Chapter 4247: Meeting Gift

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Greater Sancte Awe Gate was furious. “You lied to me?”

“You really can’t consider it lying. I always wanted you to learn Divine Sight, but back then, you hadn’t decided to stay. Our civilization’s rules state that outsiders are not allowed to learn Divine Sight, so I couldn’t tell you openly and could only mention the Jumping Line of Sight. Truthfully, if you had stayed back then, you would have already mastered Divine Sight by now.”

“But I want the Jumping Line of Sight.”

“It really can’t be taught, Xiao Zhi. I swear it—I swear on everything I have. The Jumping Line of Sight is an innate gift that one can only be born with. It simply cannot be taught.”

Awe Gate glared at Chang Tian. This bastard!

Lu Yin’s heart plummeted. It was clear that Chang Tian was not lying. It was also true that the Jumping Line of Sight was normally not very useful. According to everyone’s understanding of things, an ability that shifted one’s perspective to jump to some unknown distance without hearing anything at that location was useless. What use was there in seeing so far? Gathering intelligence? Matter was constantly moving about the cosmos, so even if someone could remember a particular substance that allowed their sight to jump to a specific place, it was possible that the same matter would no longer be there years later.

The innate gift offered no offensive power, nor any ability to transmit messages, so it was not very useful.

While it was possible that it could play a role in war, its value could never compare to that of an Immortal, nor to Lu Yin’s teleportation.

In contrast, Divine Sight was important enough for the Longevity Civilization to instate a rule that forbade outsiders from learning it. Clearly, the battle technique was far more useful than the Jumping Line of Sight. At the very least, Lu Yin and Awe Gate had just argued extensively with Chang Tu and taken three strikes from him. In Chang Tu’s mind, all of the two’s efforts had been for the sake of learning Divine Sight. He had been reluctant to share that battle technique, not the Jumping Line of Sight.

From his perspective, it was only natural for Lu Yin to learn Divine Sight.

The old man had been completely ignorant to the fact that Lu Yin only wanted the Jumping Line of Sight and was unwilling to accept Divine Sight, no matter how powerful it might be.

Chang Tu had never felt so frustrated. He was already breaking his people’s rules by agreeing to teach Lu Yin Divine Sight, and yet the brat was actually refusing. Instead, he was insisting on an innate gift that was utterly useless to the Longevity Civilization. If that innate gift could be learned, Chang Tu would have gladly handed it over without another word, but it was an innate gift. How could an innate gift be learned?

The atmosphere froze in a stalemate.

“Human brat, we cannot give you the Jumping Line of Sight. Either learn Divine Sight or leave. There is no third option.” Chang Tu turned to stare off into the distance, no longer willing to so much as spare a glance for Lu Yin and Awe Gate. The old man’s expression fully revealed his contempt.

Awe Gate’s hands itched to slap Chang Tian twice. If she had known that things would turn out as they had, they would never have made this journey. It had all been a waste of time.

Then, something occurred to her. She turned to Lu Yin. “Can your Lu family’s ancestor plant another thing?”

Lu Yuan had successfully grown the innate gift of teleportation, and that ability had even come from a bug. There was no comparison in difficulty with the Jumping Line of Sight.

Lu Yin shook his head. “Ancestor is only able to plant three innate gifts: the Champions' Stage, the Investiture of the Gods, and teleportation. A fourth is impossible for now.”

Chang Tu and Chang Tian were not able to overhear the conversation. Teleportation could not be exposed to outsiders.

Awe Gate stared at Chang Tian. “Is there really no way? This is very important to us, extremely so.”

Chang Tian gave a helpless look. “I know you very well. If it were not important, you would have never come here. But there truly is no way. If there were even the smallest possibility, I would not allow you to be put in such a difficult position.”

Awe Gate let out a heavy sigh and looked down at Awecloud, broken in her hands.

Had they failed even despite her spear shattering?

“Honestly, you really should learn Divine Sight. It may not allow you to see an infinite distance like the Jumping Line of Sight, but it will at least allow you to see farther than you can now.” Chang Tian tried to convince Lu Yin.

Chang Tu shot the man a dirty look. “Ungrateful brat biting the hand that feeds him…”

Chang Tian gave an awkward laugh.

Seeing Awe Gate still staring at Awecloud, Lu Yin felt a pang of guilt. This trip absolutely could not end with nothing at all.

The Longevity Civilization was extremely powerful, and there were rumors that said that they had an unfathomable ancestor.

A civilization capable of producing such a being naturally would not have a legacy battle technique like Divine Sight that was anything simple.

After all the effort that they had already put into this effort, Lu Yin needed to at least learn Divine Sight. If not, it would be impossible to justify the costs.

With that in mind, he slowly cupped his hands. “I will have to trouble you, Senior. This junior will learn Divine Sight.”

Chang Tian let out a breath of relief. This will allow Xiao Zhi to stay a bit longer.

Awe Gate was helpless for the moment and could only go along with Lu Yin’s decision.

Chang Tu turned around, his gaze sweeping over the other three, his expression indifferent. “All I can grant you is the chance to try to learn Divine Sight. Whether you succeed or not depends on you. The vine-climbing contest is fair and impartial. You must fight for an opportunity on your own. If someone else snatches the spot, do not blame us.”

Lu Yin arched a brow. “Is there actually someone who can take it from me?”

He genuinely did not believe that.

Chang Tu sneered. “The vine-climbing contest is not a test of strength or cultivation. You will understand when the time comes. Regardless, the slots are limited. If you fail to secure one on your own, do not blame us. The competition is fair and impartial. What you do with it is up to you.

“Also, you will have to wait for two years. The standard is that the vine-climbing contest is held once every twenty years, and it has been only eight years since the last one. We will have to move it up because of you, but we still must give our youths at least two more years to prepare. Otherwise, they will not even be mature. You would not want to compete against children, would you?”

Lu Yin nodded. “I understand.”

“For these two years, you are not to go anywhere. You must stay in the place that I prepare for you. If you do not follow this rule, you will be expelled from the Longevity Civilization and sent back to wherever you came from.”

With that, the old man stepped away and headed off into the distance.

Chang Tian gestured for Lu Yin and Awe Gate to follow him.

Chang Tu moved very quickly, streaking through outer space as he led Lu Yin and the others to a corner of a particularly magnificent complex of structures. There, he ordered people to set up a sourcebox array that would ensure that Lu Yin and Awe Gate would not wander about for the next two years.

This sourcebox array could not actually contain the two, but the instant they left it, their movements would be discovered.

Several elderly individuals prepared the sourcebox array, all of them as skilled enough to be considered Array Grandmasters in human civilization. Upon learning that the purpose of the sourcebox array was to alert them the moment that Lu Yin or Awe Gate exited it, the elders promptly guaranteed that the two would never be able to leave.

Chang Tu did not argue. Unable to leave? He knew that was a joke. The Longevity Civilization did not possess a sourcebox array that was capable of imprisoning an Immortal, let alone two individuals who could be considered powerful even among Immortals.

While the Array Grandmasters were setting up the sourcebox array, Chang Tian pestered Awe Gate, trying to reminisce with her.

Even if Awe Gate did not have as low of an opinion of the man as she had once had, waxing nostalgic with him was clearly not going to happen.

“Xiao Zhi, at least let me see our daughter. How is she doing? What is her cultivation level? Has she married? I want to know everything!” Chang Tian pleaded.

His attitude left the Array Grandmasters dumbfounded. Naturally, they understood the identity of the man, and seeing him act in such a manner led to rampant speculation about who Awe Gate and Lu Yin might possibly be.

For the time being, Lu Yin and Awe Gate were both disguised as members of the Longevity Civilization, and the difference in strength between them and the Array Grandmasters prevented the elders from even sensing that the two were from a foreign megaverse.

Awe Gate quickly grew impatient. “She is doing very well. You don’t need to worry abut her. Her cultivation is also quite good.”

“What does she look like now? Is she beautiful? As beautiful as you?”

“Shut up! I told you that there’s no need for you to worry.”

“Then, is she married?”

“Not yet.”

“Is there someone she likes?”

“You can leave now.”

“But I want to see what my daughter looks like.”

“Scram.”

Overhearing the conversation from nearby, Lu Yin really could not hold back any longer. Awe Gate naturally had a bad temper, and that meant that, the more Chang Tian pestered her, the more irritated the woman became. Her improved opinion of him did not really change anything.

Lu Yin raised a hand and created an image in the air, replicating Qing Yun’s appearance.

“Senior, this is your daughter.”

Chang Tian stared at the image of Qing Yun, feeling overcome with emotion. He wanted to reach out and touch her face, but it was only an image and not a real person.

“Good, very good. This is my daughter… Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Suddenly, Chang Tian’s eyes locked onto Lu Yin, his gaze growing sharp. “What’s your relationship with my daughter?”

Lu Yin blinked. “You could say that we are friends.”

“Just friends?” Chang Tian’s eyes grew even sharper.

Awe Gate snapped, “Get lost!”

Chang Tian turned to leave, but before he did, he gave Lu Yin a doubtful last glance, as though he wanted to see through the younger man.

Lu Yin was speechless. No good deed goes unpunished.

It took several months for the sourcebox array to be completed, but even during that time, Lu Yin and Awe Gate lived within its bounds. They each had their own courtyard, separated by a fair distance. Still, for cultivators, they might as well have been living side by side.

“Senior Awe Gate, the Longevity Civilization also has sourcebox arrays. It seems that cultivation civilizations throughout the Aevum Inch have, to varying degrees, studied sourcebox arrays.”

“That is certainly possible. Sourceboxes are scattered throughout the Aevum Inch, carrying power sealed away since ancient times. Once such sealed power is discovered, whether a civilization follows cultivation or technology, they will want to make use of it.

“Living beings cultivate from nothing to something, while sourceboxes are inherently destructive. Naturally, civilizations are drawn to study them. I just don’t know whether any civilization has developed sourcebox arrays to a level comparable to a fishing civilization. If such a civilization exists, it would be terrifying,” Awe Gate said. “Given the vastness of the Aevum Inch, any form of power could elevate a civilization to its peak. Let us hope we never encounter one.”

Soon enough, Chang Tian returned, wanting to chat with Awe Gate again, only to be refused.

After a few days, he came back again, this time asking to speak with Lu Yin. But the man was still turned away by Awe Gate.

As time passed, Awe Gate grew increasingly annoyed. She clenched her broken Awecloud in a hand, resisting the temptation to strike.

“Don’t be angry, Xiao Zhi. I came to deliver a meeting gift this time.”

“A meeting gift? For whom?”

“Our daughter, of course.”

“There is no need.”

Chang Tian shamelessly persisted. “I’ve already seen our daughter, so how can I not give her even the smallest gift for our first meeting? That would make me a true bastard. Don’t worry, I’ll leave as soon as I give it to you.”

Awe Gate shrugged. “Fine, give it to me.”

Chang Tian carefully took out a piece of a vine and handed it to Awe Gate.

Just as she reached out to take it, Chang Tu emerged from the void, shouting, “Chang Tian, what are you doing?”

Chang Tian hurried to shove the vine into Awe Gate’s hand, muttering, “Put it away! Hurry!”

Awe Gate was puzzled, but she immediately placed the thing in her cosmic ring.

Chang Tu stretched out a hand. “Girl, give that back to me!”

Awe Gate did not move.

Chang Tian stepped in front of her. “Senior, that is mine. I will give it to whomever I choose.”

Chang Tu snapped, “Do you have any idea what a grave mistake you are making? Is that something that you can simply hand out?”

“I am giving it to my own daughter.”

“That is still unacceptable! Unless your daughter joins our Longevity Civilization, that cannot be given away.”

“I am willing to go to Ancestor and accept punishment,” Chang Tian stated in a deep voice.

Chang Tu glared at the man, and then looked at Awe Gate. After another moment, he flicked his sleeve. “Do as you wish. Go to Ancestor.”

With that, the old man left.

Chang Tian let out a breath of relief.

“What is this thing?” Awe Gate asked curiously.

Chang Tian smiled. “It’s nothing much, just a small piece of the Longevity Vine. Take it with you, give it to Qing Yun for me, and apologize to her on my behalf. I haven’t done my duty as her father. If in the future—and I do mean if—there is a chance for us to meet, I will not ask her to call me ‘father.’ I merely hope that she will not hold a grudge against me.”

With that, Chang Tian also left.
