Chapter 1685 Unzoku's Last Stand (Part 2)

The seal that Lenny was activating was indiscriminate; it would target everyone and everything that was inside the designated area. The moment the signal was sent, it was a race against time. The two fighters needed to get out of the kill zone as quickly as possible, or they would be dragged into the abyss alongside the monster.

Both Jack and Bluebird reacted instantly, pushing off the ground with explosive force to jump back. The moment Jack landed on his feet at the edge of the boundary, he didn't just retreat; he ensured the trap would hold. He swung down his large hammer with a final, earth-shattering blow.

The impact channeled his Qi directly into the terrain. It created a large section of the ground to spiral upward, twisting and churning like a stone whirlpool. The earth rose up and surrounded where Unzoku was standing, clamping down on his legs. It might only keep a being of his power in place for half a second, but in a battle of this magnitude, half a second was all that was needed.

Right behind the combatants, Lenny’s hands started to glow with an intense, blinding brilliance. Simultaneously, the crystals embedded in the floor around the perimeter lit up in a chain reaction. The entire floor within the circle was now washed in a bright white light, transforming the solid rock into a gateway of pure energy.

Immediately, Unzoku could feel the shift. His body was being sucked in.

It almost felt like a black hole had opened up beneath his feet. The gravitational pull was immense, tearing at his physical form and dragging him downward into the white void. Unzoku was doing his best to try and fight back out, clawing at the empty air. The red mist energy was seeping out of his body in tendrils, trying to lash out and anchor him to the surrounding cavern walls, but the suction was too great. There was nothing to grab, nothing to hold onto, as the area of the white light was vast and the pull was absolute.

"ARGHH! What is this?!" Unzoku screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice distorted by the pressure.

He was perplexed at what was happening. He didn’t quite understand the nature of this magic, it was ancient and specific. However, through the haze of his confusion, he could only assume that it was successful because of one person in particular.

His eyes darted past the fighters to the woman standing in the back.

"That damned woman! Since she has been here, my influence over the others hasn’t worked!" Unzoku screamed, realizing his connection to the pack had been severed. "And Steve that’s with her... she hasn’t moved. Well then, if I am going down, I will just have to kill them right where they stand!"

Unzoku was sinking. His legs had already vanished into the glowing white floor, swallowed by the seal. However, his upper body was still free. He still had his hands. Swinging his arm through the air with malicious intent, he unleashed a massive projection of energy. A large claw strike ripped through the air, tearing up the bottom of the ground as it traveled, carving a path of destruction straight toward Bliss and Steve.

The attack was unexpected. Jack and Bluebird were still recovering from their retreat and were unable to move in time to intercept it. Lenny was at the back, focusing entirely on maintaining the seal.

Although Bliss was ready to fend off more of the red miasma or mental attacks, she wasn’t going to be able to do much about a physical strike of this magnitude, and she knew it. In the room, there were only three others, Gary, Kai, and Lupus, who might have been able to try and intercept the attack.

However, in their minds, all of them had come to the same conclusion as Kai had done earlier. They stood still, their weapons lowered. This wasn’t meant to be something they were to get involved in. No matter how much they wanted to help, no matter how hard it was to watch, this was a battle of fate that they needed to see play out between the specific parties involved.

In that split second, Bliss made her choice. She broke her concentration on the barrier and pulled the medallion violently out from Steve’s body.

The moment the metal left his flesh, Steve was freely able to move again. His instincts took over and he leapt to the side.. The claw attack continued going, breaking apart the stone where they had just been standing, but it managed to hit nothing in the end as the two avoided the fatal blow by a hair's breadth.

It wasn't over yet. Unzoku looked ready to throw out more claw strikes in their direction with all of his last might, desperate to take someone with him.

Seeing this, Jack roared. He wouldn't let the monster attack his brother again. Jack hurled his large great sword, a weapon he had seized during the chaos, with all of his remaining energy and built-up Qi directly towards Unzoku.

The blade flew true. It penetrated part of Unzoku's chest, hitting him on the side with a sickening crunch. The weapon was lodged deep in there. It wasn’t enough to kill a being like him instantly, but it clearly had hurt him quite a bit, breaking his focus.

Unzoku's body continued to sink down, the white light now swallowing him up to his waist, then his chest.

"You… you fools… all of you! You have made an enemy out of the worst person today!" Unzoku shouted, his voice echoing with venom.

Suddenly, the dynamic changed. The red mist that had been flailing around the cavern started to retract. Instead of trying to anchor him, it started to head back towards Unzoku, rushing into him like a vacuum.

As it absorbed back into his form, his eyes started to glow a piercing, vibrant red as he looked at all of them.

"Hahaha! I can feel it! I can feel it, my powers... they are back!" Unzoku laughed maniacally.

Because he was now isolated in the seal, cut off from the external world, the power he had lent out or spread thin was returning to its source. Unzoku then pointed his arms out, palms open, directed right at Steve as well as Jack.

"You two think that you have won? That you will be able to live peaceful lives after this, just because I will be gone?" Unzoku screamed, his voice vibrating with a dark, curse-laden frequency. "There is not a chance that I will ever allow that to happen!"

A strange, foreign energy started to be felt within both Jack and Steve’s bodies instantly. It wasn't an attack of force, but of essence. A tingling sensation ran from their toes right to the strands on all of their hairs. The energy was flowing into them, binding to their very DNA.

Bliss, watching from the side with the medallion in her hand, realized what was happening. Her eyes went wide with horror.

"Damn it!" Bliss thought as she went to rush forward, hoping to join back with Steve to offer magical protection.

But she was too slow.

"I will curse you, and all the future generations, to live a life of pure misery!" Unzoku bellowed.

Almost like a pulse, a shockwave of dark action went out of Unzoku’s hands. It connected. Both Steve and Jack were lifted off their feet by the invisible force and blasted backward, hitting the cavern wall with a bone-jarring thud.

Bliss arrived a second too late. At the same time, the white light flared one last time. Unzoku’s body had disappeared completely into the floor, leaving the cavern silent, save for the heavy breathing of the victors.

Both of the Alphas slid down the wall, left with lingering pain and heavy questions as to what exactly had just happened to them.

****not too busy, I tend to reply.
