“After a long time had passed since the child was lost, I had discovered by accident that we didn’t even share the same blood.”
Cheng Yuzhou’s turbulent mood finally calmed down after much trouble, and he began to narrate to Tang Guo about the love-hate relationship he had with wife in a flat and straightforward tone.
“Whose child was it?”
“It was my wife’s ex-lover. Her lover was a married man who wanted to have an affair but didn’t want to take responsibility. After my wife and I met, she took advantage of me being drunk and sent me home together with my friend, then, she stayed the night at my home.
“Did you guys do it?”
“I don’t know, I had lost consciousness after getting drunk, so I didn’t know how I got home. Later on, my wife was found to be pregnant, so we immediately held a shotgun marriage.”
“What happened next?”
Upon realizing that Cheng Yuzhou had stopped talking and had started to blank out, Tang Guo asked in continuity.
“After the child was born, he started living in the hospital almost everyday because he was easily afflicted with minor illnesses like colds, fevers and the like.
Cheng Yuzhou started to choke up a little when he said this. After taking a short break, he then continued.
“After he was finally cured, his illness soon relapsed. We hired two nannies to take turns in taking care of the child but he still fell sick. The child was too young. He couldn’t withstand the constant torment and before he could even turn 1, he passed away.”
Tang Guo could already hear the faint whimper in his voice and her heart felt similarly pained as though a needle was stabbing it but she could only hug Cheng Yuzhou’s waist tighter in comfort.
Cheng Yuzhou turned around and picked Tang Guo up, letting her sit on top of him. Then, he buried his head into the girl’s neck and cried silently.
The man’s hot tears flowed endlessly down the girl’s neck, soon soaking her shoulder.
Tang Guo couldn’t think of any ways to comfort Cheng Yuzhou, and her heart was brimming with sympathy, grief and distress, so she started crying together with him.
The two people hugged each other tightly under the shade of the trees, on top of the empty mountain. Not a word was uttered as one cried loudly in sadness while the other cried silently.
After a long time, Cheng Yuzhou gradually calmed down and lifted his head from Tang Guo’s neck. The man’s eyes were teary and red, tears streaming down his entire face.
Tang Guo took out a tissue from her skirt pocket and gently wiped Cheng Yuzhou’s face before blowing her own nose.
The man shut his eyes while his arms were still around Tang Guo’s waist. He quietly cooperated with the girl’s action and after the girl was finished with his face, she started wiping her own.
“At that time, I felt like the sky was collapsing and I wanted to kill myself. Why didn’t I pay enough attention to the child’s sickness? If I had quit my job and taken care of the child at home, instead of just asking for leave while the child was in the hospital, would the child still be alive right now?”
“Yuzhou, you can’t think like that. Nobody was in the wrong for this matter so nobody should think like that.”
Tang Guo stroked Cheng Yuzhou’s head, trying to comfort him and prevent his thoughts from spiralling into the wrong direction.
“No! I already know whose fault it was! If it weren’t for her, this tragedy wouldn’t have happened at all!”
“Why do you say that? Did you find out something afterwards?”
This was a very difficult topic, because every word he uttered reopened a wound that was already starting to scab and the old wounds once again started to bleed.
