Most of Kai’s worries about their current situation stemmed from a single, overwhelming question, what exactly were they inside of?If they truly were in the past, then every action they took could have consequences far beyond this moment. Even the smallest change might ripple outward, altering events in ways that could destroy the future they came from. But if this wasn’t the past, if it was something else entirely, then that raised a far more unsettling question.
What was the purpose of all this?
That uncertainty was what had pushed Kai to finally ask the question aloud.
Bliss, however, only smiled at him.
“A great deal of effort has gone into preparing the situation you currently find yourselves in,” she said calmly. “If I were to explain everything, what this place truly is, why you are here, and what purpose it serves, there is a chance the outcome itself would be weakened.”
She paused, her eyes glinting faintly.
“So for now, it is better that I keep that information to myself. I hope you can understand. For the sake of this trial that you have been put through.”
Kai clenched his teeth slightly. He didn’t like vague answers, especially when the stakes were this high, but he could tell from her tone that pushing further wouldn’t get him anywhere. Bliss wasn’t refusing out of arrogance, she genuinely believed that knowing more would make things worse, and with him wanting to keep things the way they were for said purpose he was inclined to go along with it all.
“…Fine,” Kai said after a moment, nodding. “I’ll leave it there, for now.”
Still, the frustration lingered.
“We needed to tell you the truth about where we’re from,” Kai continued, his voice steady, “because we’re facing serious problems of our own.”
Gary and Lupus stood quietly beside him as Kai spoke.
“In our time, the Alpha packs are already at war,” Kai explained. “And just like here, it’s because of Unzoku’s interference. We need a way to stop him, truly stop him, before his influence spreads any further.”
He hesitated briefly before continuing.
“The Unzoku we’re dealing with may be even stronger than the one you’re facing now. A lot of time has passed. His power has likely grown, and we don’t have access to the same methods you’re planning to use here. That’s why we need to know, is there a way to defeat him in our time? A different way from what you suggested?”
Lenny let out a slow breath.
“You’ve revealed a great deal to us,” he said. “If Unzoku is still causing destruction in your era, then it suggests that our current plan may have failed.”
“Not necessarily,” Bliss interrupted gently. “We don’t know that for certain. Time is complex, and many events could have unfolded in ways we cannot see. In the first place, as I said the seal would most likely break one day it was more of a question of when. The way I see it, if these people are standing in front of me right now wanting to solve the same problem then our plan most likely worked.”
She turned back to the three of them.
“We must focus on fulfilling our role here,” Bliss continued. “But as for your question… it is difficult. Still, I believe I can give you something useful.”
She raised her hand slightly.
“I am in the process of creating an item, one that can link an Alpha directly to Unzoku. Its purpose is not to attack him, but to sever his external influence over other werewolves.”
Kai’s eyes sharpened.
“When the item is complete,” Bliss said, “remember it. Look for it in your time. If it still exists, you may be able to use it as well.”
“There are conditions,” she added. “The device can only be used by an Alpha. The connection is too weak with any other rank. The Alpha must also possess extraordinary willpower. Even then, the one using it will be unable to fight while maintaining the link.”
“That’s why Steve is helping here,” Gary said quietly.
“Yes,” Bliss confirmed. “I will assist in suppressing Unzoku’s power and protecting Steve while he uses the item. However, it may be possible for an Alpha in your time to do the same alone, if their will is strong enough.”
“But there’s a risk,” she continued. “If their will falters, the device will fail. I act as insurance in this era.”
Gary frowned.
“Does that mean we need to find the two of you in our time?” he asked. “But… wouldn’t you be dead by then? Maybe we should look for your descendants instead?”
Both Bliss and Lenny chuckled softly.
“I cannot say whether we will still be alive,” Bliss replied. “But if we chose not to intervene during your era, there would have been a reason for it. Searching for us would likely be pointless.”
Kai rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
“What if two Alphas used the device together?” he asked. “Would that increase its effectiveness?”
“In theory, yes,” Bliss answered. “But then who would fight Unzoku?”
The question hung in the air.
In this era, there were only two Alphas.
But in Kai’s time…
There were three.
Lupus spoke next.
“There’s still another problem,” he said. “You’re not planning to kill Unzoku here. You’re sealing him. If we can’t find you in our time, is the seal itself another item we could use?”
Bliss shook her head.
“No. The seal is not an object. And I doubt there will be a way to replicate it in your era. It requires something that we may not be able to create again.”
She paused before continuing.
“However… that does not mean you have no options.”
The three leaned in slightly.
“You will not be able to seal Unzoku in your time,” Bliss said. “But there is something you can do instead.”
She met their gazes one by one.
“Fight him.”
“With the device, Unzoku will be unable to control or influence you. You will be able to face him at full strength. But unlike us… you must fight him to the end.”
“To kill him,” she said plainly.
Her voice softened slightly.
“I am afraid the task you face in the future will be far more difficult than the one we face here.”
