Chapter 140 The Weight of Strategy, Shikamaru's Journey: Part 3: Shadows Beneath the Surface

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The journey back to the Hidden Leaf was tense, marked by the silence of a team that knew things were about to get more complicated. Shikamaru led the way, his mind working through possibilities. The camp they’d found was unsettling in its simplicity. No significant clues, no obvious affiliation. Whoever these people were, they knew how to cover their tracks.

As they crossed the last stretch of the forest, the village gates appeared in the distance, and with them, a sense of urgency. Shikamaru glanced back at his team. Ino was still deep in thought, likely replaying whatever she’d seen in her Mind Transfer Jutsu, while Choji kept his eyes forward, scanning the surroundings out of habit. They were just as uneasy as he was.

“We need to see Naruto immediately,” Shikamaru said as they approached the gates. “This can’t wait.”

They slipped into the village without fanfare, moving through the bustling streets unnoticed. The Hidden Leaf had grown more populous in recent years, with reconstruction and peace drawing in people from all over. But with that growth came new vulnerabilities, and Shikamaru could feel them everywhere now.

When they finally reached the Hokage’s office, Naruto was already waiting, sitting at his desk with an air of impatience that didn’t quite match his usual laid-back demeanor. Sakura was standing beside him, her arms crossed, while Sai leaned casually against the wall, expression unreadable. It seemed the news had already reached Naruto that something was off.

Shikamaru didn’t waste time. “Naruto, we found a camp near the border. Small, but organized. Whoever they are, they’re moving between the Land of Fire and the Land of Wind.”

Naruto’s brow furrowed. “Did you figure out who they’re working for?”

Ino stepped forward. “I tried using my jutsu on the traces left behind. I couldn’t get a clear answer, but they’re definitely after someone powerful. The group’s well-organized and well-funded.”

Naruto leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. “Someone powerful, huh? That narrows it down, but not enough. Do we have any other intel?”

Shikamaru shook his head. “Just tracks leading south. They’re being careful—too careful. They didn’t leave much behind.”

Naruto exchanged a glance with Sakura, who had been silently listening. “We’ve heard some rumors coming from the Land of Wind about rogue groups moving through the desert. But we haven’t been able to confirm anything. This could be connected.”

Shikamaru’s mind raced. The Land of Wind had always been a place of instability, with its harsh environment and political tensions. If there was movement there, it could destabilize the already fragile peace between the nations.

Sai, who had remained quiet until now, finally spoke up. “If they’re targeting someone powerful, we should consider the possibility that it’s someone outside the main villages. There are still missing-nin, rogue shinobi, and independent clans out there.”

Sakura nodded. “True. And we’ve had peace for long enough that some of them might have slipped under the radar. But why make a move now? What’s changed?”

Shikamaru thought for a moment, the gears in his mind turning. “That’s what we need to figure out. If this group is looking for someone, it means they have a purpose. And that purpose could shift the balance of power. We need to find out who they’re after and why.”

Naruto stood up, his face serious. “I’ll send word to Gaara. If this group is moving between our lands, we need to coordinate with the Sand Village. We can’t let this escalate into something bigger.”

Before Shikamaru could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the room. Without waiting for permission, a young Chunin rushed in, looking flustered.

“Hokage-sama, urgent news from the Land of Wind! Gaara has sent a message—they’ve spotted a group of unidentified shinobi near their borders, moving toward the Land of Fire. He’s requesting assistance.”

Naruto’s expression darkened. “Looks like things are moving faster than we thought.”

Shikamaru sighed inwardly. It seemed the situation was spiraling faster than even he had predicted. “Naruto, we need to act now. If Gaara’s already seen them near his borders, it means they’re moving with purpose. We can’t wait for them to strike first.”

Naruto nodded, already in action mode. “I’m going to assemble a task force. Shikamaru, I want you to lead it. Take whoever you need, and get to the bottom of this. But remember—this is recon first. We don’t engage unless absolutely necessary.”

Shikamaru hated being the one to lead. He’d much rather work in the background, but he knew there wasn’t time to protest. “Got it.”

As he turned to leave, Ino and Choji followed, but Naruto called out again. “Shikamaru, one more thing.”

Shikamaru stopped, turning back. “Yeah?”

Naruto’s face was uncharacteristically serious. “Be careful. If they’re targeting someone powerful, it might not just be about territory or resources. There could be something bigger at play here. We can’t afford to let things get out of hand.”

Shikamaru nodded, understanding the weight of those words. He wasn’t just dealing with a simple rogue group. This could be the spark that ignited a much larger conflict.

The task force was assembled within the hour. Shikamaru chose a team that balanced strength and intelligence, bringing along not only Ino and Choji but also two of the village’s best sensory ninja, Hinata Hyuga and Kiba Inuzuka. With Kiba’s tracking skills and Hinata’s Byakugan, they’d have the advantage of seeing things before the enemy did.

As they set out from the village, Shikamaru filled the team in on what they knew. “We’re heading to the border near the Land of Wind. Gaara’s already spotted them, so we need to be fast. Our job is to figure out who they are, what they want, and whether they pose an immediate threat.”

Kiba grinned, his confidence always a little too high for Shikamaru’s taste. “Easy enough. We’ll sniff them out in no time.”

Hinata, more composed, nodded quietly. “I’ll keep my Byakugan active as we approach. We’ll know if anyone is nearby.”

Shikamaru appreciated their confidence, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was far from a straightforward mission. As they traveled, his mind worked through different scenarios, always looking for the strategy behind the movements. Whoever this group was, they weren’t amateurs. They were playing a long game, and Shikamaru needed to figure out the rules before it was too late.

The landscape shifted as they neared the border. The lush forests of the Land of Fire gave way to the arid plains that marked the boundary with the Land of Wind. The wind picked up, swirling dust into the air, and the tension in the group grew palpable.

“Hold up,” Kiba said suddenly, his nose twitching. “I’ve got a scent.”

Shikamaru’s pulse quickened. “How many?”

Kiba crouched, sniffing the air. “At least four, maybe five. They’re close. Moving east, fast.”

Shikamaru’s mind clicked into gear. “Hinata, do you see anything?”

Hinata activated her Byakugan, her eyes scanning the horizon. After a few tense seconds, she nodded. “I see them. Five figures, moving through the rocks ahead. They’re heavily armed, but I can’t make out any headbands or symbols.”

Shikamaru’s suspicions were confirmed. This was no ordinary group of shinobi. “We need to intercept them, but stay hidden. We can’t let them know we’re here yet.”

The team moved into position, taking cover among the rocks. As Shikamaru crouched behind an outcrop, his mind raced through the possibilities. Whoever these shinobi were, they had a clear destination. The question was, where were they going, and who were they after?

And more importantly—why?
