Xin had allowed Marcus to stay the night at the manor before they were going to make a move. As soon as he was shown to one of the rooms upstairs and the door was closed behind him, the sound of heavy breathing could be heard not long after. It didn’t take long before it was clear he had already fallen asleep.“Man, how can a guy just sleep like that in a house he’s never been in before?” Innu said quietly. “Whenever I sleep somewhere new it always takes me a while, and it’s not exactly like we’re friends. We could be attacking him right now if we wanted to.”
“I heard he got into a scuffle with Crawley,” Marie added. “If what he said is true, he’s been fighting non-stop, on the run, and then fought us when he arrived. He must be completely exhausted.”
There was a pause after that. If there was one thing they couldn’t deny, it was that Marcus was strong. That much had been proven already. Because of that, it was far better to have him as an ally rather than an enemy.
Still, that was also part of the problem.
Some of them couldn’t help but think that having Marcus as an ally might only bring them more enemies than they already had. Trouble seemed to follow him, and now that trouble was standing right in the middle of the Howlers’ base.
“Are you sure we should be moving so soon?” Austin asked. “And splitting everyone into two groups while the others are still missing? What if a situation happens and we don’t have enough people to respond?”
“There are more than just us who are strong in the Howlers now,” Xin replied. “Besides, the three of them have been gone for a while.”
She looked around the room.
“We can’t just wait for them to come back. If we do nothing and act like they aren’t here, then our enemies might realise that’s the truth. We need to act like the three of them are still here.”
Xin continued, her tone firm.
“I have no doubt that if either group after us, Unzoku or the vampires, knew those three were missing, they would try something. The fact that they haven’t yet must mean they’re still evaluating the situation, or building up their strength.”
The next day, the group that was travelling with Marcus had to force him awake. He had been sleeping far longer than any of them expected, so deeply that even knocking on the door hadn’t worked at first.
When he finally got up, everything was already prepared. Marcus was given a fresh set of clothes, black and gold in colour, made to better fit the Howlers’ theme. After that, they all got into a vehicle and began their journey, following Marcus’s directions.
He was leading them to the closest Dark Guild base near Slough.
Marcus was glad that this was the plan. He wanted to know the state of the Dark Guild in other areas as well. There had to be at least one survivor somewhere. The idea that every single member had been wiped out didn’t sit right with him.
“In order for us to work together,” Xin said as they continued to travel in the back of the vehicle, “we need to know why you think the vampires attacked you.”
“I can think of two reasons,” Marcus replied. “The vampires have secret control over many things, and in a way, the Dark Guild represented that as well.”
He went on.
“We had information everywhere. Altered and non-Altered. We knew what people were doing, where they were going, and who they were connected to. The vampires want that kind of influence.”
Marcus clenched his fist slightly.
“If another group had that level of control and couldn’t work with them, then it was better to erase it.”
“They also most likely knew about my connection to Lupus,” Marcus continued. “Over the years, we provided Lupus with weapons. There were our own reasons for doing this, but the issue was resolved without our intervention and actually thanks to Gary.
“Still, Werewolves and vampires have had constant clashes, and with the weapons we gave them vampires were killed, and you should already know that Luzen is one of them.”
Luzen had almost no reaction as the others in the car had turned to him. They were unaware of his infamousness among the vampires. If they did know, then Xin probably wouldn't have taken him for this mission.
“Our weapons increased the Lupus Pack’s power,” Marcus said. “Some deaths were caused by them. Maybe the vampires thought we were working closely with Lupus, and decided it was best to remove us.”
He let out a slow breath.
“It could even be a combination of both reasons. Lupus warned me they would act. I just never thought we would put up so little of a fight.”
The vampires were certainly mysterious, but Xin couldn’t ignore the logic in Marcus’s explanation. Helping him could bring danger, but if the vampires were planning to clash with the Werewolves regardless, then Marcus might be necessary.
“We’re here,” Marcus said.
They all stepped out of the vehicle together.
“Are you sure this is the right place?” Olivia asked. “You had a base here?”
What stood in front of them was a dam. There was no one in sight, and nothing about it suggested it was connected to the Dark Guild at all.
“It’s definitely the right place,” Luzen said as he pulled the bow from behind his back and held it firmly in his hands.
“I can smell blood.”
