Chapter 1707 The Evolution of the Pack

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The impact was unlike anything Gary or Lupus had ever felt before. The newly created Volcanic Fist hit Jack with a massive amount of power, but it wasn’t alone. It combined perfectly with Lupus’s massive reserve of Qi and his own transformed strength. The two Alphas had thrown their strikes in perfect synchronization, and the resulting level of power was a first for both of them. As their fists dug deep into Jack’s torso, the sound that followed wasn't just a thud, it was the sound of a sound barrier breaking.

The strikes pierced through whatever defensive Qi layer Jack had left. The moment the impact was made, a large, visible ring of power exploded outward in all directions, blowing back the dust and loose stone in the cavern.

Jack was sent flying through the air like a cannonball, his body moving so fast he was a blur before he slammed into the far cavern wall for the second time.

This time, the damage to the environment was far more severe. Jack’s body didn't just dent the rock; he broke deep into the stone, creating a crater that looked like an impact site. Large, jagged cracks, veins of broken earth, rippled out from the point of impact, spreading across the floor, racing up the walls, and spider-webbing across the ceiling.

For several terrifying seconds, it truly felt like the whole place was going to come down on top of them. The groaning of the mountain was deafening, but as the tremors eventually subsided and the dust began to settle, the cavern remained standing strong.

“I was actually worried the whole place was going to fall down for a moment,” Lupus commented, his voice slightly strained as he tried to catch his breath. He was staring at the destruction they had just caused.

“What about Jack?” Gary asked, his eyes fixed on the crater. “You don’t think we hit him so hard that it ended up killing him, do you? That was... a lot of power.”

Gary didn't wait for an answer. He quickly rushed toward the wall to check on the fallen hero. Lupus stayed on standby just a few steps back, keeping his guard up just in case he was needed for a round two.

While he watched Gary, Lupus was continuously moving his fingers and flexing his hand. The feeling of that final punch was still vibrating through his arm, and he wanted to memorize the sensation and the flow of Qi for the future. He knew he had just touched a new level of strength.

Eventually, Gary reached the rubble and saw where Jack was buried. To his relief, the man was no longer in his monstrous Werewolf form. The transformation had been forced out of him by the sheer trauma of the hit.

Rushing into the dust, Gary started to pull Jack out of the rock. He dragged him over to a flatter area and laid him down on the ground, immediately leaning in to check for a pulse. He wanted to make sure the legendary figure was still breathing and still alive.

Thankfully, after a few tense seconds, he felt the steady, if weak, thumping of a heart. The good news was that although Jack had been badly hurt and was completely unconscious, his life didn't seem to be in critical condition.

The two of them didn't know the full details at the time, but the reason Jack had been able to transform despite his hunger was because he was using his Qi, his very life energy, to fuel his body. He had already used up all of his standard energy reserves, which was why he hadn't been transformed when the full moon first appeared.

The hard knock and the small break in his focus caused by the double strike was enough to snap his concentration, causing his Qi to fluctuate and revert his body back to its human state.

Both Lupus and Gary then got to work immediately. They couldn't take any chances with a man as dangerous as Jack. They used the spare heavy chains that were hanging around the cavern walls and tied him up securely. They then moved to the other werewolves who had been knocked out during the chaos, ensuring they were all restrained as well.

It became a repetitive process. As soon as one of the werewolves would start to wake up, Lupus would step over and give them a hard slap across the face. He wasn't just being mean; he was giving their bodies something minor to heal, trying to draw the remaining energy out of them so they couldn't transform. Even if that didn't work, a hard slap from Lupus with Qi focused in the right place was practically enough to knock them back out for another hour.

Since the werewolves weren't all waking up at the exact same time, the two of them were able to manage the situation and keep everyone subdued. It finally felt like things were safe and the situation had settled down in their area.

Gary decided he needed to check on the rest of his team. He told Lupus to stay put while he headed to the other cavern where Kai was, just to see if everything was okay on that side.

As Gary made his way through the tunnels, he started to reflect on his battle with Jack. He couldn't help but notice that there were things that seemed very different between the werewolves of the past and the werewolves of his own time. Although Gary had seen some pack members in the past have skills related to the classes they held, he hadn't seen them as clearly or as defined as he had done during his time with his own pack.

He was curious about what could have happened over the years. Most of the werewolves of the past that he had encountered seemed to be just that, werewolves. They relied on raw strength, speed, and standard transformations.

A large benefit Gary had in his fight wasn't just his Ash form or his unique skills, but the Class system that he possessed. His class allowed him more energy and a much higher health pool than a standard werewolf, giving him the durability to survive Jack’s onslaught. In this era, there didn't seem to be set classes yet.

Gary had talked about this with Kai and the others before because they had made similar observations throughout their journey. Together, they had come to a conclusion: werewolves had continued to evolve. As the generations passed, werewolves gained more powers, and as mutations and changes happened within different packs, individuals began to grow stronger down different, specialized paths.

Those individuals would then train specifically down those paths, and their bodies would adapt more to those ways over time, eventually leading to the distinct classes Gary knew. In a way, the werewolves of Gary’s time had a massive advantage because of these specialized classes, which simply didn't exist in the past.

If Jack had been a powerful Paladin or a Warrior type with the extra class benefits Gary enjoyed, things would have gone very differently. The same could have been said if Jack had been equipped with beast gear and enchanted items, or most importantly, if he had been sound of mind and fighting with his full tactical intelligence.

‘I had so many advantages in that fight,’ Gary admitted to himself as he walked. ‘The result was good, and we survived, but I have to remember that. I need to take everything I’ve learned here and keep growing.’

With those thoughts in his head, Gary stepped into the next cavern.
