Observing from the second line of defense, Connor and Leon realized that the mages attempting to leap from the rampart would never escape in time, because above them, was the colossal sword held by the astral manifestation behind Julian mirroring his movement, as it hurtled down the blade toward that section of the city wall.Suddenly, ethereal strings materialized out of thin air, coiling around more than a thousand mage warrior units and pulling them directly out of danger.
The sword ended up crashing into the center part of the specified wall section, and the unfortunate few who weren’t rescued by the strings were blasted away by the explosive shockwave of crumbling stone.
Although the majority of the city wall held firm, however; the targeted section of the walls that the light-class mage unit had been bombarding collapsed entirely.
“Attack!”
Towering over his comrades with radiant brilliant golden halo light behind him, a paladin general thrust his immense greatsword forward with one hand as effortlessly as if it weighed nothing, causing the rank and file paladin warrior mages to dash forward with increased morale.
A blazing, halo-like crest had materialized behind him as his cape billowed in the wind, as he showed the marking of an hero-rank figure.
Yet he was not the only hero rank figure present; there were three other hero-class Paladins that were standing alongside him, each wielding a unique weapon and radiating a distinct light from their respective halos.
One halo glowed like a burning wheel, while another featured smaller blades of light lining its edge, giving it a spiky, lethal appearance.
Even a female warrior stood among their paladin ranks as well, however alongside these elite Paladins heroes were three other extraordinary hero class figures as well—an hero class Templar, a Light affinity Battle mage, and a Priest.
This trio operated under Julian, whereas the rest of the hero class Paladins apart from the Flaming Paladin were affiliated with Cassandra and the Lightbringer twins.
In truth, they served as subordinate lords beneath him and since their progression had lagged behind, they have been able to summon a lesser amount to hero rank figures, as they only allowed merely a single hero level lord apiece to engage in this battle.
Altogether, roughly seven hero-tier combatants arrayed themselves to face the three surviving heroes of Alec.
While the rank-and-file mage soldiers clashed, the hero-level figures were already locking eyes with one another.
Knight and Sophia immediately closed in to join Alec’s heroes—Connor, Leon, and Unbreakable.
Although Alec’s group faced a clear numerical disadvantage, they still showed defiance as only three of their opponents had reached the Tier 7 realm, giving them reason to stand their ground.
"Holy Judgment Sword!"
In the blink of an eye, the flaming Paladin charged directly at Connor, as an astral entity materialized behind him, mirroring the one summoned by Julian Soul earlier, though much smaller in scale.
And rather than emitting Julian’s light-blue radiance, this entity glowed with intense light and a fiery aura, standing just slightly taller than the warrior.
When he merged with the Paladin mid-air, his body seemed to exclude a certain heat as there was a rise in temperature around him and the sword in his hand was coated with flames, as he channeled its momentum while he tilted forward in the air before launching a sweeping horizontal slash at Connor.
In response, Connor nonchalantly flicked out his greatsword with his right hand, holding the blade in a reverse grip, this caused a sharp clang echoed as their weapons collided, sending sparks flying and driving localized shockwaves through the ground beneath them.
Unanchored in midair, the paladin with the flaming halo was left vulnerable as Connor struck the weakest point of his attack, before the paladin could twist his body to regain control or launch a counter, he saw Connor’s left fist coming straight at him, as it slammed directly into his face, all while he was still using the left to gripping a small one-handed axe—.
The force of the punch strike sent the paladin staggering backward, completely off-balance. Capitalizing on the opening, Connor expertly twirled the short handle of the axe in his hand, before catching it in a firm grip, as he was prepared to unleash a lethal horizontal arc aimed straight for the paladin’s neck, from right to left.
Just before the blade could connect, Connor caught sight of a massive shield radiating a brilliant Light aura barreling toward him at immense speed, this cause him to abruptly abandon his intentions to finish the Paladin before him, as he shifted his focus entirely to defense then by raising his two weapons high in a block.
[? Mid Tier Spell - Shadow Portal Space ?]
Just as the shield was about to strike, a massive shadow portal matching its exact size tore open directly in front of Connor, swallowing the weapon whole.
Taking advantage of the brief distraction, the flaming paladin pushed off the ground and retreated to create space between them. For the first time, he realized he was completely outmatched by the Barbarian lord.
Glancing to the side, Connor spotted Sophia, with sweat lined her forehead as she twisted her hands mid-air, with dark wisps of shadow elemental energy swirling around her fingers.
[? Mid Tier Spell - Shadow Portal Reversal ?]
A second portal ruptured open, expelling the absorbed shield and sending it hurtling back toward its origin at a much even faster speed and force.
Connor followed its trajectory, bringing his gaze lock-step with a towering light-class warrior.
This opponent was a hero-level Templar.
Where Paladins served as the swordsmen of the Holy Church, Templars acted as its heavily armored juggernauts. Clad in massive plate armor that artificially expanded his imposing stature, this particular Templar also wielded a giant war hammer.
"Thank you, but stay behind me—I might not be able to protect you if you get too close," Connor said before charging forward.
"Come at me! Hahaha!" The Templar boomed in delight as he noticed Connor beginning to close the distance.
At that moment, the redirected shield shot forward with heightened velocity and momentum after Sophia expelled it with shadow energy, seeing the power behind it he just felt he shouldn’t take it likely.
[? High Tier Spell - Sacred Bulwark ?]
Reacting instantly, the Templar cast a high-tier defensive spell, as an overlaying armor of radiant light encased his already bulky plate mail, bolstering his defenses to an even ridiculous stage as glowing holy runes burned into his body.
The spell transformed him into a relentless juggernaut, as the returning shield closed in, he slammed his massive war hammer into it, sending it flying into the air and robbing it of some of its forward drive, though the shield spun in midair but it still dashed at the Templar and lunged at him once more, even though most of its force was absecnt.
He then proceeded to catch it with his left hand which he stretched forward, absorbing the impact as it skidded him back a few paces.
Before he could catch his breath, Connor had already closed the distance and delivered a lethal slash toward his neck aiming to take his life.
The Templar then hastily raised his hammer to parry, but Connor moved the smaller axe in his hand to off-hand hooked the weapon, yank it back and use the momentum to disarm him.
Connor immediately followed up with a heavy kick to his midsection, sending the Templar sliding backward across the ground. Unshaken by the blow, the Templar quickly regained his footing, far less rattled than the flaming paladin had been.
“Finally, a worthy opponent,” the Templar grinned. “You’ll have to do better than that, you know.”
“Then you had better keep up,” Connor replied, unleashing his aura, as Qi surged outward, enveloping both his blade and axe in a dense layer as he re-evaluated his targets: the flaming Paladin, which now set in a firm combat stance, and the Templar, who had rebalanced his shield since it was still disarmed.
A tense silence stretched between them, heavy with silent tactical calculations, before all three lunged forward simultaneously.
