A week before Gary and the others had returned from being missing, Midwak had spent time in Centrefield. He had been carrying out his task as asked, going around the city and stopping trouble, and while doing so, he was wearing the colors of black and gold, the colors of the Howlers.
It spread rather quickly that the Howlers were now the ones protecting the area, but that still didn’t stop some gangs from trying to start things up.
Thankfully, Midwak wasn’t alone in his task. He had the strike force, a group of around one hundred and fifty werewolves.
They weren’t weak either. Gary had been using his pawn points to upgrade their grades through his system.
Although that didn’t directly increase their strength, it worked as a kind of soft cap push on their potential, so their progress in growing stronger had been rather quick. Even Midwak had started taking them under his wing.
They were taking on his fighting style, his sharp decisions, and even his demeanor. Currently, he was walking down the middle of a street with a group of around six walking behind him, strutting as if nothing could stop them or get in their way.
As they moved through the streets, the people who saw them gave polite bows. Midwak and the others didn’t even acknowledge them.
The people were grateful for Midwak. He made the city a better place, and with how loud he had been about protecting it, everyone knew it.
“Midwak, are we going to stay in Centrefield much longer, or are we going to be heading back to Slough?” Kiru asked. He was one of the werewolves in the strike force who had shown great potential.
“Those b*stards haven’t even checked up on us, and some of them think they can order me around?” Midwak said. “The only one I promised to listen to was that damned green hair, and no one even knows where he is.”
Midwak had stopped caring about the Alpha position and had fully decided to help Gary. After Gary had granted him a few favors, and stayed true to his word, Midwak had kept his own promise. That was why he had even come to this city in the first place.
“Ah, it’s more that it’s just kind of nice here,” Kiru continued. “With us around, maybe we should start looking at a base, or some apartments or something. Maybe I can even look for a girlfriend.”
“Hey!” Midwak said as he turned around sharply. “Relationships ruin lives… remember that.”
Then Midwak continued walking.
The group followed, but something suddenly caught Midwak’s nose. He stopped.
“Make sure no one enters that butcher shop,” Midwak said.
He headed toward it without hesitation. When he entered through the front, the others quickly stood guard outside. Midwak took a few deeper sniffs. The door had been unlocked, but there were no staff members inside.
The shop wasn’t big by any means. He walked forward and peeked over the counter. There it was. A dead body. Most of its flesh had been eaten.
Midwak jumped over the counter and landed lightly on his feet. He could see blood leading toward a back door. He followed the trail and ventured further inside.
“What the, ?” were the first words to come out of his mouth. “What is this? I can smell you. Why the hell do you smell like one of me?”
He stepped into a freezing room filled with large hanging meats placed around in different areas.
“I asked you a damn question, and it’s polite to answer!” Midwak shouted.
He threw a fist and hit one of the large chunks of meat hanging from a hook. It swung hard and flew off its hook, slamming into something hidden in the shadows. Whatever it hit quickly threw the piece of meat aside and leapt straight toward Midwak.
Midwak saw it clearly now.
It looked like a werewolf, but it had distinctive features that were clearly different from his own kind. It swiped at his head with sharp claws. Midwak reacted instantly, diving down and rolling along the ground underneath it.
As soon as he was behind the creature, he grabbed it from behind and, with one hand, slammed it straight into the floor. The entire room shook from the impact.
With his other hand, he flicked several hardened nails into one of its arms, piercing it into the ground and causing it to shriek in pain.
“I’ve never seen an uglier werewolf before,” Midwak said coldly. “Is that why you’re so frustrated and acting out like this?”
Regardless of the nails pinning it down, the creature lifted its arm, ripping through the wounds as it broke free. It slashed toward Midwak again.
It crashed into his side, piercing his skin and digging its claws in.
“Oh, you bitch!” Midwak growled.
He grabbed both of its arms and yanked it away from his body, tearing its claws out of his flesh before pulling the werewolf forward.
Then, with the power of his legs, he exploded forward, slamming into it as they tumbled into a brutal struggle. Midwak drove his fist into its face.
They hit the ground hard. He didn’t stop. He pounded the beast relentlessly with his fists.
With almost every hit, it felt as though his strength was increasing. He could feel the bones of the creature cracking beneath his blows.
Until eventually, The beast was clearly dead. Its head had been completely crushed, fused into the floor beneath it.
Midwak let out a slow breath.
“Sh*t. I should have asked it some questions,” he muttered. “I’m not the best person for this kind of thing.”
He stood up and looked down at the broken body. A thought crossed his mind.
“Should I… eat this thing?”
