Just when everyone thought things would continue peacefully-A letter arrived.
It came directly from the imperial palace of the Falling Star Empire. It carried the personal seal of Princess-no, Empress-Sun Yaoqing.
The recipient was obviously Bai Zihan.
Bai Zihan was surprised and excited by that, thinking perhaps the Princess had gotten hold of the Mysterious Organization or Chong Sheng.
Bai Zihan read through the contents.
"Heh, looks like you have finally decided to show yourself, Chong Sheng!"
***
Months passed since the incident where Chong Sheng revealed himself as a Demonic Cultivator and escaped.
For most people within the Falling Star Empire, the incident at the Quan Clan gradually faded into memory.
The Quan Clan sent out search parties to find him and kill him.
Quan Lingshu felt that he would only regain his face after taking care of the bastard who had sullied his clan's name.
Yet no trace of Chong Sheng was ever found.
Some began to believe he had already fled the empire.
Others claimed he must have died from his injuries shortly after escaping.
The Quan Clan themselves wanted to believe that.
But deep down, many members of the Quan Clan still remembered the hatred burning in Chong Sheng's eyes.
And the promise he left behind.
Though many months had passed, many eventually forgot about it and went on living their lives as before.
Then it happened on a quiet night.
It was after the Desolate Heaven Empire had won against the high-level beast tide.
The Falling Star Empire was on high alert since demonic beasts were also rampaging on their side, though not to the same degree as in the Desolate Heaven Empire.
But many were still cautious, especially before the victory of the Desolate Heaven Empire.
Because if the Desolate Heaven Empire had fallen, then their empire might have been next.
Fortunately, their worries turned out to be unnecessary.
Many clans were at ease again, including the Quan Clan, thinking the disaster had passed.
The moon hung high above the Quan Clan compound, bathing the buildings in pale silver light.
Most of the clan had already retired for the night.
Quan Lingshu, however, wasn't sleeping yet.
Inside his study hall, several jade lamps burned quietly, illuminating the stacks of reports piled across his desk.
His expression was dark as he flipped through the financial documents.
"...Damn it!"
With a furious shout, he slammed the jade slip down.
"If not for that bastard Bai Zihan...!"
His chest rose and fell with anger.
The Quan Clan had once been thriving.
Through secret dealings with the Mysterious Organization, they had received an enormous amount of resources.
In exchange, all they had to do was help hide the organization's base within their territory and ensure no information leaked.
It was an easy arrangement.
More importantly-
The Second Prince himself had been behind them.
With royal backing, the Quan Clan had practically been untouchable within the Falling Star Empire.
Quan Lingshu had believed his future was already set.
Once the Second Prince ascended the throne, the Quan Clan's influence would
skyrocket. And he, Quan Lingshu, would rise alongside him.
He would have been below one person and above thousands.
A High Noble of the empire.
Only the royal family would stand above him.
But all of that...
Had collapsed because of a single person.
"Bai Zihan!"
He spat the name with hatred.
Ever since that young master arrived in their empire, everything had begun to
unravel.
The secret base was exposed.
The Mysterious Organization was destroyed.
Their resource supply disappeared overnight.
And worse-
With Empress Sun Yaoqing's reforms, the empire had begun implementing policies aimed at weakening noble privileges and bringing greater equality
between people.
That meant fewer advantages for clans like the Quan Clan.
Their position was already beginning to weaken.
"Damn it!"
Quan Lingshu grabbed one of the financial reports and hurled it across the
room.
Just when he thought his clan was soaring into prosperity-
They had been dragged straight back to reality.
"Useless!"
He slammed his fist onto the desk.
"Everyone is useless!"
He cursed.
"What makes you so angry?"
A calm voice suddenly spoke from behind him.
"...!"
Quan Lingshu froze.
A chill ran down his spine.
Someone was inside his study hall.
But how?
There were guards stationed throughout the compound.
How had someone infiltrated this place without making a single sound?
Moreover, how could he fail to sense someone standing so close?
"Who?!"
He spun around instantly, Qi flaring as he prepared to attack.
But when he saw the figure standing near the doorway-
His expression stiffened.
The young man stood casually in the shadows, leaning lightly against the wall as
if he had been there for some time.
Moonlight filtered through the window, illuminating his face.
For a moment, Quan Lingshu couldn't believe his eyes.
"...Chong Sheng?"
The name left his mouth almost instinctively.
Yet even as he said it, uncertainty crept into his voice.
The man looked... different.
His face was the same, but sharper and more refined.
His features had matured.
His aura had changed completely.
The former slave who once stood before them trembling and bloodied-
Was gone.
Now the young man looked almost unnaturally handsome, his expression calm
and confident.
But the most terrifying thing-
Was the dense demonic Qi quietly swirling around him like a living shadow.
Chong Sheng smiled faintly.
"Oh... It seems you still remember me. I am quite honored, Clan Leader Quan. I
almost thought you might have forgotten me by now."
Chong Sheng said playfully.
Quan Lingshu's pupils shrank.
A cold sweat instantly formed across his back.
"How... how did you get in here?"
His mind raced.
The guards.
The defensive formations.
None of them had noticed anything.
Chong Sheng slowly pushed himself away from the wall.
Thud! Thud!
His footsteps echoed softly across the quiet room.
"Getting in was quite easy honestly."
His gaze swept across the room, briefly pausing on the scattered financial
reports.
"Looks like the Quan Clan is struggling quie a bit."
Quan Lingshu frowned.
"Guards!"
Quan Lingshu called out.
"What are you all doing? There is an intruder here!"
He yelled, but no one came.
He was confused.
Just what was happening?
"Keke... They won't be able to come."
Chong Sheng said as he revealed a bloodied knife.
It seemed that before coming to Quan Lingshu's room, he had already taken
care of the nearby guards.
"Even if they do, they will face the same fate."
A terrifying pressure began to fill the room.
The demonic Qi leaking from Chong Sheng's body was far stronger than before.
Much stronger.
"That's impossible... You are in the Void Refinement Realm?"
Quan Lingshu muttered.
Just months ago, Chong Sheng had barely escaped with his life.
How could he have grown this powerful so quickly?
Chong Sheng stopped a few steps away from him.
The faint smile on his lips slowly widened.
"Nothing is truly impossible when it comes to me."
He continued.
"You seemed quite confident last time."
His voice was soft.
But the killing intent hidden within it made the temperature of the room drop.
"Let's see whether you will have the same confidence today."
Quan Lingshu's eyes flashed with killing intent.
Before Chong Sheng could say another word-
He moved.
A hidden dagger slipped from his sleeve as his body burst forward with
explosive speed.
Slash!
The blade tore through the air, aimed directly at Chong Sheng's throat.
His Qi surged violently as he poured his full strength into the sneak attack.
The strike was fast and deadly.
For a split second-
Quan Lingshu's face twisted into a triumphant grin.
"Fool!"
He laughed loudly.
"One should never waste time talking in front of an enemy!"
His eyes gleamed with vicious satisfaction.
"You should have attacked the moment you had the chance! This is the result of
your overconfidence."
But then-
His laughter stopped.
The blade had passed cleanly through Chong Sheng's body.
Yet-
There was no resistance.
No blood.
No impact.
His dagger had cut through nothing but air.
The image of Chong Sheng in front of him flickered like a mirage-
And vanished.
Quan Lingshu's pupils shrank.
"...What?"
A calm voice suddenly spoke behind him.
"Really?"
Cold breath brushed the back of his neck. Quan Lingshu's body stiffened.
Chong Sheng was standing directly behind him.
"Wai-"
Quan Lingshu barely managed to utter the word.
Before he could finish-
Chong Sheng suddenly appeared in front of him.
So fast that Quan Lingshu didn't even see him move.
A hand shot forward and grabbed him by the throat.
"Ghk-!"
Quan Lingshu's body slammed against the wall.
The wooden panels cracked under the force.
His Qi erupted desperately as he tried to struggle free.
But Chong Sheng's grip didn't move an inch.
His eyes stared coldly into Quan Lingshu's terrified gaze.
"I told you something before I left."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"That I would come back. And when I do..."
The demonic Qi around him surged violently.
"...I would reduce this clan to ashes."
