Volume 8, Chapter 78: If You Can't Beat Them, Just Ban Them

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

“The City Lord of the Blazing Sun Clan was actually being controlled by a shard of the Demon Sword...”

Leon stared at Fuyuan, drew in a deep breath, slowly exhaled, and then said:

“To be precise... he was being used as a puppet by the old City Lord.”

Even with Leon spelling it out that far, Fuyuan still didn’t defend himself with a single word.

It was completely at odds with his usual fiery, reckless temperament. Which only confirmed Leon’s suspicion all the more... Fuyuan had already been completely taken over by the old City Lord through the Demon Sword shard.

“No wonder the Silver Dragon couple who once repelled a Void invasion could pick up on it so quickly.”

The old City Lord said unhurriedly:

“Since that’s the case, there’s no need for this old man to hide it any longer.”

As he spoke, the old City Lord took another step forward with that staff of his. Standing beside the puppet City Lord Fuyuan, he narrowed his cloudy eyes and looked at the three before him.

“You cannot save the sun, nor can you save the continent of Samael. The darkness will swallow this land, and all you will be able to do is repeatedly taste the flavor of failure in the shadows...”

Leon met the old City Lord’s gaze head-on. He slowly walked forward, the fallen leaves crunching beneath his boots. The tension crackled between the two sides, yet Leon’s tone and expression remained perfectly composed. He did not pick up the City Lord’s last line. Instead, he said:

“I was wondering where I’d seen that ambitious little-schemer look in your eyes. And then it came to me... Many years ago, there was another tribal leader just like you who betrayed Samael,

lured in the Void, murdered innocents, and even tried to drown the very people who wanted to protect this world. I’ve seen his eyes. They were exactly the same as yours, old man.”

At those words, the old City Lord’s expression changed sharply, and his voice rose:

“You’re talking about Jiaomo... That fellow had a bit of a brain, but not much; his strength wasn’t enough either. That’s why you ended him. I am... not the same as he was.”

“What’s different?”

Leon slowly raised his hand, blue arcs of lightning crackling in his palm.

Rosvisser silently stepped forward as well, standing beside Leon, her hands gathering dragonfire.

“Since you think you know my past so well, then you should also know what became of Jiaomo... and what I can do.”

Leon said softly, “You, old man, plus Fuyuan—are nowhere near enough to stop us.”

“Hehehe... Leon Casmod, I know how strong you are. And I know that no matter how many people I bring, none of them are a match for you.”

The old City Lord remained unhurried. “But what I want to do isn’t to stop you.”

Saying this, the City Lord lifted his gaze toward the dim skyline.

The dying sun hung at the far horizon, trembling as if about to fall. He squinted and continued:

“What I want is merely to ensure that you cannot reignite the sun. So... Leon, I don’t need to defeat you. All I need is to break Constantine and destroy the Golden Helm before dawn tomorrow.”

“So that’s the goal you’ve been hiding, old man...”

He never reported anything earlier because he didn’t know the real Golden Helm was with Constantine.

And just now, he must have secretly trailed us with Fuyuan in tow; by now he’s already learned where the Golden Helm ended up.

Leon frowned, realizing he couldn’t waste another moment arguing with this old man—he needed to finish things here and rush back to Constantine immediately.

“Ross, we’re going!”

At his word, the couple vanished from their spot in the same instant.

When they reappeared, they had already flanked the old City Lord from left and right.

Leon gripped his curved blade; the queen swung her dragon claws. Thunder and heat swept forward; a single hit would turn the old City Lord into drifting ash in one breath.

But at the instant lightning and fire were about to touch the old man’s body, he lifted his hand and struck the air with the crooked branch of his staff.

In an instant, the purple gemstone atop the staff flickered with eerie light; the next second, a layer of purple magic barriers enclosed the bodies of Leon and Rosvisser.

Rosvisser gasped:

“This is... the teleportation magic from the day of the demonstration?!”

“Silver Dragon Queen, just as I know your husband is unmatched in strength, I have also heard of your lightning-fast speed.”

The old City Lord spoke slowly. “I just don’t know... whether that proud speed of yours can return you from the far-northern icefields to the Red Flame Dragon Clan in half an hour.”

“The far-northern icefields?”

“In that case... farewell!”

The moment he spoke, the purple barriers flashed—teleportation activated instantly.

Rosvisser’s figure vanished first; Leon let out a low shout:

“Old man... you just wait!”

As he spoke, Leon hurled the Thousand Birds in his hand. In the split-second before he was teleported out, the Thousand Birds struck the old man’s staff and shattered it to dust.

“Leon, you bastard! You—!”

Seeing his treasured item destroyed, the old City Lord dropped all pretense of composure, his eyes bulging in fury at Leon.

But the last thing Leon left him with was a raised middle finger and an outrageously taunting face.

A beat later, he and Rosvisser were both sent to the icefields of the far north.

“Leon!!”

Leon’s final gesture infuriated the old man nearly to the point of bursting a vessel.

But, thinking it through, Leon had achieved his purpose.

The old City Lord forcefully suppressed his anger toward Leon, instead turning to look at Orion.

Orion stepped back half a step. She knew the old City Lord no longer had any real combat ability.

With his staff destroyed, he could no longer use his teleportation spell.

Which meant she should now be able to defeat Fuyuan and escape this place...

But Fuyuan was currently under some strange form of control, likely even strengthened to a degree. Orion wasn’t sure she could win against him in this state.

As she hesitated, Fuyuan looked at her from not far away.

“Orion, on the eve of your complete failure, let me tell you one more secret.”

The old City Lord tossed aside the shattered remains of his staff, clasped his hands behind his back, and looked lazily toward Orion.

“Back then, I arranged for people to pin the charges on your late teacher, because I knew it might be the key to activating the Golden Helm’s power. But the then–captain of the Blazing Sun Guard was far too dangerous, so during that period, I kept tightening the noose around you... until you finally fled. No one can activate the Golden Helm.

No one can reignite the sun. Accept it, Orion. Losing the light... isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”

The old City Lord assumed these words would push Orion into a rage, perhaps make her shout curses at him.

But the young woman was far calmer than he expected.

She only closed her eyes for a moment, then slowly opened them again.

Her longsword was in her hand, its tip pointed straight at the two before her. In those blue-green eyes, a solitary light flickered in the darkness of the night.

“I will inherit my teacher’s will. For this world... I will bring back the light.”
