Seeing that Devouring Trace was still locked in a fierce battle against Old Sixth and Ji, Lu Yin went to join the fight. He repeatedly unleashed Endless Recall, the Yan Gate's First Needle, the Cosmic Art, and more. His goal was to wear away Devouring Trace's Stillness.
Devouring Trace would not let any of them go, and they could not let the Abyssal go either. If Devouring Trace escaped, the only fate that awaited them all was being pursued by the Death Megaverse.
This battle was destined to remain unknown to any who were not present. Either they would kill Devouring Trace, die, or run away. There was no other choice.
With this readily apparent to everyone, there could only be one reason why Devouring Trace continued to fight so fiercely even now: it was confident that it could kill them.
It possessed far more Stillness than any of them had imagined. This was by no means as simple as the Stillness supplied by Nethersea Suppression Dead End.
Right. Lu Yin suddenly thought of something. "We’ve always believed that Devouring Trace possesses the smallest Stillness reserves, but is that for its complete form or after it’s sent out its various fragments?"
This question caused Old Sixth's movements to hesitate for a moment. Caught unprepared, the toad was slapped by Devouring Trace and sent flying with a clearly visible palm print on their face.
It was deeply humiliating, but this was not the time to care about such things. Old Sixth stared at Devouring Trace. Was Devouring Trace’s Stillness reserves the smallest when it was complete, or after it had scattered into multiple fragments?
They had automatically assumed that those rumors were about Devouring Trace’s full strength and had never even considered any other possibility. But what if that was not the case?
Each of Devouring Trace's fragments only possessed the combat strength of an Immortal being. Even if it was only one of the weakest Immortal beings, that could not be a small amount of Stillness. So then…?
"It is after it has scattered its fragments." Ji spoke for the first time, and its voice sounded neither male nor female, but perfectly neutral.
Lu Yin and Old Sixth both looked over at the black creature. "Are you sure?"
"I am," Ji said.
"Why didn’t you say so before?" Old Sixth jumped in anger. Had they known this earlier, they would not have wanted to fight. Since the Death Megaverse had managed to scheme against Obscura this time, Devouring Trace’s fragments must have been recombined to restore its full strength. Only heaven knew how much Stillness a complete Devouring Trace possessed, and on top of that, Nethersea Suppression had even given it even more.
That was a terrifying thought.
It was no wonder why this fellow was so confident that it could kill them all. From the very beginning, they had failed to clearly see their enemy.
Ji calmly replied, "If I had said anything earlier, you would have fled."
Old Sixth and Lu Yin stared blankly at Ji. This fellow was very cunning. On top of that, it felt as if this creature had even stronger motivations to kill Devouring Trace than the two of them. Why else would the creature have joined forces with them to attack Devouring Trace while knowing its true strength?
"Hmph! Ji, how do you know?" Devouring Trace asked.
Ji did not answer.
"Forget it. There is no harm in you knowing." Devouring Trace's voice was deep and hoarse. "The Stillness that I possess in my complete form is no less than that of Dark Prisonbone. It is just that, from the very beginning, the Death Megaverse allowed me to join and promised me the position of Abyssal on the condition that I split apart my fragments to help them capture Immortal beings. Why else do you think I would be willing to break myself apart?
"You have the honor of seeing me in my complete form! I will send each of you on your way."
Lu Yin looked at Devouring Trace. "When did you join the Death Megaverse?"
"I cannot remember the exact time. Is it important?" Devouring Trace said.
Of course it was important. If it had joined after Hong Xia accepted his mission from Obscura, there was nothing to say, but if Devouring Trace had joined the Death Megaverse before, then things were far more interesting. That could only mean that Ba Se had clearly known that Devouring Trace was an Abyssal yet still sent Hong Xia to kill it. The key was that Hong Xia had not known.
However, if Devouring Trace had joined the Death Megaverse before Hong Xia accepted his mission, it must have already started cultivating Stillness, and it would have been impossible for Hong Xia to not notice such a detail.
There had been traces of Stillness in the Soft Megaverse, but that did not prove that Devouring Trace had possessed Stillness before Hong Xia accepted his mission. It was also possible that, after Hong Xia had failed to kill it, it had joined the Death Megaverse and only then begun cultivating Stillness.
Lu Yin still could not determine the true order of events. Although this was Hong Xia's affair, the truth could reveal Ba Se's thoughts.
"It is time to send you on your way." Devouring Trace's body expanded, and even more protrusions emerged to attack Lu Yin and the others.
They could only continue to dodge the attacks. Receiving a blow from any part of Devouring Trace's body was the same as a full-force blow.
Not one individual left. They all needed to kill Devouring Trace. The battle had already reached a critical point, so they could only risk everything.
Time passed, but there was no news from the main battlefield. No one even knew which direction the other battlefield was in. Their own battle had moved around continuously, and they had also been dragged some distance away while trapped within Devouring Trace's Inner Cosmos.
After an unknown amount of time, Devouring Trace's Stillness still had not been exhausted. Old Sixth was panting heavily. The toad was exhausted.
Lu Yin was also tired. More than half of his divine energy had been consumed earlier, and his Stillness was nearly depleted as well. The First Needle and Endless Recall might be able to strike Devouring Trace every time he used them, but so what? Neither could break through its defenses.
Ji's Stillness had visibly decreased.
"This cannot go on. We still can’t even see its limits," Lu Yin said.
Old Sixth grimaced. Giving up at this point in time would be too much of a pity, and Devouring Trace would not allow them to escape easily.
"Let’s go all out. It shouldn’t have much Stillness left."
"How do we go all out?" Lu Yin asked.
Old Sixth said, "Each of us releases our strongest power."
Lu Yin looked at Ji. It agreed.
He then glanced at Old Sixth. "Speaking of which, since both of you are Abyssals, you should at least be about equal to this thing. Why are you in such a miserable state?"
Old Sixth angrily shouted, "I am still young!"
Lu Yin was momentarily stunned, and he said no more.
Within the Seven-Treasure Anuras, Old Sixth was indeed the youngest Immortal.
Dark weapons filled the cosmos, as one after another appeared.
Old Sixth raised their head, a fierce grin on their face. "Come! Let me show you Lord Sixth’s ultimate move!"
As the toad spoke, they tightened their grip on the steel fork and released all of their Stillness. The toad’s entire body looked like it was covered in pitch-black paper, and that layer flickered with a cold gleam that came from the steel fork itself.
As a flash of light swept by, the steel fork stabbed forward, as if to pierce the sky itself. "Yaksha!"
This was the ultimate technique that Thousand Machinations had specifically tailored for Old Sixth.
At the same time, Ji conjured a dark passage. Eerily, cube after cube hung suspended above the passage, though no one knew what they were.
Lu Yin fully released his divine energy. His Stillness was almost entirely depleted, so he could no longer use any Stillness battle techniques. All he could use at this point was divine energy.
The green divine energy condensed into a sword. It moved with a single slash as he unleashed Sword Planting.
The sword-testing stone raised its longsword, and endless sword-brilliance spread out, its way of the sword encompassing heaven and earth.
All three attacks struck Devouring Trace, shattering the cosmos itself. For a moment, nothing could be seen clearly, somewhat reminiscent of the main battlefield.
First, a dark steel fork pierced into Devouring Trace. Immediately after, the green Sword Planting fell from above, divine energy separating the darkness. As for Ji's passage with multiple cubes hanging over it, no one knew what it did, and it vanished almost instantly.
Cracks appeared on Devouring Trace's pitch-black body, and the blackness that covered it faded a great deal.
"Has this fellow gone stupid? Why didn’t it defend itself at all?" Old Sixth asked in shock.
Lu Yin looked at Ji. "What did you do?"
Old Sixth also looked over at Ji, who calmly replied, "Nothing much. I merely swapped its attack."
Lu Yin and Old Sixth were rendered speechless. Swapped? Could that even be used in this context? They had heard of swapping objects, but never of swapping attacks. Could this fellow resonate with the cosmic law Swap?
"Again!" Ji's voice grew a little louder as it again attacked with its dark passage with multiple cubes hanging from it.
This time, Lu Yin deliberately watched those cubes.
However, this time, Devouring Trace's attack appeared. Its entire body changed form and attacked the dark passage.
"What happened to the swap that you promised?" Old Sixth cried out in alarm. They had already unleashed Yaksha, but their attack had missed. Had they known that Devouring Trace would do something different from before, the toad definitely would have held back a bit. Their attack had been entirely wasted.
Lu Yin's Sword Planting had also missed.
Ji retreated. "Swapping requires specific conditions. It saw through those conditions, so I could not swap it."
"That fast? I wasn’t even able to see what happened!" Old Sixth shouted while hurrying to dodge Devouring Trace's attack. Even so, the toad’s back was struck once, creating a deep and bleeding wound.
Lu Yin was nearly struck, but fortunately, the sword-testing stone blocked it by moving in front of him. Devouring Trace's attacks could not harm the sword-testing stone at all.
Ji dodged just before the attack arrived, remaining unharmed.
Given how tangled and advanced the battle was, every step taken was vitally important. Ji's failed swap caused Lu Yin and the toad’s attacks to miss. Not only did they waste their strength for nothing, but Old Sixth had also been wounded.
As for Devouring Trace, while more than half of its Stillness had been consumed, what remained was still more than what Old Sixth, Lu Yin, and the others possessed.
The battle had become one-sided. Whether it was Old Sixth, Lu Yin, or Ji, none of their attacks could do anything to Devouring Trace. They were being steadily hunted down by the Abyssal. Lu Yin was in the best condition, as the sword-testing stone kept blocking attacks for him, whereas Old Sixth and Ji had long since been overwhelmed.
Ji, in particular, actually hid behind Lu Yin and chased after him, trying to use Lu Yin's sword-testing stone to block attacks aimed at it.
Old Sixth moved to do the same.
A ridiculous scene played out in the Aevum Inch. Devouring Trace wielded a pitch-black power while attacking frantically, pursuing Lu Yin and the others. As for the three being targeted, they were clearly capable of scattering and fleeing, but because they needed to kill Devouring Trace, they had no choice but to stay together, just for the one-in-ten-thousand chance of victory.
Their desperation created the current situation. No one would retreat. No, no one could retreat. The initiative lay solely in Devouring Trace's hands.
"This won’t work. Sooner or later, we are going to be exhausted, and then it will kill us," Old Sixth commented while hiding behind Lu Yin.
Lu Yin kept dodging Devouring Trace's attacks, though the sword-testing stone stayed in front of him to block the attacks. He was actually growing afraid that the sword-testing stone would not be able to hold on and would eventually collapse.
He had been moved by the sword-testing stone's determination to protect humanity.
Ji did not say another word, just staying as close to Lu Yin as Old Sixth, both of them focusing on him. Every time Devouring Trace attacked, Ji always managed to find just the right angle to gain the greatest protection at the smallest cost. Watching this gave Old Sixth a headache of frustration.
They were clearly stronger than Ji, but when it came to hiding, the toad truly could not compare to the black creature.
Lu Yin asked in a low voice, "What do you two think we should do?"
"Scatter and run?" Old Sixth threw out an option.
No one responded. Everyone had a reason to need to kill Devouring Trace.
Old Sixth's rolled their eyes. "Fine! Since we all want to kill this thing, we need to stop hiding things. Just admit how much strength you have left, and we can analyze our options."
Lu Yin and Ji still said nothing.
"Are you two still hiding things even now? Don’t keep them hidden to your deaths and take them to your graves!" Old Sixth scolded angrily. After speaking, the toad suddenly thought of something and turned to stare at Lu Yin. "Human skeleton, you don’t think that you are safe, do you? I’ll tell you right now, the sword-testing stone cannot protect you forever. Or are you maybe counting on Obscura's protection? Obscura might have some means, but that depends on the opponent. This is one of the Death Megaverse’s Abyssals, a supreme expert. Obscura's methods simply cannot protect you. Do not think that you can avoid this!"
