Volume 9, Chapter 5: Reform Yourself and Start Anew

The crisis of the sun’s extinction was, at last, completely resolved.

After bidding farewell to everyone, on the open ground at the Red Flame Dragon Sanctuary, Safina summoned the Time Palace—just as magnificent and grand as it had been years ago.

Hands on her hips at the doorway, Safina slowly turned to Leon.

“I can’t leave the throne of time for too long. Otherwise the Time-Web and the entire timeline of the present world will become wildly unstable. I suppose the next time we meet will be years from now—maybe even longer. Take good care, Leon.”

Leon nodded deeply.

“You take care too, Safina.”

The Void girl gave a short, amused hum, then glanced at Rosvisser and the girls.

“Stay in love with Leon forever, Rosvisser.”

At that, the queen’s pretty face flushed. She averted her eyes a little and answered softly:

“We will.”

Safina arched a brow; the mischief in her belly began to bubble again. She smiled slyly and asked:

“Then do you want to know when your fifth will be born? I can!”

Leon & Rosvisser: “We don’t!!”

The couple spoke in perfect unison.

Safina blinked. It seemed the two of them didn’t care for spoilers.

She hadn’t really planned to “reveal the heavens,” only to make a parting joke.

“Be good, then. And girls—listen carefully to your mother and father. I can see everything from the Time Palace.”

In the end, Safina didn’t forget to remind the children. The little dragon girls nodded in unison.

That, however, left Xiaoxue—standing off to the side—looking a bit out of place.

Safina’s gaze landed on her.

As the Melkvey family’s adopted daughter, Xiaoxue had never had much presence.

Of course, that was by design. She was shy by nature, and the oldest of the children; most of the time Xiaoxue was quiet and reserved—she didn’t want others to pay too much attention to her.

And yet her mission was bound to the god of time—she was a palace envoy whose calling was inseparable from the god of time. So even if she kept herself as low-key as possible, Safina still, involuntarily, paid her a bit more attention.

After a moment’s thought, Safina called her name.

“Xiaoxue.”

The eldest girl froze, as if she hadn’t expected Safina to address her alone.

“Ah... I’m here. Is there something you need, Teacher Safina?”

Like the other girls, she addressed Safina as “Teacher.”

“Nothing special—just this: next, I’m going to study your traits carefully.”

Safina said:

"After Chronos departed, you—as the key—can no longer open the Time Palace, right?"

“Yes...”

“Mm. I hope that the next time we meet, I’ll have found a way to restore that ability for you.”

Last time’s key left by the previous god of time not being able to open the current god of time’s palace sounded reasonable enough, but Safina still wanted to restore Xiaoxue’s ability if she could.

After all, she can’t keep watch on Leon’s family every moment to see whether they’re in danger and then step in at the critical instant; even less can she leave the throne of time or the palace whenever and wherever she pleases. So when Leon needs her help, he can turn to Xiaoxue.

“Really... thank you so much, Teacher Safina!”

As she spoke, Xiaoxue placed her hands on her knees, bowed her head slightly, and offered a light bow of thanks.

Safina waved with a smile.

“Then—see you in the future, my friends.”

Everyone waved back to the young god of time.

After the farewells, Safina turned and walked toward the Time Palace.

Kaiser hurried after her.

“W-wait—why are you following me?”

Safina was already inside the palace. Seeing him about to step in, she thrust out a hand and stopped him in the doorway.

Kaiser’s brow furrowed hard.

“To stick with you, sis.”

“You’ve stuck with me for years. Isn’t that enough? Did you forget the assignment I gave you before we left this time?”

Kaiser pressed his lips together, looking a little awkward and embarrassed, but he still forced himself to answer:

“I didn’t forget...”

“Then repeat it.”

“T-that’s... not necessary, sis...”

“Repeat. It.”

Cold sweat streamed down Kaiser’s temples. He’d never been able to gainsay his big sister since childhood; he could only tough it out and say:

“After I’m out, I’ll reform myself, love life, and treat—my! own!! life!!—well!”

Hearing Kaiser’s “three-good pledge,” Leon blinked, then couldn’t help but quip:

“Why does that sound like someone just finished serving a sentence...?”

Safina was very satisfied.

“Mm. Not bad. But you still haven’t said the most important point, little brother.”

As she spoke, Safina jerked her chin toward the red-haired beauty in the crowd, all but bludgeoning Kaiser with hints.

This time, though, Kaiser had learned.

“Sis, it’s getting late. You should be on your way.”

Safina: ?

General Leon, quip no. 2: “These two siblings—each one more smooth-tongued than the other.”

They chatted a bit more. Safina waved, signaling Kaiser to take a few steps back.

“That’s about it. Remember, little brother—I’ll be watching you from here...”

Safina pointed to her right eye.

“Watching you. Always!”

The golden gates closed slowly.

The last thing Kaiser saw was his big sister’s wolf-and-tiger, “hurry up and get married” stare.

Gulp!

Kaiser swallowed and muttered under his breath:

“Women past a certain age are terrifying...”

“Mind your words. Women past a certain age are even more attractive.”

A hand patted his shoulder from behind, then added that line. Kaiser turned.

It was Isha.

He opened his mouth, then didn’t know what to say at all, so he could only stand there, staring at Isha.

Arms folded, Isha met Kaiser’s gaze in silence.

Valendna stood between them, glancing left at the purple-haired senior and right at her red-haired best friend.

“If staring counts as dating, are you two already scheduling the royal wedding—ow! My head!”

Her banter with the Void’s socially anxious man didn’t stop Isha from flicking Valendna’s forehead without even looking.

“I’m a non-marrier. That’s the seventh time I’ve emphasized that, Valendna.”

Rubbing her slightly reddened brow, Valendna sniffled.

“In this day and age, non-marriage is already passe—”

Isha’s eyes smiled as her fingers cracked, one by one.

“You don’t want to eat two forehead flicks in under a minute, do you, my dear Miss Valendna~”

What arrived before Valendna’s retort was Isha’s fragrance. Valendna looked at her with sudden gravity.

“...”

Isha had no way to deal with her; she could only pull Valendna into a hug and press her to her chest, trying to “smother her to death.”

From a distance, Leon and Rosvisser watched them. After a moment, Leon couldn’t help asking:

“When did Big Sis get close to Kaiser?”

Rosvisser shook her head.

“The only contact I remember is when Kaiser came to our house to steal the Core years ago—and took my sister hostage.”

“Held hostage... that explains a lot. You Melkvey she-dragons have a strange kink for ‘hostage situations.’”

Rosvisser shot him a look, swatted him with a habitual flick of her tail.

“But my sister has always liked picking up kids who look slow and honest. Kaiser might as well have been custom-made for her... toy.”

“...The Melkvey she-dragons are awfully avant-garde in their figures of speech.”

“Mom, Dad!”

Noa came over with her sisters and Xiaoxue, cutting off the couple’s volley of banter.

Rosvisser turned, bent down, and scooped Muse into her arms, rubbing her cheek against her youngest’s, and asked gently:

“What is it? Want to go home?”

Muse nodded:

“Mm-hm! Mom and Dad, tell Uncle Constantine and the others what’s needed, and let’s go home~”

“Alright.”

After a pause, Rosvisser asked:

“But why do you all look so eager to get home?”

Moon shot up her hand, brimming with excitement.

“Because Teacher Safina just told us she prepared steak and tomato hotpot at our place—and a black-and-white photo of Dad!”

Like a bolt from the blue, General Leon turned to stone on the spot.

At last, he knew where that earlier bad feeling had come from.
