“Big brother, can I pet your cat?” the child asked curiously. At his feet, Little Yellow was still on guard, though not against Tuo Lin. The dog was wary of the cat. It simply looked too fierce, and it was clear at a glance that it would not be good to provoke it.
The child’s grandfather scolded him, “Go over there and stop making trouble!”
Tuo Lin smiled. “Of course you can.”
As he spoke, he picked the cat up and handed it over to the child, muttering, “This cat is very gentle and would never hurt a child. Right, kitty?”
The child was a little scared, but he wanted to pet the cat more than ever.
The cat rolled its eyes. The grandfather did not see it, but the child did, and it was absolutely delighted. What a cute kitty!
Lu Yin was speechless. That cat was a person, though he had no idea who it might be.
However, that rice seedling should be Yan Ruyu.
No matter how Lu Yin looked at things, Tuo Lin’s companions were a bizarre combination.
The courtyard soon grew quite lively. Tuo Lin chatted with the grandfather in a friendly manner, showing great curiosity regarding Manifest City. The cat leapt onto the wall, refusing to be touched any further. Little Yellow kept circling the area, constantly trying to prevent the child from approaching the cat, instinctively sensing that the cat was dangerous. The child happily ignored the dog and insisted on petting the cat. A light breeze passed by, causing the rice seedling to sway once. The entire scene was strangely harmonious.
Lu Yin watched while listening in on the conversation below. Suddenly, he picked up on something very wrong. It seemed that he had overlooked something all along, but what exactly was it?
He stared downward. Tuo Lin was still happily chatting away with the old man, and the topic of their conversation had turned to reading. The old man went inside to retrieve a book for Tuo Lin to read, and Tuo Lin treated it like a treasure, immediately started reading.
Lu Yin’s eyes flashed. He had found the issue: this grandfather and grandson seemed to be completely unfamiliar with Manifest City.
That could not be right. How could they be unfamiliar with their own city?
Manifest City was certainly vast, but the people living in it spent their entire lives within the one city. A lifetime was more than enough to learn a great deal about Manifest City, even ignoring the fact that some families had lived in the city for generations. There had been dozens, even hundreds of generations that had all lived in Manifest City. In theory, every family should know the city inside out, but this grandfather and grandson pair only knew about their immediate surroundings.
When Lu Yin thought back to the people that he had observed with Willforce, everything had appeared to be perfectly normal. People went about their lives, talking, quarreling, conducting trade, and spending their time in the passing of the most ordinary days while living as mortals. Occasionally, there were even schemes and plots, but overall, things were perfectly normal for mortal life.
However, in retrospect, it became clear that the city’s inhabitants only moved about within a fixed range. Their lives had been so normal that Lu Yin had never thought beyond that.
An ordinary person could spend their entire life within a single village. That was perfectly normal. Manifest City was so massive that each small corner of it might as well be a small city. The fact that the ordinary people never left a given area would have never normally caught Lu Yin’s attention. But if it was true that people never left their assigned region of the city, then there was indeed a problem.
These were clearly normal humans, so why was there such a restriction?
“Kitty, kitty!” the child shouted.
The cat leapt into the tree and saw Lu Yin. A smug smile appeared on the beast’s face, and it suddenly sprang forward, swiping at Lu Yin with a paw to knock him down. You go play with that child instead.
The cat had long since realized that this bird was suspicious. It had been staring at the events in the courtyard all along, and it was clearly a transformed person.
Most of the outsiders in Manifest City had fled during the last disturbance, but this bird was definitely human.
This will teach you to keep staring!
Lu Yin was completely unphased. Willforce swept out, and the cat fell out of the tree, stiffly dropping right into the child's arms.
The cat was stunned. What just happened? What happened?
The bird had not moved at all, so why had the cat fallen? Had its foot slipped? It wanted to run, but the child held it tightly while laughing happily.
Little Yellow barked even louder, while the grandfather and Tuo Lin burst into laughter.
Lu Yin opened his wings and flew away, leaving Manifest City.
Several days later, Tuo Lin finally stepped out of Manifest City, accompanied by Hui Can and Yan Ruyu.
As soon as they left Manifest City and saw Lu Yin, all three quickly bowed. “Greetings, Master.”
“Greetings, Master.”
Lu Yin offered silent acknowledgment as he observed the three. “So, all of you entered Manifest City? How did it feel?”
Tuo Lin excitedly replied, “Master, Manifest City is wonderful!. Everyone inside is so kind!”
Lu Yin looked at Yan Ruyu, who respectfully said, “Little Ruyu feels that Manifest City is beautiful and also very ordinary.”
Finally, Lu Yin looked at Hui Can, who grinned. “It was… pretty good.”
That wild cat must have been Hui Can. Lu Yin saw right through his disciple. “Tuo Lin, are you a human in there?”
Tuo Lin nodded. “Yes, I am human. Master, you must be human in there too, right?”
That sounded strange, and somehow like it was an insult.
Hui Can glanced at Lu Yin. Human? Of course not!
Aside from Tuo Lin, it seemed that no one kept a human form when entering Manifest City. The only question was what their master had transformed into, as no one had told the disciples.
Lu Yin coughed. “Tuo Lin, do your master a favor.”
Tuo Lin instantly grew even more excited. “Master, please tell me! Your disciple will do his utmost to complete it!”
As he spoke, he glanced to the side. “Little Ruyu, Master is finally making use of me! Mm, I'm happy too, Little Ruyu! Let's work hard together.”
Hui Can rolled his eyes.
Lu Yin looked at Manifest City. “On my behalf, speak with everyone inside Manifest City. Find out if any of them have seen the entire city. See what each of them focuses on, what they care about, what they are attached to, and what they want to obtain.”
Tuo Lin did not understand, but no matter what Lu Yin asked, Tuo Lin would definitely do it. “Alright, Master. Your disciple will speak with every single person in Manifest City and get clear answers to all of this.”
Lu Yin patted Tuo Lin on the shoulder. He had seen something different in Manifest City this time, and this might be Tuo Lin’s opportunity. Each person had their own opportunities, and it was very possible that Tuo Lin's lay within Manifest City.
What was the greatest difference between Tuo Lin and everyone else? The first thing that Lu Yin thought of was reading. Tuo Lin had read far too many books, to the point where he had nearly lost his mind while doing so. Could it be that, simply because he had read so much, he was able to stay human?
“Hui Can.”
“Your disciple is here.”
“Stay with your senior brother Tuo Lin and protect him.”
Hui Can was speechless. He had planned to leave. It had become clear that Manifest City had nothing to do with him, but after receiving Lu Yin’s order, Hui Can could no longer leave. He could only reply, “Your disciple understands.”
Tuo Lin excitedly rushed back inside Manifest City. He had already decided that, unless some important reason came up, he would not leave again. There were many people living in the city, and speaking with them all would take time.
Hui Can's heart sank to the bottom. How long will this take?
Watching the three return to Manifest City, Lu Yin turned around and made his way to the Crimson Starshade Megaverse.
Tuo Lin's unique nature meant that Lu Yin did not need to enter Manifest City for the time being. He could learn more through Tuo Lin. For the moment, he could focus on building the wall in his heart.
So far, he had always worked on building the wall higher in the Trio, but this time, Lu Yin intended to do so in Crimson Starshade to see if he could gain a different perspective from the flawed Path of Dispassion that was the prevailing cultivation method.
While there was a correct way to walk a path, even the wrong way was still a path. Despite there being no doubt that the current Path of Dispassion was flawed, there were still people who had not been led astray by it. Their perseverance was enough to further strengthen Lu Yin’s mental state.
Right, Xiang Siyu.
Lu Yin changed course and went to the Nine Odysseys Megaverse. He had decided to take Xiang Siyu along with him. Her luck might not be enough to influence a colossal existence like the entire Death Megaverse, but if he took her to Crimson Starshade, perhaps a little of her good luck would help him to discover something, such as some trace of Ji He.
Lu Yin had never managed to find either Ji He or Rang Yu, and Bei Xia had also been hidden away. While the chances of finding any of them through pure luck was extremely small, Lu Yin could at least treat the matter as having someone to accompany him while he traveled across the mountains and rivers.
“Are you asking me out?” In the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, Xiang Siyu gave Lu Yin a strange look.
He silently stared back. “…I'm not asking you out. I want to borrow your luck.”
A trace of hesitation appeared on Xiang Siyu's beautiful face.
“Is there a problem?” Lu Yin asked and then quickly added, “If there is, then forget it. It's fine.”
Xiang Siyu said, “I was just wondering if following you might make my own cultivation easier. I've been stuck at the peak of Dukkha for so many years, unable to move forward even one step. Not even using the reset of a megaverse has been enough to help me step into the Immortal realm, while you…” She looked Lu Yin up and down. “You've improved really fast.”
Lu Yin shrugged. “I’m still not an Immortal myself.”
Xiang Siyu pursed her lips. “But your combat power has never stopped increasing. You already far surpass what a normal person can imagine possible.”
That was perfectly true, and yet Lu Yin was also certain that he could still improve further. The main reason for this was the motes of green light. Without those, his physical strength would not have continuously improved, and his ability to endure greater amounts of other powers would also be limited.
The reason why cultivation realms existed at all was because each realm possessed an upper limit of power. Only by breaking through that limit could one surpass that realm. If there was no limit, what would be the meaning of cultivation realms?
Lu Yin was the only person in all of history to have achieved such impressive battle power with his level of cultivation. He was absolutely unique.
Xiang Siyu smiled. “Lord Lu, I told you long ago that you can use me whenever you want. There's no need to be so polite. Let's go.”
Lu Yin had always felt like he was unable to quite keep up with Xiang Siyu's manner of speech. How could a woman phrase things in such an awkward way?
He took Xiang Siyu to Crimson Starshade. They sat atop a small raft, accompanied by a jug of cloudy wine and several plates of snacks as they drifted downstream. The white portion of the wall in Lu Yin’s heart embraced the universe while the black side did the opposite.
He wanted to see what kind of changes Crimson Starshade could bring to his mental state.
Time continued to pass, and Crimson Starshade did not disappoint Lu Yin. Here, he experienced a completely different perspective of life compared to the Human Trio.
Some people held fast to their convictions despite the overwhelming societal pressure. They preferred to give up cultivation than abandon their emotions. Some had already accepted their lives and deaths and were simply waiting for the day when Hong Xia and Lu Yin completely fell out with each other, which was the day that the Crimson Starshade Megaverse would collapse. Others were utterly terrified of death and were frantically preparing for something.
All things in existence had countless forms. For something to exist, it had its own reasons.
Lu Yin took a sip of wine while looking at a person in the distance who was cursing as Lu Yin floated by and then smiled.
Xiang Siyu found this reaction odd. “He's cursing you, and yet you can still smile?”
Lu Yin said, “If he curses me, then it means that he cares about and remembers me. In a way, that's also a contribution to me.”
Xiang Siyu was speechless. “If having a breakthrough in one's mental state turns you into this, I'd rather never break through.”
After a pause, she added, “Are you able to act like a normal person?”
Lu Yin retorted, “Am I not normal?”
Xiang Siyu sighed and rested her chin in her hand. “Not in the slightest.”
Lu Yin gave a small smile. “You've enjoyed good luck and were even born with everything, so of course the crucial final step is difficult for you. Have you ever thought that all the potential bad luck from the first part of your life might have accumulated in this final step?”
Xiang Siyu rolled her eyes. “Of course, but what can I do about it?”
Lu Yin looked up. “I'm sharing your good luck, which means that I am also bearing your bad luck.”
Xiang Siyu blinked and stared at Lu Yin. “Lord Lu, I'm clearly the one helping you, and yet you manage to phrase it as though you're helping me.”
“Perhaps.”
“Now I want to curse you too.”
“Go ahead.”
“Freak.”
“Thank you.”
Xiang Siyu rolled her eyes again and took a sip of wine.
