Volume 9, Chapter 12: Our Way

Kaiser’s words left the other three in the office wearing the same look of surprise.

After a brief pause, Leon asked:

“There was... a previous Void Sovereign?”

Kaiser nodded.

“Yes—but that was a very long time ago. Don’t forget, it was Atos who unleashed chaos to invade your Samael. By then, he had already become the new Void Sovereign.”

Rosvisser lowered her gaze to the heap of demon-sword shards and murmured, “So he took the predecessor’s eyeball as a trophy... Atos really does have unique taste.”

Claudia, however, seized on another point.

“Kaiser, was the previous Void Sovereign also linked to the Void itself? In other words, like Atos—undying?”

“As far as I know, yes.”

Kaiser said it gravely.

“Records about the previous Void Sovereign are extremely scarce, but one thing’s certain: every Void ruler merges with the Void as a whole to ensure they cannot truly die.”

His eyes moved over Claudia and Leon, and he added slowly:

“I know what you’re about to ask. If the previous Void Sovereign could be defeated, then by the same method Atos should be beatable as well.”

Leon and Claudia looked at each other and nodded in tacit agreement.

That was exactly what they cared about. When Atos led the Void legions into Samael, his undying body had brought Leon and the rest an unprecedented sense of despair.

Even when Kaiser, under Leon and Rosvisser’s joint assault, barely forced Atos back into the Void, Leon was certain that blow hadn’t been enough to kill him.

Once fused with the Void, he could not be killed by conventional means.

That had been their standing belief. But if Atos had once defeated the previous Void Sovereign, then even fusion with the Void wasn’t absolutely invincible.

Like an oasis in a desert, Leon and the others looked to Kaiser with renewed hope, waiting for what came next.

“Unfortunately... aside from Atos himself, no one knows how he beat the previous Void Sovereign.”

The honest young man’s statement was a bucket of cold water over the flame that had just caught.

Claudia leaned back, eyes closed, rubbing her brow, and sighed. Rosvisser lowered her lashes, fingers tightening at the edge of her seat. Leon glanced down; Rosvisser’s five fingers were laced tight with his.

After a moment, Leon said:

“Even so, we don’t need to be pessimistic. At least it proves Atos can be defeated. That’s better than believing he’s unbeatable, isn’t it? That’s the situation.”

Having a target was better than having no plan at all. At minimum, it gave them motive to keep sparring with Atos.

Claudia laced her hands behind her head and slouched into her chair, the heaviness in her mood eased by Leon’s words.

“Next, the Academy and Sky City will continue searching for that missing Magic Eye. It may be a trophy cut from the dead, but it’s Void stuff at the end of the day. Better we recover all of it before it breeds trouble.”

Leon and Rosvisser agreed.

Only...

Leon looked at a recess among the shards on the desk—that should have been the socket where the Magic Eye sat in the hilt. He kept turning over Claudia’s line, “a trophy cut from the dead,” and an awful thought rose unbidden.

“Was it really... from the dead?”

“Leon? What is it?”

Seeing his expression shift, Rosvisser asked softly. Leon shook himself, smiled.

“Ah—nothing.”

That ended the discussion of Atos and the Magic Eye. Claudia set the photos aside, then drew a fine wooden box from beneath the desk.

“There was another reason I called you.

” She pushed the box to the couple and opened it.

They leaned in.

Inside lay two...

Recording stones?

Leon picked one up and weighed it.

“Smaller than standard, and much lighter. A custom make?”

Claudia smiled, leaned forward, fingers interlaced, chin resting lightly on her hands.

“My latest little gadget. It’s a recording stone with long-range transmission added. After the last few critical battles I realized our comms are awful—Message Dragons alone can’t move intel fast enough—so I built this ‘comms recording stone. It’s still in testing. I’ve rolled it out in a small pilot at the Academy, and I’d like you two to test it for a while as well.”

Rosvisser blinked.

“Testing is fine, but... why us?”

Claudia shrugged.

“Because you’re Principal Olette’s model couple.”

Rosvisser was even more lost.

“What does that have to do with it...”

“Everything,” Claudia said.

“You two are glued at the hip, but when you have to separate for important business, you miss each other like mad and can’t say it, right? That’s when my comms stone earns its keep.”

Leon said solemnly:

“Ma’am, we have our own way of expressing longing.”

Claudia arched a brow. “Which is?”

“Dragon marks!”

“Get out.”

...

Kaiser stayed at the Academy for now; Claudia said the paperwork would be quick, and barring surprises he could take up his Sky City posting tomorrow. Leaving from the Academy would save time, and it made it easy to dispatch the guard cohort together.

Good thing the girls—including Noa—were still at the Academy; otherwise Leon wouldn’t have felt great about leaving an introverted Voidfolk boy like Kaiser on his own. With his daughters there, they could keep him company.

Leaving the office, the couple reached the Academy gate. Rosvisser spread her arms, ready to shift to dragon form, when Leon said:

“I’m heading to the Red Flame Dragon Clan with Hawk in a bit. Constantine wrote a couple days ago—he’s got something else he wants my help with.”

Rosvisser nodded.

“Alright. Be careful on the road, and if anything comes up...”

She pulled the comms recording stone from her pocket, waggled it in her palm, and smiled.

“Use this magic little gadget to call me.”

Leon smiled and flashed an OK.

“You be safe too.”

“Mm.”

They waved and parted.

Leon summoned Hawk and flew for the Red Flame Dragon Clan.

“You flame-breather—what’s the big secret this time?”
