Volume 8, Chapter 79: Flight Magic

Rosvisser slowly opened her eyes, and a wave of cold immediately rushed in from all around.

She hunched her body and tail, then noticed a black coat draped over her.

It was Leon’s.

“You’re awake.”

That reliable, familiar voice came from beside her.

Rosvisser sat up slowly and turned toward the sound.

Leon was walking over with a few pieces of wood in his arms, wearing only a thin patched shirt, his nose and cheeks reddened from the cold.

“I just went out to find some firewood.”

As he spoke, Leon set the wood down on the ground.

Then he bent slightly and snapped his fingers by the pile.

Snap...

A spark flickered at his fingertips and caught on the wood.

Only then did Rosvisser realize they were inside a cave.

Leon sat cross-legged by the fire and rubbed his hands.

“I smashed that old man’s staff. The teleportation spell was interrupted:

so we weren’t actually sent all the way to the far-northern icefields.”

As he spoke, Leon cupped his hands to his mouth and breathed on them for warmth, then went on:

“But it’s just as cold.”

Rosvisser hurried to pull the coat off herself and wrap it around Leon.

“Idiot, you’ll freeze.”

Her first concern, as always, was his body.

Leon gave a sheepish grin and shook his head.

“I’m fine. The little guy doesn’t mind.”

The queen bumped his shoulder in fond exasperation.

“Even the strongest man on the surface can’t dodge a cold. Don’t forget that winter you caught the flu and stayed in bed for a whole week.”

It’s funny when you think about it—General Leon fears nothing, can take an uppercut from young Aurora and throw up a light-wall that tears through Void blades, yet he still catches colds.

But that’s a good thing in its way—it means that even though Leon is absurdly strong, he’s still within the range of ‘human.’ People get sick.

After a few simple words, Rosvisser’s body had recovered as well.

The two of them stood shoulder to shoulder at the cave mouth. Outside, the wind and snow were raging.

The cold struck their faces and tossed Rosvisser’s long hair.

She narrowed her eyes at the dark snowfield ahead and said:

“We can’t fix our position from here. I’ll fly up and take a look.”

Leon nodded. “Okay. Be careful.”

“Mm.”

The queen stepped out of the cave, unfurled her wings, and lifted into the sky.

Once she climbed high enough, she could just barely make out the lay of the land.

Rosvisser circled in the air for a good thirty minutes. When she returned to the cave, snow had gathered on her face, shoulders, hair, and clothes.

“Well? Can you tell where we are?”

Rosvisser nodded.

“Just like you said—the old city lord’s teleportation was cut off by you, so we weren’t sent all the way to the far north. This should be somewhere between the Dragon clans and the far-northern icefields. If we keep heading south, we’ll soon be out of this blizzard belt. But...”

Rosvisser trailed off.

Leon arched a brow. “But what?”

“But even so...”

Rosvisser pressed her lips together, lowered her gaze, and her tone sank.

“We still won’t make it back to the Red Flame Dragon Clan before the sun goes completely out.”

She lifted her eyes to Leon.

“The old city lord must already be on his way to Constantine. He said he absolutely wouldn’t let us reignite the sun.

Given the present situation, he has two ways to do that.”

Leon’s mind turned quickly; he picked up her line at once and continued:

“Either destroy the Golden Helm, or... go after Constantine.”

“Right.”

Rosvisser nodded, then added:

“Setting aside what level of strength Fuyuan has while under the Demon Sword shard’s influence—just speaking of those ancient peril-forms that have awakened—I think, with the control he has over the shard, it wouldn’t be hard for the old city lord to turn those peril-forms to his use. At that point, Constantine and Orion will both... be in grave danger.”

Leon’s thoughts raced, and he said in the next breath:

“If the Flame Dragon goes down, the old city lord will destroy the Golden Helm immediately. And even if Constantine’s older brother returns by then, we may still have no way to reignite the sun.”

Put simply, Leon and the others are in another race against time.

They have to get back to the Red Flame Dragon Clan before the old city lord can wreck it, and hold the line around Constantine and the Golden Helm.

Otherwise... it’s all over.

“At my fastest flight speed, it will still take nearly twenty hours from here to the Red Flame Dragon Clan.”

Rosvisser said:

“I don’t know if Constantine can hold out that long.”

Leon frowned, folding his arms in thought.

“Constantine’s clan has recovered decently these last few years, and there are also the people delegated by the Void Realm who were placed with him—that counts for some fighting strength. So even if the old city lord unleashes the ancient peril-forms for a full-scale assault on the Red Flame Dragon Clan, it won’t be resolved in a short time.”

As he spoke, Leon scrubbed at his hair, frustrated.

“But even so, we still need to get back as fast as possible. Who knows what other trump cards that old bastard is hiding.”

He paced back and forth by the fire, mind racing, working through how they could return to the Red Flame Dragon Clan faster.

After a moment, Leon stopped short, turned, and looked at Rosvisser with sudden hope.

“Right—wife, I remember that when dragons are in dragon form, your high-speed flight isn’t relying entirely on your wings, correct? Judging by proportions, even with your wingspan and thickness far beyond normal winged creatures, it’s basically impossible to drive an entire massive dragon body with wings alone. So dragons can open their wings and do pure physical flight in human form; but in full dragon form, most of the lift and drive come from flight magic combined with your inherent physique...”

“So it’s no wonder that ages ago General Leon used to call dragons big lizards with wings—it tracks and it’s reasonable!”

“Right. When I said just now that even at my top speed it would still take twenty hours to get back, I was taking flight magic into account.”

Rosvisser said:

“Even if I pour all my mana into flight magic, it won’t help.”

“You’re talking about ordinary mana, honey.” Leon’s mouth quirked in a smile.

Rosvisser arched a brow.

“Ordinary mana?...”

Her silver eyes shifted, and she understood immediately what Leon meant.

“Oh, I get it. You want me to try reinforcing flight magic with Primordial Force, right?”

Leon nodded.

“Exactly. Well? Is it doable?”

“I can’t claim confidence... but it’s worth a try.”

The ancestral Primordial magic was extremely versatile; beyond curious novelties like Soul Judgment and Holy Radiance—things well outside the scope of ordinary spells—it could also massively amplify the effects of normal magic.

The two of them stepped out of the cave. Rosvisser spread her wings and took on her dragon form.

The dragon leapt into the vault of the sky. Rosvisser beat her wings, circling in the air against wind and snow.

Then she began to draw on the Primordial Force within her and pour it into her flight magic.

Once she was ready, Rosvisser’s figure became a streak of silver light and vanished in an instant.

Leon dropped to one knee on her back and raised a magic barrier to fend off the cold and the onrushing slipstream.

“Hey! Wife! It worked! You’re going way faster than usual!!”

Leon shouted:

“How’s your reserve—do you have enough mana?”

“With this much power stored in the dragon crests, it’s enough. It’s just...”

“Just...?”

“Just that my body can’t take this speed. I’m already... already feeling strained. Any fix, Leon? Maybe throw up a bigger barrier?”

Leon’s thoughts flicked and he immediately had an idea.

“Don’t worry, wife—watch me.”

He set his palm to the scales on her back. A moment later, blue energy spread from his hand, running along the dragon’s body until it covered Rosvisser from head to tail.

“Dragon-riding, is it... Trust you to think of using that.”

Rosvisser let out a soft laugh.

It was the “Martial Soul Fusion” technique the two of them devised back in the day to take on the Ultimate Fear.

They turned Leon’s Reins-Shadow into a suit of “armor” and draped it over Rosvisser’s dragon body. With that, agility, defense, and striking power all rose sharply.

And now, even the stress from acceleration couldn’t touch Rosvisser through the protection of the Reins-Shadow.

“Open it up without fear, wife. We’re going to make it.”

“Okay.”

With that, a chorus of sonic booms rang out. The silver dragon shook her wings and knifed toward the distance at extreme speed.
