Kai stood in the center of the cavern, his chest heaving as the adrenaline of the battle began to end, replaced by a crushing sense of devastation. The scene before him was a nightmare. While a large portion of Steve’s pack remained bound and shackled against the stone walls, a small mercy he was deeply thankful for, many of the areas were empty. He had been so hyper-focused on his life-or-death struggle with Steve that he had allowed the unthinkable to happen: the others had escaped.Despite the urgency screaming in his veins, Kai knew he couldn't simply leave Steve unconscious on the cold floor. If the alpha woke up unhindered, the slaughter would only intensify. Thankfully, they had anticipated a scenario where they might need to secure a high-ranking werewolf. Kai spotted a pile of heavy, spare iron chains that had been set aside for this situation, and he moved with frantic efficiency.
He hauled Steve’s limp body toward the wall, binding his wrists, ankles, and neck. Not trusting the strength of a single link against a werewolf of Steve’s caliber, Kai went further, wrapping a second set of chains around the man's limbs until he was a cocoon of heavy iron.
‘This should hold him,’ Kai thought, tightening the last bolt. ‘Even if he regains consciousness, he won’t have the energy to break these. If he pushes his transformation too far without food, his body will eventually give out and revert to his human form.’
He glanced at the other captives in the room, those who hadn't transformed or escaped yet. It was a massive gamble leaving a monster like Steve in the same room as them, even chained. If Steve somehow managed to snap those links, the people trapped here would be nothing more than a snack.
‘This is why Lupus was supposed to be rotating between the caverns to support me,’ Kai cursed inwardly, his frustration boiling over. ‘I ended up with the short end of the stick, trying to manage this insanity solo. I was overconfident. I thought with my speed, I could suppress Steve and guard the exit at the same time. I was wrong.’
Just as he finished securing the area and prepared to sprint for the surface, his sensitive wolf ears twitched. A sound filtered down from the tunnels above, chilling his blood.
“AHHH!”
It wasn't just a single cry. A chorus of screams erupted from the city above, the sound of pure, unadulterated chaos unfolding in the streets. Without wasting another second, Kai pivoted and bolted. He blurred through the broken iron doors and leaped up the stone staircase, his claws clicking against the rock.
Emerging into the city in his full wolf form, Kai was met with a scene of carnage. The knights of the city had already deployed, their silvered armor gleaming under the moonlight as they engaged the escaped werewolves in desperate hand-to-hand combat.
Bodies lay scattered on the cobblestones, some were knights who had fallen in the initial surge. Fortunately, it appeared the general public had been largely spared so far; the knights had been on high alert, and their quick response had kept the beasts from reaching the crowds.
Ahead, Kai saw a knight buckling under the weight of a massive werewolf. The beast's claws were inches from the man's throat. Kai launched himself from a nearby rooftop, his powerful jaws snapping shut around the werewolf’s neck. With a savage twist of his neck, he tore away a massive chunk of flesh and fur. As Kai leaped away to the next target, the saved knight didn't hesitate, swinging his blade to decapitate the stunned creature.
‘I’m sorry,’ Kai thought, a pang of guilt hitting him as he looked at the fallen members of the pack he had once hoped to save. ‘I wanted to rescue you all... but I have to prioritize the survival of the city now.’
The battlefield was shifting. Kai tore across the plaza, using his superior agility to intercept the Werewolves. He skidded across the stone to dodge a swipe, then lunged upward, planting his massive paws into the chest of a werewolf and hurling it away from a group of cowering civilians.
“The giant wolf! It’s on our side! It’s a friendly!” one of the knights bellowed, rallying his men.
The presence of a powerful ally gave the knights a second wind. While Kai had struggled with the confined space of the cavern, the open city streets allowed him to utilize his full speed. He became a guardian shadow, darting between the knights and ensuring no one was flanked.
However, a new problem arose. Unlike the cavern, which had limited exits, the city was an open map. Several werewolves had begun to use their claws to scale the buildings, bypass the knight's front lines, and head straight for the town square where the terrified citizens were gathered near the great bonfire.
One werewolf leaped from a balcony, soaring over the heads of the guard, its maw open and ready to feast, until a flash of steel bisected it in mid-air. The two halves of the beast thudded harmlessly into the dirt.
“Everyone, stay in the center! Do not move!” Bluebird shouted, his sword coated in dark blood. He stood at the heart of the formation, his eyes scanning the rooftops. “The knights will protect you! Do not break the formation, or you will be picked off!”
Bluebird knew that as long as the people stayed clustered, his men could form a wall of steel around them. He looked up, catching a glimpse of the massive wolf that was Kai tearing through the stragglers on the perimeter.
‘With him here... the people might actually make it,’ Bluebird thought, a grim hope rising in his chest. ‘As long as Gary and Lupus are having the same luck with the other pack, we might just survive the night.’
