As for the Divine Palace, it was an absolute colossus of an organization that bestowed the title of god. Every living being who wanted to become a god needed to first receive the Divine Palace's recognition and blessing before they could receive the means of a god. Gods were divided into combat gods, enlightenment gods, transmission gods, spirit-communing gods, and many others. There were a great many types.
In this place, while the word “god” still sounded lofty and exalted, it lacked the concept of omnipotence. Even mortals, provided that they could pay a sufficient price, could force the gods to do certain things.
Also, the price that the gods required most was time.
Every living being had its own time, with mortals having the time of mortals.
Time itself had been quantified.
Lu Yin stared into the depths of space. To quantify time, one needed time. This led him to think of the way the River of Aeons’ main stream had thrown time into chaos in the region of the Aevum Inch that he had escaped from. What was happening in this new region was that time was being harvested.
He was also reminded of Wang Wen's words, commenting on how that particular region of the Aevum Inch was extremely chaotic. Even a fishing civilization like the Divine Realm had failed and been forced to retreat. That entire region was completely different from where Lu Yin found himself.
It seemed he absolutely needed to carefully learn about his new location.
Lu Yin agreed to grant the creatures time and told them to wait nearby.
This species did not question him at all, as they were not qualified to do so. In particular, after they saw Lu Yin completely vanish after taking but one step, only to reappear with another step, they clearly understood that they had never surrounded this being; he simply had not left.
All along, the initiative had been in Lu Yin's hands.
Watching the creatures move away, Lu Yin raised his hand. Manifest City sat in his palm. It was very small, to the point where it was almost impossible to see.
Who could imagine that something so small had encompassed and carried two megaverses, the distance of a years’ travel between them, even a branch of the River of Aeons away?
Lu Yin entered Manifest City to look for Green Lotus and the others.
It was only at this moment that he was finally able to clearly see the state of the Tianyuan and the Nine Odysseys Megaverse. The two megaverses had been completely changed by the chaos of the power of the Primacy Paths. Living creatures, regional structures, and everything had changed. After all, even time and space had been altered.
Countless people had been changed to some degree. Some had aged, some had grown younger, some had lost their power, and some had fallen all the way to becoming mere mortals again. Even more had been buried in the earth.
No one had been able to avoid the catastrophe. This calamity had been like a natural disaster for cultivators.
All of humanity’s Immortals gathered together.
"I never imagined that my own power would become so unfamiliar to me. At that moment, it was as though my power had gained its own mind and wanted to break away from me," Mister Mu said with a sigh.
Green Lotus looked solemn. "Karma went completely out of control, and my Heavenly Karmic Macrocosm disappeared."
Lu Yin’s brows shot up. "Senior, your karma is gone?"
Green Lotus nodded.
Lu Yin clenched a fist. What a terrifying method. When going against the power of the Primacy Paths, what one faced was not an enemy, but rather the Overlords, and that meant facing the very source of power that was cultivated by the Overlords themselves. If such a being wanted to take that power away, they could do so. How could anyone resist something like that?
Master Qing Cao sighed. "This is what our predecessors of the Nine Ramparts once faced. Upon first seeing it, we collapsed at the first touch."
Ancient God spoke up in a low voice. "That is because we know nothing about this power. I believe that, if we are given time, we will definitely be able to fight back."
After a moment, he added, "At the very least, we will not fail so miserably."
Jiu Wen took a sip of wine. "How much of your own power do all of you have left?"
Green Lotus answered first., "Less than ten percent."
Mister Mu replied, "About the same."
Chang Tian and Awe Gate exchanged glances before nodding. "We are about the same as well. Fortunately, my sight power was not depleted at all."
That stirred something in Lu Yin. "Not all power originates from the Primacy Paths. Or rather, not all power was taken back by the Primacy Paths. Some powers may undergo certain changes after being born from a Primacy Path, such as Senior Chang Tian's sight power. This might be a way to resist the Primacy Paths."
Chu Songyun asked, "Master, your karmic chain?"
This question prompted everyone to look down at Lu Yin's wrist. This was the Trio’s greatest loss. Lu Yin's true body now had a complete karmic chain.
Instantly, a new layer of pressure fell upon everyone. Even with an expert like Jiu Wen joining their civilization and the addition of technological weapons from the Radiance's End's Civilization, it was impossible to make up for the loss of Lu Yin's karmic chain being complete.
He had become human civilization's ultimate trump card.
Lu Yin raised his wrist. "For the time being, I can’t do anything at all, but I will definitely find a way to reduce this karmic chain."
He had already created miracles countless times in the past, but this particular one was too out of reach. How many living beings, across the unending years, had sought to find a way to deal with their karmic chains? Despite that, all of them had failed without question.
Lu Yin looked around at everyone. "Don’t forget, everyone, that when the power of the Primacy Paths was stripped away, or to put things more bluntly, taken back to where it came from, that it still counts as taking action. How many beings died because of what happened? Is it possible that those responsible don’t have karmic chains?"
Everyone was roused by his words. That was true. Why did it seem that the beings of the Primacy Paths were unafraid of increasing their karmic chains?
People exchanged glances.
From within Lu Yin's body, You Che spoke up, "That is something that the Nine Ramparts considered in the past as well. However, I know neither their conclusions not their reasons for going to war. The only thing that is certain is that the powers of the Primacy Paths are truly not subject to karmic chains."
Lu Yin asked, "Is it possible that karmic chains actually stem from the existence that controls karma, that karmic chains are deliberately used to control the Aevum Inch? Is it possible that they don’t originate from the cosmos itself?"
"That being represents the cosmos itself," You Che replied, though no one else could hear his words.
Their conversation continued for some time. Lu Yin told Green Lotus and the others to recover their own power while he went out to explore their new region and see what he could learn about the nearby Aevum Inch.
He did not send his true body out, but rather his divine energy clone.
His true body had a completed karmic chain, so it was better for it to remain within Manifest City.
After all, his divine energy clone had been completely unaffected by the recent chaos. Like sight power, divine energy had not been touched by the power of the Primacy Paths.
Given the amount of divine energy that his clone possessed, there was no need to fear anything that he might encounter while exploring.
You Che currently had You Wu’s form, a bit of seaweed growing in Manifest City. He stayed beneath the bridge. No matter who it was, as long as You Che was willing, he could speak with them. He did not necessarily have to communicate with Lu Yin’s true body.
At this point, Lu Yin’s true body was no different from everyone else in Manifest City, as all of its heartforce had been consumed.
"Do you still want to seize Manifest City?" Lu Yin asked. He was sitting on a desolate planet while staring off into the distance, searching for cosmic civilizations.
You Che replied, "Of course, but doing so will be very difficult. The heartforce has completely disappeared. If I want to control Manifest City, the most direct method would be to replace all of your statues in the city with my own. That little disciple of yours is too ruthless. He led the people of the city to practically worship you. You cannot be replaced.
"Lu Yin, how did you manage to obtain such a disciple? He is filial, simple, and not afraid of hard work."
Thinking of Tuo Lin, Lu Yin smiled. "Is he not a great deal like you back then?"
You Che fell silent.
Lu Yin had seen You Che's past. Originally, You Che really had indeed been very similar to Tuo Lin. It was only after becoming Young Master Che that he had changed. However, only half of the responsibility for that change lay with him, while the other half lay with the other disciples of the Fifth Rampart.
Lu Yin asked, "Why did you say that we can never break free from Obscura?"
You Che sighed. "The affairs of the world are unpredictable. I schemed for so long, yet I never considered that, when you took control of Manifest City, you would face the descent of the powers of the Primacy Paths. I suppose that I can only call myself unlucky.
"How much do you know about the powers of the Primacy Paths?"
"Almost nothing," Lu Yin said very frankly.
You Che’s tone grew bitter. "I do not know much myself, but I do know that the Nine Ramparts' greatest enemy back then were not the various civilizations that attacked them, but rather the Primacy Paths. Obscura is the spokesman of the Primacy Paths.
"The Primacy Paths exist within the trunk of the cosmic Mother Tree, whereas all of us live on its branches. Therefore, they need a spokesman on the branches, which is how Obscura was born. That also means that, unless you eliminate the Primacy Paths, you will never be free of Obscura."
Lu Yin understood. "But why was divine energy unaffected by the power of the Primacy Paths? Divine energy should also originate from the Primacy Paths."
"Perhaps it was created by a certain being. I do not know. But the ultimate truth is surprisingly simple: the source of all power lies within the trunk of the cosmic Mother Tree. If you want to surpass the Primacy Paths and prevent them from affecting your own power, you must enter the trunk."
"Is that what the Nine Ramparts believed back then?"
"I do not know. My level and status within the Nine Ramparts were insufficient for me to know much. Just like how I did not know that the Mirari Realm in your Tianyuan Megaverse actually contained a contingency left by the Nine Ramparts, which helped you avoid a disaster."
This reminded Lu Yin of what he had seen at that time, as well as those wise eyes.
They suddenly overlapped with a message that Ancestor Shan had left on one of the plates of armor. Throughout that ancient toad’s life, there were three beings that he had admired most. The first was the one who was everywhere, their name unknown and their form unseen. They watched the rise and fall of cosmic civilizations, observing the entirety of the Aevum Inch.
The second was the Nine Ramparts’ Wargod Pan.
The last was the one who shifted the vast sea, whose wisdom was like a platter. Their existence was not spoken, as it was not convenient to reveal.
To be admired by Ancestor Shan showed just how great that individual’s wisdom must have been. Such wisdom was hard to find throughout all of time.
Those eyes Lu Yin had seen reminded him of that being.
"Who arranged that contingency?" Lu Yin asked.
You Che thought for a moment. "If we consider who could possibly see so far into the future, there is only one that I can think of from the Nine Ramparts: Mister Zizai."1
"Mister Zizai?" This name instantly gave Lu Yin the impression of an immortal sage.
You Che did not seem to want to remember the man, but he still explained, "Mister Zizai was from the First Rampart, but he constantly traveled throughout the entire Nine Ramparts. What he liked doing most was…" He paused before finally finishing, "Teaching."
Lu Yin grew puzzled. "Teaching cultivation?"
"Not exactly. A more accurate description would be pointing out flaws. Mister Zizai was known as the smartest person in the Nine Ramparts. He dabbled a bit in absolutely everything. No matter what someone might have cultivated, as long as he saw it, he could always find some flaw with their cultivation."
"Isn’t that quite good?" Lu Yin became increasingly certain that the contingency in the Mirari Realm had been left by this Mister Zizai.
You Che sighed. "But no one was willing to face him, because the way he looked at you made you feel like a complete idiot."
Lu Yin once again pictured those wise eyes. Is that really how it was?
Those eyes had been very kind. Was it possible that the contingency had not been left by Mister Zizai?
"You have not faced him, so you cannot understand that feeling. I was known as Young Master Che, one of the most talented of my entire generation, but in Mister Zizai's eyes, I was no more than a fool. He casually pointed out the shortcomings in my cultivation. Although he did not say anything insulting, those eyes still looked at me the way one would look at a pet. Like they were seeing a pet that had managed to stand upright and walk."
1. 自在 (Zìzài) means "free and unrestrained" or "at ease," often used in Daoist/Buddhist contexts to describe a state of spiritual liberation.
