Chapter 148 The Path of Dusk, Obito Uchiha's Redemption: 1 A Burden Unveiled

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The world had changed. Obito Uchiha stood on the edge of a high cliff overlooking the ruins of what once was the battlefield of the Fourth Great Ninja War. The wind howled around him, carrying the distant echoes of battles fought, friendships lost, and the pain of his own dark past. The once mighty shinobi world was rebuilding, but the scars remained—both in the land and in Obito’s heart.

He pulled his cloak tighter around his body, the familiar weight of it a reminder of who he had become. He was no longer the ruthless villain who had sought to plunge the world into eternal illusion. No longer Madara’s pawn, nor the manipulator behind the Akatsuki. He had chosen the harder path—one of redemption. Yet the ghosts of his past followed him everywhere, whispering of his failures and betrayals.

Obito’s single remaining Sharingan gleamed in the fading light as he stared down at the landscape, his mind drifting back to the days when he had walked the path of darkness. The faces of Rin and Kakashi flashed before him—haunting him, as they always did. Rin’s death had broken something deep inside him, twisting his sense of justice and pushing him into the clutches of Madara Uchiha. But even now, after everything that had happened, Rin’s memory was the only light left in his heart.

“Do you think this is enough?” a voice interrupted his thoughts.

Obito turned to see Kakashi Hatake standing a few paces behind him, his face partially obscured by his usual mask. The two men had shared a turbulent history—once comrades, then enemies, and finally, reluctant allies in the fight to save the world.

Kakashi’s lone visible eye watched Obito carefully, as if gauging his former friend’s state of mind. He had seen Obito rise from the depths of villainy, only to fight against the very darkness he had once embraced. But despite everything, Kakashi knew Obito’s journey wasn’t over.

“What do you mean?” Obito asked quietly, his voice calm but heavy with the weight of years.

Kakashi stepped closer, crossing his arms. “You’ve been wandering the world ever since the war ended, trying to find some kind of peace. But are you really finding it? Or are you just running away from what you’ve done?”

Obito sighed. He knew Kakashi wasn’t trying to antagonize him. In fact, Kakashi had been one of the few who had truly understood his pain, even after all the betrayal. But Kakashi’s question cut deeper than Obito was ready to admit.

“I’m not running,” Obito said after a long pause. “I just… I need to understand where it all went wrong. And maybe… maybe find a way to make it right.”

Kakashi nodded, his expression softening. “You’ve already started down that road. You’ve saved lives, Obito. You sacrificed yourself to stop Kaguya, to save Naruto and the others. But at some point, you have to stop looking back.”

Obito turned away from Kakashi, his gaze once more on the horizon. “It’s not that easy. You weren’t the one who tore the world apart. You weren’t the one who caused so much death and suffering.”

Kakashi sighed. “No, but I’ve made my share of mistakes too. We all have. The difference is, we’re still here. And we’re still trying to make things better. That’s all anyone can ask for.”

For a moment, silence fell between them. The wind continued to blow, rustling the trees far below, while the sun dipped lower, casting the landscape in hues of gold and red.

“You’re not the only one haunted by the past, Obito,” Kakashi said softly. “But the past doesn’t define you. It’s what you do now that matters.”

Obito didn’t respond right away. His thoughts drifted to the people he had lost—Rin, Nagato, Konan, even Madara. All of them had been caught in the same web of pain and vengeance. All of them had believed, at one point or another, that they were doing the right thing.

“I thought I could change the world,” Obito finally whispered, his voice laced with regret. “I thought I could fix everything. But all I did was make it worse.”

Kakashi took a step closer, placing a hand on Obito’s shoulder. “You tried to force the world into your vision. But the world doesn’t need to be controlled—it needs to be understood. And that’s what you’re doing now.”

Obito closed his eyes, letting the weight of Kakashi’s words sink in. He had spent so long chasing after an impossible dream, one that had been tainted by loss and anger. But now, standing here on the edge of the cliff, with Kakashi by his side, he felt something he hadn’t in a long time—hope.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to make up for what I did,” Obito said quietly. “But I’ll try. I owe it to everyone I hurt. To everyone I lost.”

Kakashi nodded. “That’s all any of us can do.”

Just then, the two shinobi were interrupted by a distant sound—a sharp, piercing cry that echoed through the air. Obito’s senses went on high alert as he scanned the horizon, his Sharingan activating instinctively.

“What was that?” Kakashi asked, his hand already moving toward the kunai pouch on his hip.

Obito frowned. “It came from the village.”

Without another word, both men leaped into action, racing toward the source of the sound. As they moved swiftly through the trees, Obito’s mind raced. The world was supposed to be at peace, yet something was stirring, something dark and familiar. He couldn’t shake the feeling that this was no ordinary threat.

Within minutes, they arrived at the edge of a small, secluded village nestled in a valley between two mountains. Smoke billowed from several buildings, and the villagers were fleeing in all directions. At the center of the chaos stood a lone figure, cloaked in black, their face hidden by a mask. They exuded a menacing aura, and Obito’s stomach churned with recognition.

Kakashi tensed beside him. “Who is that?”

Obito’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t know. But I can feel it… they’re using the same kind of chakra that Madara did.”

The figure turned to face them, their eyes gleaming with malevolent intent. “So, the infamous Obito Uchiha finally shows himself. I’ve been waiting for you.”

Obito’s heart skipped a beat. He didn’t know who this person was, but their presence sent a chill down his spine. Whoever they were, they had come for him. And judging by the dark energy radiating from them, they were prepared to drag him back into the shadows of his past.
