Chapter 2487: battlefield

Inside the Soul Society—

"My god..." someone murmured as the horrifying scene below the mountain replaced everything else that had occupied their attention only moments earlier.

Only seconds earlier, most of the spectators had been shouting at the top of their lungs, complaining and arguing among themselves, even after realizing that the man sitting before them was Robin Burton himself, the very person whose actions were reshaping the entire cosmic order at this very moment.

As far as they were concerned, the fact that he was Robin Burton didn’t somehow justify wasting their time and forcibly replacing the war broadcasts with some ridiculous birthday celebration while he sat comfortably on a mountain eating cake!

Just how arrogant and absurd did someone have to be to do something like this, especially while countless eyes across the universe were waiting to follow the ongoing war?

But suddenly, without anyone ordering them to stop or even having the time to exchange another opinion, everyone fell completely silent... Even the sounds of breathing from those watching in the outside world could no longer be heard.

The view currently being broadcast directly from Billy’s perspective was simply terrifying, enough to erase all the complaints and arguments that had filled the air moments earlier.

At that moment, there were roughly ten thousand Crimson Plague individuals before him, gathered around and violently tearing into an enormously massive dark corpse shaped like a seahorse beast with three tails, their countless bodies surrounding the enormous creature as they devoured it!

Not far away, the exact same scene was repeating itself—a gigantic corpse surrounded by thousands of Crimson Plague individuals tearing into it from every direction. But this time, almost no one focused on those terrifying open mouths and their savage eating nearly as much as they focused on the sheer size of the corpse itself, and especially on the enormous size of its fangs and claws!

"A Space Beast..." someone murmured in an extremely low voice somewhere within the Grand Hall, almost as though he were speaking the words to himself while trying to confirm what his own eyes were showing him.

Those quiet murmurs quickly began spreading throughout the enormous audience, one person after another repeating the same words while continuing to stare at that terrifying scene, until the same identification could be heard from countless directions.

Anyone with even the slightest amount of general knowledge would recognize those creatures as Space Beasts, even members of the younger generation. Information about them had already become widespread after the Virillion incident and the incident in the Mid Sector where the Cosmic Elder himself had been forced to intervene!

...Billy’s perspective rose slightly above its previous angle, and he used his modest soul power to pierce through the thick clouds with his vision, allowing what he saw to extend across a distance of dozens of kilometers.

The ground across that enormous area was drenched in black blood, while the ocean stretching to his right had become so dark and thick in appearance that it looked like tar. At least twenty corpses of newborn Space Beasts were clearly visible within his field of vision alone, scattered throughout the area, and judging from what could still be seen farther away, there appeared to be even more corpses beyond them in the distance.

At the far left edge of Billy’s expanded vision, an entire army of the Crimson Plague could be seen standing in formation.

Gulp

The moment everyone saw that formation clearly through Billy’s perspective and understood what exactly they were looking at, countless spectators instinctively swallowed hard.

There were hundreds of thousands of them, lined up together like a true organized army rather than a chaotic gathering of bloodthirsty creatures, wearing armor and holding weapons and shields while divided into distinct battalions and standing ready... Those things, whose thirst for blood was obvious from everything they had just witnessed, remained completely motionless even as they watched their own kind devouring flesh voraciously nearby, standing calmly upon mud thoroughly soaked with blood and beneath air filled with its fumes!

Above that enormous army, there were at least fifty scattered Crimson Plague individuals positioned separately from one another, all of them silently observing everything taking place below and remaining ready to intervene if anything happened outside what had been planned.

ROAAAAA—

At that moment, a tremendous roar suddenly forced Billy to turn his gaze back toward that enormous circular golden opening, and there, within the Passage Gate, a gigantic beast had already pushed its massive head through and begun crawling its way inside.

Immediately, without any visible hesitation, a battalion of three thousand Crimson Plague individuals from among those standing farther away rushed forward and attacked the emerging creature from every direction at once. They tore apart its limbs as they fought to bring it down, and a quarter of their own number were killed during the process, but in the end, within roughly a single minute, they had successfully subdued the enormous creature and immediately begun eating it alive!

Before they could even finish devouring the creature they had just subdued, another Space Beast began emerging through the Passage Gate...

At that point, the battalion of imps that had fought the first Space Beast began dragging its enormous body away toward an empty area, clearing the space around the Passage Gate, while another battalion from among those waiting nearby immediately stepped forward to intercept the newly arrived Space Beast.

"What... exactly... is happening over there?!" The question began appearing almost simultaneously among countless spectators who were still staring at the horrifying scene before them, unable to find any simple explanation for what they were witnessing.

That same question quickly began echoing everywhere, both inside people’s minds as they tried to understand the situation and openly from their mouths as they repeated it to those around them.

The scene unfolding over there looked less like some controlled operation and more like a decisive doomsday battle between the Crimson Plague and the Space Beasts, with one enormous creature after another emerging only to be confronted by entire battalions of those bloodthirsty beings!!

Then, finally, Billy raised his voice again while his gaze remained fixed on what was happening below, <Why don’t you show people what they should be seeing? Why are you keeping everything that’s happening here on Donara a secret?!>

"..Could it actually be that Robin Burton doesn’t know he’s being filmed right now?" someone wondered as the nature of Billy’s words and Robin’s behavior finally began drawing attention.

"Now that I think about it, his reactions have been strange throughout the entire broadcast..." another voice replied, as though several of the things they had previously overlooked were suddenly beginning to make more sense.

Above the Mountain—

"...Show people what’s happening on Donara?" Robin chuckled lightly at Billy’s suggestion, as though the very idea carried a problem Billy had failed to understand. "Eyes go blind and ears go deaf when the truth is difficult to accept. Only the mind can truly see and hear... Everyone had the chance to use their minds and see for themselves, but they all chose instead to trust what was familiar to them and fear what was new."

He then lowered his attention toward one of the books in his hands and began flipping through its pages as he continued, "I’m not talking here about the great figures who already know the truth and nevertheless chose to follow my enemies for the sake of their own interests. I’m talking about the small traders, the heedless rulers, and even ordinary citizens. Not one of them used their mind to truly look at what was happening... They chose the easiest path available to the human mind, the path of turning a blind eye and closing their minds, the path of blindly trusting the current authority without ever stopping to ask themselves one simple question... why?"

"You can’t judge ordinary citizens this harshly without first giving them something they can actually think about!!" Billy waved his hand forcefully in frustration and turned away from the cliff to face Robin directly. "You abandoned the entire field to your enemies, then afterward wondered why everyone sitting in the stands was watching only your enemies. Why didn’t you step onto the field as well, show yourself to everyone, and explain your own position so they would at least have something else to see and think about?!"

"I’m not a clown who would lower myself to the level of putting on a show and competing for attention with some petty person who decided to play a dirty game," Robin continued rapidly flipping through the pages in his hands, apparently unwilling to grant that kind of competition any importance, "nor am I so desperate for anything that I’d go before the people and ask everyone to believe me at someone else’s expense." Then he gently raised his head from the book and looked toward Billy. "I am Robin Burton. I don’t need to explain anything, and I don’t need anyone."

Then Robin extended his right hand toward the nearby table, picked up the heavy glass resting there, and calmly took a sip from the thick liquid inside it. "This glass of adult Space Beast blood, and those gifts in my hands from my children and loved ones, outweigh the entire universe and everything within it to me. Do you understand me?"

"I understand that you’re an arrogant bastard!" Billy immediately pointed toward him with a furious shout, his entire extended arm appearing clearly in the broadcast as it trembled with anger. "I’ve told you before, you’re destined to rule people with justice, to illuminate the universe with goodness and protect your subjects. How exactly are you supposed to do any of that while you stand aside and allow your enemies to control what goes on inside their heads?!"

"....." Robin slowly set the glass back down on the table, and the faint smile that had remained on his face throughout their exchange gradually began to disappear. "For the sake of your precious gift, let me tell you why I say that this entire matter is obvious to anyone who is actually willing to use their mind, and let me tell you why, after everything that has happened, I’ve lost hope in the human mentality and in democratic opinions..."

Gulp

Billy wasn’t the only one who swallowed at that moment; that same sound seemed to echo throughout every corner of the universe as countless people waited to hear what Robin would say next.
