213: The Answer He Needed.
213: The Answer He Needed.
Unsure of how much time had passed since he had blacked out, Arthur found himself in the same black void with which he had begun developing a sense of familiarity.
However, this time, something was different.
Within the endless expanse, Arthur witnessed flashes of light, as if a thunderstorm was occurring in the distance.
Eerie sparks flickered violently amongst the darkness, yet no sound could be heard.
Over the last few weeks, Arthur had developed some proficiency in harnessing and manipulating his visions, yet this was different.
Much like the first few times he used this power, he felt powerless at the whims of whatever guided his path.
Arthur’s consciousness was suddenly thrust into a situation he had never seen before.
A young boy, roughly ten to twelve years of age based on his appearance alone, was strapped to a medical table in what looked to be a laboratory.
Yet, it was unlike the laboratory Arthur was familiar with.
The boy looked lifeless.
His skin was pale, almost a sickly grey and his eyes didn’t contain even a glimpse of emotion.
If it weren’t for the obvious signs of breathing and the beads of sweat pouring down his head, likely from the searing heat of the surgical lights beaming down on him, Arthur would have believed he was a corpse.
Several people wearing hazmat suits were in the same room as the child.
Two of them were working with a small tank full of a strange black liquid that looked alive.
The black liquid writhed violently, forming jagged, claw-like protrusions that scraped against the glass as if desperate to break free.
“Synchronisation tests have all come back positive.
Habitation tests have all concluded with no issues.
The subject has been prepared for cohabitation.
All vitals are within acceptable range.” A cold voice spoke into the room through a speaker.
“The final surgery will commence.” With the voice concluding, another person within the room began drilling into the young boy’s skull from the top of his forehead.
The young boy’s agonising scream startled Arthur, but before he could see anything else, he was suddenly brought back into the void.
‘Is this all you’re going to show me?
Constant death and torture?’ Arthur agonised.
The next scene began forming around him.
The sky was stormy, with dark rainclouds blocking the ‘Oh great, now you’re going to show me the London Bridge falling down?’ He thought to himself, ‘Or I guess it’d be the Tower Bridge; London Bridge would be the next one upstream…’ A tall, nerdy-looking guy and a beautiful woman were walking along the edge of the bridge, arm in arm, under a shared umbrella.
They seemed to be having a conversation but Arthur couldn’t make out what they were saying.
The sky behind the rain clouds began shifting into a vibrant dark purple, and a loud rumbling thunder signalled to everyone in the area that something unusual was about to happen.
Within moments, several violent bursts of lightning struck down upon the bridge, ignoring factors like the tallest point, for the most part.
Several vehicles traversing the road had been suddenly struck, with the lightning melting a hole through the roof of an unlucky sedan.
The loud crackling was almost deafening.
Arthur’s attention was returned to the couple walking alongside the bridge.
They appeared to have abandoned the umbrella in hopes that the lightning wouldn’t be attracted to them, and the tall man was attempting to shield the woman from the elements with his body as the two of them ran towards the closest end of the bridge.
Before Arthur could see anything else, the scene suddenly shifted once more.
He was once again in the Watt’s estate, following along as the group of criminals entered the forest.
The scene played out exactly as it had done before, with Arthur slowly floating behind the criminals as they approached his mother’s location.
“Donovan, is that you?” He heard his mother call out and watched as her facial expression turned into shock as the criminals appeared from the shadows.
“Arthur, go run to Donovan and Aunty.
Quickly now.” “Who you?” Young Arthur asked, pointing to one of the criminals before he was quickly swept up by his mother and carried through the forest.
The rest of the scene played out as he knew it.
A knife prevented her from running any further, and young Arthur was forced to run away.
A knife flew into one of the criminals’ eyes, starting the counterattack.
But this was short-lived as the continuous blood loss ate her stamina.
While she did her best, she found herself knocked down and bloodied.
Arthur turned away from his mother for a moment, instead choosing to stare towards the direction where his younger self had run.
As though he expected something to appear, a few seconds later, young Arthur stepped out from behind a tree and ran towards one of the men with a stick.
“Leave my mommy alone, bad man!” Young Arthur roared as he swung the stick towards the man, throwing it mid-swing.
The person it was thrown at merely brushed it to the side without any effort.
“I don’t remember the report saying she had a brat.” One of the guys said.
“She supposedly has a daughter around the kid’s age.” Another responded, “Could have gotten it wrong.
Let’s grab the kid as well, and if we can’t use it as leverage, we can just dump it.” As the criminals closed in on the young Arthur, his mother picked up the stick that was brushed aside and rammed it through a man’s throat, right in front of Arthur.
“Leave my son alone you sick basta–” Before she could finish her threatening speech, a knife was thrust into her chest.
The scene began to fade away, but Arthur used what little control he contained to bring the scene back into focus.
By the time the scene had reformed, young Arthur had run back into the treeline, and one of the criminals ran after him.
Arthur watched as his mother used the last of her strength to rip the knife from her chest and throw it at the criminal attempting to kidnap her son.
The blade flew unsteady but had still pierced the man’s Achilles tendon, causing his attempt to quickly come to an end.
Arthur watched as the light faded from his mother’s eyes, but her facial expression made her seem as though she was satisfied with the outcome rather than fearful of her death.
“Shit, how did one bitch do this much damage.” One of the men angrily roared before stomping on the face of the deceased woman.
“You should never have given her an easy death.” An argument between the criminals and the man with the Asian accent quickly stopped when they detected torchlight and voices closing in on their position.
The criminals all scampered towards the fence, with the bulkiest man carrying around the corpse of one of their accomplices.
The other remaining criminal was limping along and holding his wounded eye.
Arthur watched with searing anger as the criminals scaled the fence and successfully escaped.
His anger boiled as he heard the wails of grief coming from the forest behind him when his mother’s corpse was finally found.
The group split up when the man carrying around the corpse walked off in the opposite direction to the other two.
Arthur followed the Asian man and the limping man as he felt like they had more important information to share.
He followed the two down an alleyway, where he noticed the two started to argue once more.
“Your stupid plan got my brother killed.
You said this was an easy job, in and out.
You didn’t mention that she–” Before the criminal could finish his sentence, his throat was sliced open.
“I hate dealing with your kind, western scum.” The Asian man taunted, “It is always ‘me me me’ with you people.
Our organisation has decided to cease operations with you, effective immediately.” The man took a phone out of his pocket and dialled.
He briefly observed the area around him before he removed his mask, and as the phone was answered, he began speaking in a language Arthur couldn’t understand but immediately recognised.
‘He’s Chinese.’ Arthur thought.
“I know father has issues with them, but why would they try to kill Olivia?” As those thoughts ran through his mind, he stared at the man’s exposed face, trying to burn his appearance into his memory.
‘I’ve got you now, you son of a bitch.’ Arthur thought, ‘I can find you now…’ The scene faded away and, for a brief moment, had reformed once more.
Arthur immediately recognised the building he was standing in front of, it was the front of the building where his father’s completed reactor was stored in the future.
The location where the grand event would be held on the day it would turn on.
But what grabbed his attention more was that he, as an adult, was standing in front of a dishevelled woman sitting in the fetal position, rocking back and forth.
The most disturbing detail, however, was that he was pointing a gun towards her.
Before he could absorb any further details, a sharp pain flooded his entire body, and everything returned to nothingness.
