Chapter 4004: The Gate

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

After pausing for a moment, Greater Sancte Awe Gate continued to explain, “Qi Xu is dead. Greater Sancte Green Lotus split her emotions into seven parts because those emotions were the source of Qi Xu’s power. As long as they exist, then from a distance, Obscura will assume that Qi Xu is still alive. We were aware that her emotions were scattered, but because of the vast distance, Obscura could never sense that as long as those seven emotions remained within the Nine Odysseys Megaverse.

“However, just now, some individual from Obscura was able to sense that Qi Xu had died from that single sword strike. What we will next face is Obscura, and they are a formidable foe. There is no doubt that that one is an Immortal.”

She then turned to look at Lu Yin. “Even among Immortals, there are those stronger and those weaker. The Immortal from Obscura that we just faced is more powerful than even Qi Xu.”

Lu Yin’s heart sank. He had also felt the strength of the mysterious attacker. That sword shadow had been terrifying, and he had only faced an echo of the first sword shadow.

Even Greater Sancte Awe Gate had needed to use the full power of her Awe Gate to block the attack. It seemed possible that the attacker surpassed even her.

“Will they come?”

“For the moment, I don’t know. From what we understand of Obscura, they do not personally take action.”

Suddenly, Lu Yin thought of Che and asked about him.

Greater Sancte Awe Gate warily replied, “He too is part of Obscura. When he first entered within the three human megaverses’ range, he specifically informed Greater Sancte Green Lotus of his presence here and claimed to only be searching for his weapon.

“However, unlike Qi Xu, Che bears no hostility toward us.

“As for his human form, it is possible that he only used that as a convenience for communicating with us, like a gesture of goodwill from one above.”

Lu Yin felt a touch of bitterness appear in his heart. A gesture of goodwill from one above? How benevolent.

He thought for a moment. “Che simply isn’t hostile towards us for the time being. It might be better to say that Obscura has clear divisions of duty, and we simply aren’t on his list of targets.”

Lu Yin had examined the karma of the creature within the meteorite, and its entire civilization had been destroyed by Che’s weapon. That Immortal certainly was not peaceful.

Greater Sancte Awe Gate did not argue, as she also knew that Che had destroyed entire civilizations before. While she did not know which ones, Obscura was a fishing civilization, and as such, it was guaranteed that it had destroyed multiple civilizations. That was also a rule.

The truth was that Che had been allowed to enter the Heavenly Karmic Macrocosm only so that humanity could avoid gaining yet another enemy.

Also, to prevent him from learning of Qi Xu’s death, they had carefully avoided any confrontations.

Lu Yin was starting to understand the struggles of the Greater Sancti. They had even less freedom than he did, and they had no time to keep an eye on internal affairs. Their focus always remained outward.

Over time, several Immortals who were part of Obscura had interacted with the human civilization.

There had been the dead Qi Xu, Che, who had gone to the Consciousness Megaverse, and the Immortal who had just unleashed that blue sword shadow.

“How many Immortals does Obscura have?”

Greater Sancte Awe Gate’s voice grew bitter. “If we knew that, we would be able to understand the gap between us and a fishing civilization. Unfortunately, we cannot see it.”

Lu Yin was coming to learn how much he hated hearing answers like “cannot see,” “do not know,” or “aware of our limits.” All of them indicated a lack of control.

How was it that the stronger one’s cultivation and combat strength rose, the less control one had over their own destiny?

“Destroying that gate doesn’t matter now, does it? Obscura has already discovered us.”

Greater Sancte Awe Gate’s tone grew heavy. “For now, we are alright. If Obscura wishes to attack us with another civilization, they will need to bring another gate here. Otherwise, they will need to take action themselves. Greater Sancti Green Lotus and Blood Tower should be returning soon.”

“Is the Gate of Laws another one of their gates?” Lu Yin suddenly asked.

Greater Sancte Awe Gate nodded. “Yes. Gates were left in both the Nine Odysseys Megaverse and the Spirit Nidus. Fortunately, we discovered the Gate of Laws. If we hadn’t, it would have posed a terrible threat.”

“How did you learn about the Gate of Laws? Does the Zhan family have some connection to the Netherfiends?”

“The Zhan family was originally from the Nine Odysseys Megaverse. We sent them to the Spirit Nidus to protect the Gate of Laws. If they ever judged that the situation had become uncontrollable, they were ordered to seal themselves.”

“Does that mean that the Terminus Cycle is also from the Nine Odysseys Megaverse?”

Greater Sancte Awe Gate nodded. “Yes. The Spirit Nidus’s most powerful sequence base did indeed come from the Nine Odysseys Megaverse. Why else do you think that not even the Ascendant Hall has ever controlled the Terminus Cycle? Instead, the Zhan family has maintained sole possession of it, with not even the High Seraph daring to seize it.”

Lu Yin understood. This explained many things. It was no wonder why the Zhan family had been able to seal themselves away with the Terminus Cycle, and not even the High Seraph had ever gone to make trouble for them.

It also explained why Old Yu and Zhan Ming had cooperated with each other.

No wonder there were so many legends about the Gate of Laws in the Spirit Nidus, some of which even related to the Immortal realm.

No wonder when the Nest civilization invaded, the defense of the thirty-six domains had been arranged so that the Gate of Laws was at the center of those defenses.

Disasters could strike anywhere, but it could not impact the Zhan family.

“Legend claims that three keys are needed to open the Gate of Laws. What’s the purpose of that?” Lu Yin asked.

He had many questions, and Greater Sancte Awe Gate patiently answered all of them. “That was done merely to mislead the Netherfiends. However, they never went to the Spirit Nidus. The people of the Spirit Nidus bitterly fought amongst themselves, yet it mattered little. All of their efforts were always meaningless.”

Lu Yin was left speechless.

Meaningless? Zhan Ming had paid so much for one of those three keys. Clearly, the man himself knew nothing about the truth of the Gate of Laws.

That was also true of Yi Shang and even Yong Heng. Right, Yong Heng got his hands on two keys before, and yet he gave me one. While that appeared to be for the sake of maintaining balance, he might have never actually cared. If that’s the case, then Yong Heng already knew back then that the three keys could not open the gate. That gate was never intended to be opened by keys.

Yong Heng betrayed the Netherfiends, so it makes sense for him to know about their gates.

The Zhan family’s duty was to protect the gate, but they could never be told what it truly represented.

How pitiful. Everyone had been played, even the High Seraph.

This was because of a secret that none but the Greater Sancti should ever be aware of.

“So why not just destroy that gate?” Lu Yin asked.

Greater Sancte Awe Gate remained silent for a moment. “To leave humanity a path of escape.”

Lu Yin stared at the woman in a daze. In the face of the threat of Obscura, the Immortals had done everything possible. Even the enemy’s gate was seen as a ray of hope.

“But doesn’t this also mean that Obscura can activate that gate at any time?”

“There are certain prerequisites to activate their gates. Why else do you think the Heavenly Karmic Macrocosm covers such a vast region? Why do you think I reacted so quickly to destroy that last gate and block the blue sword shadow? It was because that sword shadow is the prerequisite to opening the gate.

“As long as we can ensure that Obscura cannot meet that condition, that gate will remain useless.”

Lu Yin frowned. “Not completely. A creature already came into the Spirit Nidus through that gate.”

Naturally, he was referring to Stillstorm. Old Salamander had seen Stillstorm, and he had been so awed by the god-like creature that he had abandoned his identity as a member of the Zhan family and instead chosen to undergo a beast-form Spirit Rebirth, believing that Stillstorm was the strongest creature in the entire cosmos.

Greater Sancte Awe Gate sighed. “We learned of that as well, which is why Greater Sancte Green Lotus passed through the gate to investigate.”

“Greater Sancte Green Lotus passed through the Gate of Laws?” This was brand new information to Lu Yin. Earlier, he had asked where the Immortal had gone, but Greater Sancte Awe Gate had refused to say.

Greater Sancti Green Lotus and Blood Tower had both left the human megaverses, only for the Nest civilization to attack. That had been a stroke of terrible luck for the Nine Odysseys Megaverse.

“You knew that something passed through the Gate of Laws?”

Greater Sancte Awe Gate directed an intense stare at Lu Yin. “Greater Sancte Green Lotus used karma to investigate certain people and events related to you, and that recently included the Spirit Nidus’s Old Salamander. That investigation revealed that his karma is actually connected to the Gate of Laws. Theoretically, unless Obscura opens the gate, no creature should be able to pass through from the other side. The fact that that happened means that the gate and the other side had to be investigated.

“It is not even safe to simply destroy that gate. No one knows if the creature that came through it might have gathered coordinates of the Spirit Nidus’s location.”

Lu Yin was puzzled about something. “Does this mean that you were unaware of Stillstorm passing through the Gate of Laws?”

Greater Sancte Awe Gate shook her head. “That creature appeared in the Spirit Nidus without our notice. That gate has been there for far too long, and it was always within the Heavenly Karmic Macrocosm. Some sort of external power must have been used to open that gate. None of us could have imagined anything passing through it. It might be difficult for even Obscura to explain that incident.

“Wait, Stillstorm?”

Only then did Greater Sancte Awe Gate realize what Lu Yin had said, and she stared at him in shock. “You know that creature?”

Lu Yin nodded. He then proceeded to share what he knew of Stillstorm, including what he had learned from Chang. After all, Lu Yin was no longer absolutely certain that Sillstorm had been the one to pass through the Gate of Laws.

“From the Tianyuan Megaverse? An Immortal?” Greater Sancte Awe Gate asked again to confirm.

Lu Yin nodded as he looked at Greater Sancte Awe Gate in utter confusion. “You really didn’t know?”

“We didn’t.”

That made no sense. Stillstorm was a truly ancient existence, but it could not be older than the Nine Odysseys Megaverse’s Greater Sancte Green Lotus. According to what the Origin Progenitor had shared about the Tianyuan’s history, Stillstorm only predated the emergence of humanity by a little bit. There had not been an extreme gap of time.

Because of that, regardless of whether Stillstorm was an Immortal, the beast should have still been within range of the Nine Odysseys Megaverse’s monitoring.

More importantly, if Stillstorm was truly an Immortal, then it should have been impossible for Greater Sancte Green Lotus and the others to have been unaware of the creature.

Despite that, they truly had not known of Stillstorm’s existence. Something was very wrong.

Lu Yin met Greater Sancte Awe Gate’s gaze and saw the same doubt in her eyes.

There was no reasonable explanation for their ignorance.

“It appears that we can only wait for Greater Sancti Green Lotus and Blood Tower to return,” Greater Sancte Awe Gate commented.

Lu Yin nodded, as there was nothing else to be done.

“In that case, have you seen that ‘Heaven’ character before, Senior?”

Greater Sancte Awe Gate’s expression grew solemn. “It’s a method that belongs to the Netherfiends. Most of them do not carry it, but it has occasionally appeared. We once suspected that it originated with Qi Xu, as each member of Obscura has a unique brand. However, Qi Xu is long dead, and even if her remnant power allows the Netherfiends to evade our senses, her brand should no longer exist.

“It is precisely that brand that allows the Netherfiends to remain hidden, though we don’t know where it comes from.

“Most likely, it is not a brand that belongs to a single individual from Obscura, but is rather a brand of Obscura as a whole. Or perhaps-”

Lu Yin interjected, “Or perhaps there is still someone from Obscura still hiding within human civilization.”

Previously, he had not intended to reveal this matter which had occurred during the war with the Nest civilization, even though it was connected to the death of Greater Sancte Mi Jin. However, with Greater Sancte Awe Gate speaking of Obscura, Lu Yin had decided to bring it up to see if anything could be confirmed.

Regardless of whether Lu Yin trusted the Nine Odysseys Megaverse’s three Greater Sancti, at least one of them was undoubtedly defending humanity. If Greater Sancte Awe Gate was trustworthy, then Lu Yin’s information would help her. If not, this would serve as a test.

Greater Sancte Awe Gate gave a low hum. “We hope that that is not the case. In fact, the chances of it being the case are extremely remote. If someone from Obscura was truly hidden here, then how could they have allowed Qi Xu to be killed? Why would they have stayed in our human civilization for so many years? They should have either attacked long ago or simply left, like Che. That is why we are inclined to believe that the Heaven character belongs to Obscura as a whole, serving as their collective brand.”
