Chapter 456 - Debriefing

This chapter is updated by NovelFree.ml

Dave moved steadily ahead and away from the forge. He wanted to complete the Abyssal Knight challenge and officially enter the ranks of the Undead Legion's mightiest by today's end. The Undead King's assault on the Ash King was nigh, and he wanted to play an active part in the conquest. Then the world would come to learn of the Undead Legion's full might.

Yet the Ash King was a hurdle they needed to fight sooner rather than later. The ruler of Demons was about to start recruiting players, making the whole task extremely difficult for Dave.

The Demons were already powerful on their own, add the Players to the mix and they would be up against a force that couldn't be stopped. Even the Undead Legion would suffer from that kind of collaboration.

Dave opened his undead management panel. In the Undead Ascension option, he clicked on the Abyssal Knight challenge. He paid 1,000,000 Cp to take the challenge.

He immediately received a notification afterward.

***

You have chosen to take on the Abyssal Knight Challenge.

You only have one chance at succeeding it! Do not fail!

The Undead King has requested your presence to fill you up on the details of your challenge.

Make haste!

***

Dave moved toward the palace, unobstructed by any of the Doom Knight palace guardians. All gave way for Dave as they bowed and moved away. He didn't doubt that the armor set he wore was the reason for it.

Once Dave climbed up to the Throne Room, the Undead King, on a rare occasion, was standing in the middle of the hall instead of sitting on his throne.

Dave kneeled and addressed him: "Your Majesty, I come to start my Quest."

"Yes My Childe, it is today that you shall become one of Our mightiest children. We have a task for you, that you must not fail in. Know, that if such misfortune happens, We shall not think any less of you, as you have proven that you are truly of the Legion, again, and again." The Undead King solemnly spoke.

"Thank you for your trust, but I'll make sure to fulfill this mission at all costs!" Dave replied.

"I pray for your success. Samael, come," the Undead King called.

The Shadow Ghoul Abyssal Knight showed up in the middle of the room, bloodied, battered, and missing a limb.

"What the hell happened to you?" Dave asked shocked.

"Hell itself," Samael snorted.

Dave waited for the ghoul to give him a full recounting of what happened. The one and only time Dave had seen the Abyssal Knight Samael in such a condition, was when he fought against the Undead King himself. To end up battered to this extent meant that he fought something extremely strong.

"I've failed my quest in retrieving the God Slaying Bolt. I was caught the moment I tried to enter the vault and the Ash King's minions caught up to me. I fought to save my hide, but as you can clearly see from my appearance I was unsuccessful. Were it not for Dagla, I'd have been a goner for sure," Samael finally revealed.

"It sucks, but I don't see the problem. I mean even if you died, you would have returned thanks to the Death Heart right?" Dave said.

"Not after I got struck by the God Slaying Bolt. That wretched thing temporarily removes the Death Heart's immortality. For the next few days I am truly and utterly mortal. Should I have died at the Ash King's Keep my death would have been permanent. That's why Dagla sacrificed a good portion of his magic to bring me back. He is recuperating, and I'll need to wait for a few days before the full effect of the God Slaying Bolt dissipates before I can regenerate my limb."

"Damn that sounds like a nasty tool. So let me guess, it's now up to me to go and retrieve that God Slaying Bolt?" Dave asked the Undead King.

"As usual, you understand quickly, Childe. Yes, Our hope now lies on you succeeding. We have but you to trust with such an impossible task," The Undead King nodded.

Dave laughed, "Wouldnt that be belittling Samael's hard work? I'm not as strong as him."

"Childe, you have been with us long enough. Has strength ever been the deciding factor for our Undead Legion, or was it after all the wit and correct usage of one's mind? Samael had been expected to come, so the God Slaying Bolt had been placed at a location intended to trap and kill our best assassins. It was designed to counter Samael, but not to counter Kis'Shtiengbrah. Go and retrieve the object. Samael shall tell you all you need to know about it. Meanwhile, we shall prepare everything for your return." The Undead King instructed him. There was the hint of a smile on his face as he spoke about Dave's return.

***

Abyssal Knight Ascension Quest.

You have been tasked to retrieve the "God Slaying Bolt", the very tool that almost killed the Undeath God, responsible for wiping any memory of him from the minds of the Undead.

After being used recently, it's in its most vulnerable state and the Ash King will not expect another attempt due to the Legion's most fearsome assassin getting repelled.

Ask Samael for more information on the tool's whereabouts and how to reach it.

***

Dave turned to the Ghoul and did as his Quest description told him. The latter coughed and instructed him to follow after him. Once Samael moved out of the palace room, the Undead King placed his hand on Dave's shoulder and wished him well "Good luck, my son."

Just for a moment, Dave felt an unfamiliar warmth swelling inside of him, a father figure immediately replaced his own biological father. The Undead King, even for a moment, felt like a real father to Dave, and due to his concern and worry for Dave, he in turn wanted to do all within his power to fulfill the Quest and make the Undead King proud of him.

"There is no need to worry or have any doubt in your heart, I will succeed!"

"It is for this, that We love you so, Childe," the Undead King smiled and removed his hand, a signal for the latter to move on.

Dave nodded and followed after Samael, even wounded and battered, the ghoul was still fast on his feet and had arrived at the lower parts of the palace much faster than Dave.

Once the two of them reached on the lowest floor, a disheveled Dagla met them. Dave immediately noticed long black veins spreading across the Arch-lich's body, his hands and his face appeared more emaciated than before.

The Great Arch-Lich looked in agony, but he denied it the moment Dave asked him about it.

"Stop lying! You're in an even worse condition than I am and I'm missing an arm and cursed into being mortal again," Samael pointed out.

"Really?" Dave turned towards the Arch-Lich with worry in his eyes.

"Don't believe this old fossil. It's merely a bit of Mana exhaustion. It's been decades since I had to use up that much of it. Nothing a good rest can't fix. But enough about me, His Majesty has tasked you to retrieve the Bolt. Sadly Samael can't accompany you, nor can any of the other Abyssal Knights. Unfortunately, the security in the Ash King's Keep has been designed to specifically target and limit our access to it. Fortunately, you are not yet an Abyssal Knight."

"Yes, that's what this whole thing is about anyway. Now, can you please tell me the details, location and the hurdles I'll have to face while trying to get that thing back?"

"Well, the location is obviously the Ash King's Keep, the fort of his power and where he is mightiest. The enemies will be the entire damned Demonic Race, and for the details, the Bolt is in the hand of one of his Chosen Ones." Dagla explained.

"Hol'up! You mean I'll have to literally go behind enemy lines, fight against another Chosen One, beat his ass while there are god knows how many millions of Demons lurking in wait, all under the watchful gaze of the Ash King and afterward somehow take back a God Killing tool without dying in the process?"

Both Dagla and Samael looked at each other and replied, "You summarized it nicely, so yes."

Dave looked at the two for a moment and said, "Certainty of death... Small chance of success... What am I waiting for?"
