Volume 8, Chapter 75: Numerical Coordinates

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

“25, 36, 162, 243, 304...?”

“......”

Leon rested his chin on one hand, brows tightly knit. After thinking for a moment, he looked at Orion.

“Did Cloti leave anything like a safe? Could this sequence of numbers be a password to open something?”

But Orion shook her head.

“As I just said, Mr. Leon—the teacher sold off all her belongings and property before her death, donated the money to the orphanage, and left only this diary to me. There was no safe.”

“...I see. Alright.”

Orion looked at the row of numbers, but likewise could not make sense of them.

“Maybe she just accidentally miscopied page numbers while writing the diary? So they may not mean anything?”

Rosvisser rejected this at once. She shook her head.

“Your teacher wouldn’t do something meaningless. These numbers absolutely point to something important.”

She turned her gaze to Orion.

“Orion, think carefully. In your everyday life—have you ever encountered these numbers? Or perhaps part of them?”

If Cloti left only this one diary for her only adopted daughter—then assuming the numbers do contain a message, Orion herself must be the key.

“The meaning behind these numbers must be connected to Orion.”

Orion fell silent to think.

“...Some part of them...”

She pulled the paper with the numbers toward herself and stared at them, constantly rearranging them in her mind, grouping, separating, testing patterns.

After a moment—Orion’s eyes lit up.

“I think I know!”

Seeing her reaction, Leon and Rosvisser immediately stood up.

“What is it? You figured something out, Orion?”

Orion nodded, speaking quickly:

“Teacher served as Captain of the Guard for a long time. For the convenience of patrols, she divided the entire city into areas using a pair of numbers—coordinates.”

“Each axis goes from 1 to 50, making 2,500 divisions total.”

“This coordinate system is still used today—it’s extremely practical.”

At that, the two exchanged a glance. Rosvisser asked:

“Then the first pair of numbers, 25 and 36, represent a location in Blazing Sun City?”

“Yes.”

Orion folded the paper and stood up, quickly putting on her coat and heading for the door.

“25, 36 corresponds to... the Blazing Sun City Library.”

...

Blazing Sun City Library.

The library had always been quiet due to its remote location, but now it felt even more deserted—no better than the empty streets outside.

The three climbed the steps and approached the entrance.

The doors were locked. No guard in sight.

Leon tugged at the iron lock.

“Closed? Then we’ll just have to break in.”

No lock from a library could possibly stop the three of them—but Orion hurried forward to stop him.

“Wait, Mr. Leon—I still have the library key. I checked the storage room before we left, just in case. Good thing I did.”

She took out a worn key and unlocked the door.

Leon raised a brow.

“You had the library key?”

“Before I became Captain of the Guard, I worked here for many years as a librarian,” Orion said as she pushed the doors open.

“When I resigned, the curator gave me the key as a memento. I never thought it would actually come in handy one day.”

Leon paused mid-step, curiosity sparked.

“From librarian to Captain of the Guard—quite the leap, isn’t it? One civil, one martial.”

“By that time, I had already read every book in this library. I could recite the placement of each one from memory. Staying here, I could no longer gain anything new from study—so I chose to join the Guard instead.”

She walked deeper into the library.

“It was a new beginning. A new challenge.”

Leon and Rosvisser exchanged a look.

No wonder Cloti had chosen her as a student.

Returning to the matter at hand—

“What about the remaining numbers?” Rosvisser asked.

“We break them down one step at a time.”

Orion led them to one section of shelves.

“25, 36 marked the location. And here—every book has a unique catalog code.”

“And—when we came in earlier—I told you I remember where every book is.”

“Which means—162 is...”

She stopped in front of a shelf and traced her finger along the spines.

Her hand paused on a thin book of maps.

“...this map’s catalog number.”

She pulled it out and spread it open on the floor.

“This map records all the terrain around Blazing Sun City—each division also labeled by numerical coordinates.”

“Because the outer region is far larger, both axes go up to nearly five hundred.”

“And in the number sequence Mr. Leon found—the final pair is coordinates from this map—”

Her finger slid across the map.

“There—243, 304. A forest entrance in the southern mountain range.”

Having confirmed the spot, Orion looked up—her expression brightening for perhaps the first time.

“Mr. Leon, Lady Rosvisser—this must be the place Teacher wanted me to find. We found it!”

The two exchanged a knowing smile.

Rosvisser looked warmly at Orion.

“No—not we. You found what your teacher left for you.”

Orion shook her head, flustered.

“No... if Mr. Leon hadn’t noticed the numbers, and if you hadn’t told me to think again—I couldn’t have figured it out.”

Leon rose to his feet.

“Enough mutual compliments—we’ll have plenty of time for that later. Right now—let’s go see what Cloti left waiting for us.”
