Volume 8, Chapter 91: Revenge

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The backwash of the gale swept the battlefield, blowing the thick, acrid reek of blood into every corner. Arcs of lightning still flickered and skipped in the air as Leon, ignoring the peril-forms’ corpses, walked toward the Old City Lord at an unhurried pace.

The old man, who had snapped ramrod-straight a heartbeat before, had already been scared witless. He found himself retreating in time with Leon’s steps; a careless heel caught on a stone and he pitched backward.

He landed hard, then sat there staring wide-eyed at Leon as the man kept coming, scrabbling backward with hands and feet at once. In the end, the last shreds of reason beat back his fear and shock; he scrambled to his feet in a panic, turned, and ran.

Right now, in his eyes, Leon was nothing less than a “monster.”

No rumor or dossier could truly capture the man. His strength exceeded anything words could hold. Only by seeing it with your own eyes, like this, could you feel that suffocating despair press down for real.

Watching the old thing’s panicked retreating back, Leon slowed to a halt. He lifted his hand without hurry. Not far away, the Thundercloud Blade gave two quick twitches—then flew straight into his palm.

Leon judged the distance, then hurled the Thundercloud Blade with all his might at the Old City Lord.

Spinning, the edge carved a long arc through the air—and with a wet hiss the razor blade drove straight through the old man’s thigh.

The shock of pain knocked him to his knees despite himself. “Aaahhh!! Leon... you damned!”

The Old City Lord crashed to the ground clutching his leg, the hurt so savage he nearly rolled end to end. Eyes bulging, he mustered the last of his strength to glare up at Leon.

By then, Leon had already walked up to him.

Bloodshot eyes fixed on Leon, the Old City Lord spat his curses through his teeth.

“You’re a monster! Leon!! You... you don’t deserve to live in this world! No one will ever accept you! No one will ever choose to be with a monster!”

Faced with a dead man’s mad ravings, Leon only rubbed at his ear, impatient.

“All right, old thing. I’ve been married to my wife for over a decade, and we have four kids. You saying no one wants to be with me—who’s going to buy that?”

Back then, the Old City Lord had leaned on the same bucket of filth-slinging to indirectly drive Orion’s teacher Cloti to her death. He probably hadn’t imagined that, against a “general who’s won at life,” the damage would round to zero.

Seeing that Leon wasn’t biting in the least, the Old City Lord ground his teeth in secret.

“Then just die for me!!”

The words had barely fallen when a dark blur snapped into being at Leon’s flank, a long blade whipping toward his neck.

But no matter how fast the strike, before Overload it was slow as a snail.

Leon hadn’t even turned his attention that way, yet his body moved with eerie ease, slipping the lightning-quick ambush like nothing. As he ducked, a surge of surf gathered in his hand.

He lifted his eyes to the attacker and said softly:

“Fuyuan, you can sit this one out for a while.”

With that, Leon flipped that surge of water and drove Fuyuan back dozens of meters in an instant.

And just as the man controlled by the Demon Sword Shard braced to launch a second strike, several tendrils of water magic erupted from beneath his feet. They were nimble; in a blink they bound Fuyuan’s wrists, ankles, and trunk tight, pinning him in place.

S-rank Water Magic · Deep-Sea Prison.

With Fuyuan made behave for the moment, Leon looked back to the Old City Lord.

“Any other tricks, old man?”

The Old City Lord said nothing, glaring holes through Leon.

“Seems not.”

Leon straightened and met his eyes.

“Then any last words?”

“W-what...”

Leon’s patience ticked up another notch toward empty. He dug his fingers into his hair, annoyed.

“I said: any last words. Do you not understand me?”

The Old City Lord’s pupils trembled.

“D-do you not want to know how I joined hands with the Void?”

“No.”

“...What about our other plans with the Void? For example, next...”

“Not interested.”

“I...I...”

He had never expected Leon to come this time with the simple goal of taking his life. Even when he laid out that he had bigger, more explosive intel on hand, Leon seemed not to care in the slightest. He’d hoped to trade what he knew for a way out—but now it looked unlikely.

Even so, with death at his throat, the old man still tried to gamble.

“Besides the Void, I also know the whereabouts of the last deity. As long as you promise not to kill me, I...”

Leon’s patience finally ran out. His face went cold in an instant. “Here’s a tip, old thing. Keep last words short—and make them about you. Not this meandering garbage.”

Only then did the Old City Lord realize the man before him didn’t fit the traditional mold of a “good person” at all. In this man’s eyes, evil was simply evil—and at any cost, it had to be erased to nothing.

“Terms?” “Trades?” “Intel?” None of it was grounds for mercy to this man.

No matter what chips the Old City Lord tried to throw down, he was going to die today. Without a doubt.

Once he fully understood that, resignation finally settled in. But with his heart long since packed tight with rage, how could the old thing go quietly?

After a few seconds of brittle quiet, he started screaming at Leon again.

“You think killing me will end it all?! Killing won’t change anything! The sun will go out! Apollo only had a dream—did you really think Constantine could tug the sun awake? Laughable! As laughable as Cloti Pyx! Come on! Kill me! Do it, Leon!!”

His hoarse roar rolled over the scorched earth. He panted hard, thinking his outburst would stiffen his own spine and press down Leon’s momentum.

But Leon’s face did not change from start to finish. The look he gave the Old City Lord stayed the same: contemptuous, cold.

More awkward than the air going suddenly silent was the air going silent by degrees.

That short stretch of quiet wore away the last scrap of confidence in the Old City Lord’s chest.

He sagged back to the ground, with nothing left but fear of dying.

Leon rose slowly and said in a low voice:

“There’s no especially direct grudge between you and me. And among all the enemies I’ve crossed, you don’t even rank. So... you don’t deserve to die by my hand. The one who will take your life, one for one... is someone else.”

The words had barely landed when a cold gleam flashed before his eyes. Before the Old City Lord could even parse what Leon meant, a shard of light knifed across his vision.

The next second, a broken sword drove straight through his chest and nailed him to the ground.

In the last few seconds of his life, the Old City Lord stared with darkening eyes at the person who had plunged that broken blade into him, face twisted with unwillingness.

“Orion... you!”

The blonde girl was half-kneeling, both hands clenched white on the hilt. Her whole arm, hand and all, trembled. Tears streaked with blood slid down her cheeks. She bared her teeth at the Old City Lord.

“That rainy night, my teacher stabbed the dagger into her own heart like this. You forced her! You forced her! Uah!”

Orion twisted the hilt. The jagged blade churned through the Old City Lord’s ruined chest cavity, shredding what flesh remained. Blood jetted out in surges.

“Now... go to hell.”

She ripped the broken sword free. A flood of blood burst from the wound in his chest. In moments, his whole body lay sunk in a spreading pool.

Clack...

The broken sword hit the ground with a crisp ring.

Orion, dropping to her knees, nearly blacked out. She reeled back two steps and was about to collapse when, at the last instant, Constantine caught her from behind.

“Mr. Constantine...”

Leaning against his chest, Orion slowly closed her eyes.

“I avenged my teacher.”

With that, the girl passed out.
