The couple headed to Claudia’s office.Inside, Leon stood by the window, sleeves rolled to show pale, slender forearms, hands in his pockets, his long gold hair neatly coiled at the back of his head.
Kaiser’s entry tests looked to be going smoothly.
Claudia drew her gaze back from Kaiser on the field, turned, slipped her hands from her pockets and folded them before her with a smile. She teased:
“Congratulations, you two—saving the world again. I’m thinking of sending you a big banner to hang up that reads—”
“‘Strongest Husband-and-Wife Duo — The Pride of Samael.’”
“How does that sound?”
Leon and Rosvisser shared a tight glance, then shook their heads with a smile.
They came to the desk, pulled out chairs, and sat.
Claudia sat opposite them.
On the desk sat a clear container.
Inside were shards of Atos’s demon sword—more precisely, about one third of the total.
“After the sun crisis was resolved,” Claudia said, looking down at the shards, “Constantine and that Blazing Sun girl, Orion Pyx, consolidated all the Demon Sword Shards the Old City Lord used to wreck Fuyuan and to drive the ancient peril-forms, and sent them to the Academy. So, Leon, Rosvisser—we’ve gathered every shard scattered across Samael. And per your instruction back then, we split the total into three sets. One set stays here at the Academy; one is with Odin’s clan; the last is in Sky City.”
She lifted her eyes to Leon.
“I have to say, Leon, that idea of yours was a good one. All the Dragon Kings praised it.”
Leon smiled.
“No one knows what happens once you have the sword’s remains, so it’s safest to store them apart.”
He had kept Atos in mind: after they’d finally collected the shards, if—say—the ‘old dominator’ returned or Samael’s environment slipped toward void-corruption and these pieces suddenly fused themselves into one big boss on re-entry... they’d have tailored a wedding robe for Atos.
Separating them also prevented a one-swoop theft. Never put all the eggs in one basket: if the Void invades again and wants the sword back, Atos will have to hit three locations. That buys time to maneuver.
“Now that they’re all collected,” Claudia asked, “what do you want to do next?”
Leon looked at the shards on the desk.
After a moment’s thought, he said:
“Could I see photos of the other two sets?”
Claudia blinked, not quite seeing why.
“Don’t worry, Leon. The sets are complete. Our techs have cross-checked them many times.”
“Still,” Leon said, “I’m not easy until I’ve seen for myself.”
Claudia smiled.
“Alright, I’ll have them sent up.”
“Thanks, ma’am.”
Before long, a staffer knocked, entered, and laid two large prints on the desk.
“For Your Majesty.”
Leon nodded, took one in each hand, and compared them carefully.
At a glance, the count did look complete.
But that wasn’t what he was checking.
“Just as I thought...” he murmured.
Rosvisser leaned in beside him.
“What is it?”
“Something’s missing.”
Leon set the photos down and looked up at Claudia.
“Ma’am, these shards are missing the key piece.”
Claudia’s face sobered. She leaned forward and lowered her voice.
“What’s missing?”
“An eye. When I fought Atos,” Leon said, “I saw it clearly: set into the sword’s hilt was an eyeball. And I’m certain it wasn’t decoration. That eye housed formidable Void power.”
He paused, then added:
“If you’d rather not trust my memory, call Kaiser in. He knows that sword better than any of us.”
Claudia frowned.
“A single oversight in a hundred precautions... Very well. When Kaiser finishes, we’ll have him confirm. It’s not that I doubt you—just that for something this important—”
Leon lifted a hand with a smile.
“I get it.”
Claudia smiled back.
While they waited for Kaiser, Leon asked:
“By the way—has cooperation between the Academy and Sky City really gone deep enough that we’re training a guard cohort specifically for them?”
He’d heard the outline from Claudia while job-hunting for Kaiser, but hadn’t pressed for detail; he hadn’t realized the ties ran this close.
Claudia took her time.
“Yes. In fact, Principal Olette told me that ever since the War of Ultimate Fear, the Sky City authorities have been in much more frequent contact with the Academy, and we’ve revived a lot of long-shelved projects. Now, Sky City is the Dragons’ most prosperous and most inclusive city. More and more Dragons are settling there, and that puts public security on the agenda. Add to that a third of the Demon Sword Shards being stored in Sky City—so they urgently need more guards to keep bad actors from stealing them. Hence the Academy’s commission to train a batch for Sky City. Call it a win-win.”
“Win-win?” Leon echoed.
Claudia nodded.
“Sky City gets new staff; the Academy places a whole group of idle graduates. Win-win.”
Leon drifted for a moment, back to the days after he graduated from the Dragon-Slaying Academy. He’d been “direct-admitted” to the Dragon-Slaying Corps on the strength of all-top marks, but classmates without scores or connections had ended up idle at home, taking part-time work. Brutal.
He hadn’t expected to see the same among Dragons.
After a little more small talk, a knock sounded.
“Come in,” Claudia said.
Samantha entered, with Kaiser behind her.
“Vice Principal Claudia, Kaiser has completed all tests. On performance, he’s fully qualified to serve as a Sky City Guard Squad Captain,” Samantha reported.
This was always a formality for the strongest guard, so Claudia didn’t pry.
“Good. Prepare the paperwork and hand it directly to him.”
“Yes, Vice Principal.”
Samantha dipped and withdrew.
Once she’d left, Kaiser asked:
“Leon, when do we take up the post in Sky City?”
Leon smiled.
“Eager wage-earner, aren’t you. Hold up—we need you to confirm one thing first.”
“Alright. What is it?”
Leon slid the two photos and the Academy’s shard set to Kaiser.
“We’ve gathered nearly all shards that fell across Samael. But people who saw the sword said there was an eyeball set in the hilt; it isn’t here. You know that sword better than we do. See anything?”
Kaiser studied shards and photos for a while, then nodded.
“Yes. Just like you said, Leon—the ‘Magic Eye’ from the sword isn’t here.”
“Magic Eye?”
Claudia repeated the name under her breath, then asked:
“Does it belong to Void armaments?”
Kaiser shook his head.
“No. It isn’t a Void weapon. It isn’t even a weapon at all.”
He dropped his gaze to the shards again, fell silent for a beat, then said, enunciating each word:
“It is... the previous Void Sovereign’s eye.”
