Chapter 3147 Three Tasks

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Having more or less determined the general scope of everyone's powers, albeit not in a detailed fashion, the eleven demigods could finally discuss the grave matter of humanity's survival from an informed position.

There were countless minute decisions they had to make — minute only in the grand scope of the apocalypse, of course. In truth, each of these issues could decide the fate of thousands, if not millions of people. Put all together, these minor choices could decide the fate of all humanity, as well.

Luckily, the eleven Supremes did not have to figure out every little detail — like the precise deployment of troops, the timing of each resettlement effort, the resource allocation for the refugees, and so on — themselves. They simply had to decide the general direction in which they wanted to move and entrust the rest to their subordinates, who were far more competent in the infinitely complex task of managing the day-to-day function of humanity.

There was also the fact that planning anything in too much detail was simply meaningless, since the situation across both worlds was highly unstable and changing unpredictably every day. So, the best anyone could do was prepare for the highest possible number of eventualities and pray that the worst projected scenarios would not come to pass.

Even if, deep down, that was pretty much exactly what everyone was expecting to happen.

If one disregarded this infinite number of minor decisions, though, it all boiled down to three profound choices.

The Supremes of humanity had to accomplish three global tasks.

Someone had to conquer the Fifth Nightmare. Someone had to keep the Dream Realm from being consumed by an endless tide of Nightmare Creatures. And, finally, someone had to make sure that billions of people did not perish while the waking world was falling apart.

So, the most important decision facing them was just that — they had to decide who would undertake each of the three tasks.

It was obvious that Sunny and Nephis would challenge the Nightmare. They were the most experienced Supremes among the rulers of humanity, after all, as well as the strongest. However, it was unclear if they would enter the Seed alone or in the company of trustworthy allies.

Sunny had somewhat expected Mordret to volunteer — he had mentioned considering doing just that, after all. In addition, although the Mordret of today was not the same as the Mordret of yesterday, he still wielded a Divine Aspect. Among the Sovereigns, only he could claim to be as powerful as Sunny and Nephis were.

The guy avoided committing to an answer, though, either still hesitating or preferring not to share his decision. This new Mordret was a strange guy... Sunny received an impression that he did not care whether humanity survived too much, extending his help only out of courtesy. Mordret had isolated himself from the rest of the world, maintaining contact with just a few select people, like Morgan, Rain, or Cassie.

He wasn't as invested in the apocalypse as the rest of them. However, it was precisely because Mordret still seemed to care about at least one person — his sister — that Sunny felt like he could very well choose the Nightmare, in the end.

While Mordret abstained from voicing an opinion, someone else surprised them, though.

It was Cassie, expressing her intent to challenge the Fifth Nightmare with them. She spoke the words in a steadfast tone, as if having made the decision a long time ago.

Sunny had a feeling that she might want to follow them into the Seed, but then again, Cassie had an established role in the vast machine of humanity. Many things depended on her, so her absence would be felt almost as much as that of Nephis.

For that reason, he had assumed that she would choose to stay.

Sunny was not sure how he felt about being proven wrong. On one hand, there was a sense of joy in his heart... relief, even. Cassie was their closest friend and confidant, after all — a companion unlike any other. Many years ago, it had all started with the three of them enduring the dire trials of the Forgotten Shore.

There was no need to mention how powerful and useful to have around Cassie was, either. In a battle, she might not have been the most fearsome of the Supremes, but her profound affinity to revelations had saved them almost as many times as cold steel. Her Aspect and Domain were also exceedingly unique, making her a priceless ally.

But it was precisely because of how deep the bond between them ran that Sunny felt uneasy and reluctant at the thought of Cassie joining them in the Nightmare. All Nightmares were deadly, after all, and the Fifth one promised to be more harrowing than the rest of them. Sunny knew that he might never return from it... but the thought of Cassie perishing in the depths of a Nightmare cut him deeper.

It was easy to risk your own life, after all. Putting the lives of those you cherished at risk, though? That was a far more bitter pill to swallow.

In the end, however, there was nothing he could do — not that he would, anyway. Cassie was a Supreme now, same as Sunny, so he could not dictate her decisions. He had no ground to stand on, and no desire to refuse her help either.

So, on that day, it was decided that the three of them — Changing Star, Lost from Light, and Song of the Fallen — would enter the Seed of a Fifth Nightmare and attempt to become the new deities of humanity. With the decision made, many plans had to be adjusted. The other Sovereigns had already come to terms with the thought that Sunny and Nephis would be absent for a long time — years, most likely, and judging by how long the others had spent in the Fourth Nightmare, it might not be only a couple of years either. Now, they had to contend with the fact that Cassie would be gone as well.

Without her, a lot of things would change. At any other time, the news that Song of the Fallen would disappear for an unknown number of years would have caused a shockwave among the people who depended on her knowledge, insight, and mental communication to survive. However, today, it was almost a footnote — because a far more staggering change was about to occur.

The Longing Domain, which had served as the supporting pillar of humanity in the dire years of the early apocalypse, would soon cease to exist.
