp the mechanism behind it.

One moment he was in the Royal Fighting Arena of the Northern Capital; and the next, he had been teleported to a new environment he felt oddly unfamiliar with.

The instant he arrived, he surveyed his surroundings and just as he suspected, there was also a light-gem behind him like the one he’d seen on the water screen before he activated his Badge.

“Survival mission: Defend the Tower.”

A loud voice rang out, hearing “defend the tower,” Alec took his time to study the terrain he’d been sent to.

As he noticed a scatter of broken bricks and rocks placed almost purposefully, as if to allow the enemies use them for cover.

He swiftly activated his Energy Eyes and looked ahead, as a blue hue lit his iris and as expected he realized the areas within the gem’s light-radius were densely packed with… something.

“Hm. Why do they look more like robots?” he muttered, noting their bodies were built like machines rather than any living lifeform he knew.

Another clue was because despite the fact that they moved, there was no “life flame” inside them.

Normally, Alec saw a flame-like aura in every living being when using his Energy Eyes.

And since these figures moved without any such flame, he concluded they had to be robots, golems, or puppets.

Without hesitating, he summoned Legion, his best golem for detection.

Legion glanced once and barked, “Get down!” The very next second, Alec felt a shift in the air.

Bullets whipped toward them from multiple directions, however while Legion had already dropped into a crouch; Alec was still parsing the mission objective, and had reacted a heartbeat slower.

That instant of delay was enough to clarify his objective, protect the gem, the source of light illuminating the area around his tower.

[> Mid-Tier Spell — Gravity Push <]

Alec then proceeded to thrust his right hand forward, dragging down in mid-air as a purple sheen coated his palm and the air tightened under an arcane force.

More than half the bullets were seized by the Gravity Push and dropped to the ground like dead flies.

For the remaining rounds still cutting through the air, Alec changed plans, he raised his left hand to meet his right.

[> Mid-Tier Spell — Gravity Pull <]

He cast the second spell instantly, realizing things were getting out of hand; he wasn’t sure how durable the gem was, but he was willing to test it with the enemy’s volley of mana bullets.

Spreading both hands wide, he activated his gravity control again as the purple hue crawled over his fingers as he yanked the air as if drawing two invisible ropes together.

Two huge boulders near the tower ripped free and shot skyward from the right and left at ridiculous speed.

They met mid-air with a crunching mash, Alec’s gravity grip held them suspended as he forced the merge to continue under the bullet assault.

The bullets slammed into the fused mass instead of the tower, as the first wave neatly intercepted.

However Alec wasn’t done, as his hands blurred through a chain of signs before he unleashed another spell he’d been holding back.

[> Mid-Tier Spell — Earth Fortress <]

The purple glow around the boulders faded, and was replaced by a deep brown aura, earth particles coiled and compacted; the mass reshaped itself, merging from two jagged rocks into a metallic-looking shield carved as a beast’s face with its maw agape.

“Ahhhh!”

From below, Alec realized the clumsy-looking cyborgs had started to close in and were moving toward the tower without fear.

Right now, he could see some of them already stepping into the area illuminated by the gem’s light.

“Second round is about to start, if all enemies are not eliminated before the second round, the opponents deployed for the second round will multiply.”

As Alec was still trying to decide his next move, a stopwatch icon appeared in the air, counting down to the start of the second round.

Normally, seeing something like this would make most people fidgety and desperate to finish the mission, especially since he was alone, but Alec felt none of that.

He was extremely calm; as he had felt earlier it still wasn’t time to go all-out, so he’d lay back his hands.

“Kill them all. Simple and effective.”

Alec finally decided he’d had enough and issued the order to Legion, who nodded and leapt from the top of the tower.

As weapons were already forming over Legion’s forearms from his nanobot tech.

[> Attack-Class Ability — Bastion’s Blast Shield <]

However, weapons weren’t the only thing he prepared; he also set up a defensive counter against any attack the ground-level cyborgs might have.

A light-blue spherical barrier snapped into place around him, a full 360-degree shield.

In another zone, the War God team materialized around a similar gem that cast a tight circle of light around them.

The moment they arrived, a voice spoke into each of their minds, instructing them to defend the tower.

Immediately, waves of beastmen surged toward them from every direction:

—from the north, wolfmen (a lesser bloodline than werewolves) charged;

—from the south, salamander demonic beasts crawled and leapt;

—from the east, catfolk warriors sprinted low and fast;

—and from the west, minotaurs thundered forward.

This was a completely different setup from what Alec was facing in his own trial grounds.

Because unlike the cyborgs in Alec’s trial, which used the boulders for cover while attacking through gaps, these beastmen didn’t feint at all, they charged the tower house at the center with fury and rage.

Seeing the massive horde rushing them, the War God Mage Academy team didn’t need to be told twice; before they knew what they had to do was cut the enemies down.

Lucas reached for the sword on his back, but before he could draw it, Pale caught his hand and shook his head.

“There’s no need for either you or Beatrice to step in, I believe the rest of us can finish this round without our vice-captains showing their hand this early.”

“Don’t forget—people are watching outside, and this is just the start of the tournament,” Pale said, glancing around at the others.

They nodded at his suggestion because it made perfect sense, after all it was just the second trial and they didn’t see any reason for their vice captain to give out information about their increased strength now.

However there was an ulterior motive to what pale did, the main reason he had said it was exactly because people were watching; he wanted to show off, and he knew that if Lucas or Beatrice moved, they would overshadow him and steal the spotlight.

So, to keep the attention on himself, he chose his words carefully. Lucas agreed to the plan and folded his arms, while the rest of the War God Mage Acdemy team got to work as Beatrice looked uninterested in what was happening.

With all that settled Pale was

the first to leap off the tower, arms spread, diving straight into the wave of oncoming enemies.
