A few hours later, Leon reached the Red Flame Dragon Clan’s territory. He happened to catch Constantine just about to head out.“Yo—where are you off to? You even dressed up for it.”
Leaning against Hawk, arms folded, Leon blocked Constantine with a grin.
The fire-breather normally threw things on at random, relying on that blazing red mane to carry the look. With a bit of polish today he really did have a touch of noble air.
Of course—noble or not—that face was still as stern as ever, with that faint frown.
“Blazing Sun City,” Constantine said plainly.
Leon blinked.
“Blazing Sun City? What for?”
“To see my big brother,” Constantine answered without missing a beat.
Leon narrowed his eyes, thought a moment, then asked:
“And you had to dress this formally to see your brother? Sounds like you’re going to a matchmaker.”
A flick passed through Constantine’s gaze; then he explained:
“When you meet someone you haven’t seen in a long time, you should dress properly.”
Leon cut straight through.
“There’s a difference between ‘proper’ and ‘courtship robes.’ You’re going to see Orion. Don’t think I don’t know.”
Constantine’s Adam’s apple bobbed; he grunted:
“And here I thought my seamless excuse wouldn’t be torn apart by you.”
“Seamless? It’s so full of holes you could use it as a showerhead.”
Leon chuckled.
“So I’m guessing that ‘favor’ in your letter the other day is also about Orion?”
This time Constantine didn’t front. He nodded. “Yes.”
“How exactly do you want me to help?”
Constantine thought a moment, then said slowly:
“I want to have a deeper conversation with Miss Orion about our relationship. I hope that, while accompanying her, I can further know and understand her. These days I keep thinking—if we’re only ‘friends,’ my concern for her has already gone beyond what a friend should feel. So I want to discuss it with her face to face and see if we can find an answer.”
After that long stream, Leon rubbed his brow and summarized cleanly:
“You want to woo Orion.”
Color rose up Constantine’s face, though he forced calm.
“Don’t use such crude words.”
“Fine—chasing a girl, then.”
At Leon’s tone, Constantine arched a brow.
“You’re good at it?”
“No. I married my first love. When have I ever ‘chased’ anyone?”
Leon coughed at his own embarrassment.
“But girls are girls the world over—and Orion’s temper’s a bit like my wife’s. Helping you court her? Not a problem.”
That took a quiet weight off Constantine’s chest.
The two set out on the spot for the Blazing Sun Clan.
...
On the way, the comms recording stone in Leon’s pocket buzzed. He took it out; on its face a simple silver-dragon sigil flashed.
Rosvisser’s personal mark, registered to the stone. Everyone with a stone had one—kept things straight.
Leon fed a trickle of mana into the stone; the sigil stopped blinking. He cleared his throat and spoke into it:
“What is it, love? Miss me after a few minutes apart already?”
“Get lost. I’m just testing Claudia’s comms stone. Who misses you? I don’t—mm... don’t.”
Her denial rattled out like beads from a string.
Leon chuckled.
“Works great. I miss you too, wife.”
“Mm... mm? I said I don’t miss you! I—”
“Alright, alright. You home yet?”
“No.”
Rosvisser said:
“On the way I ran into my sister. She’s headed to the Sky City Hall, so she roped me along. We just got to Sky City and we’re about to shop.”
Right on cue, Isha’s bright voice burst through from the other end:
“Hii, brother-in-law! I’ve kidnapped your wife—la-la-la—powerless brother-in-law~~”
Leon rubbed his brow.
“Sis, what are you two doing in Sky City?”
“Valendna’s birthday is coming up. I’m buying her a present,” Isha said. “Clan luxuries, ornaments, clothes—nothing has any character. Sky City might. So we came to look.”
Among Dragons, birthdays came once a year; the gaps were long, but close friends took them seriously. Valendna had taught Leon wind magic, lent Isha the Holy-Shade Dragon’s Tear, and also helped during the recent sun crisis—of course Isha would go big on a gift.
“Have fun, then,” Leon said.
“It’s not really about ‘fun’ at this point,” Rosvisser lowered her voice. “New Sky City rule: whenever Dragon-King-level personnel come—whether for meetings, vacation, whatever—Sky City assigns them an accompanying guard.”
Leon scratched his hair.
“A shopping trip with a bag-carrier—sounds great to me.”
“Great where? I don’t care, but my sister hates it.”
Isha really did hate trailing around with boring strangers—even if they were just trying to do their guard job. Not a slam on them; having a stranger at your elbow is awkward and kills the mood.
And once brows knit, there are always private things to say; sisters rarely get to shop together. An external guard is just wrong for that.
“But,” Rosvisser added, “it’s a rule—not an optional service.”
Likely the Tower Lord was simply spooked by recent crises. Any Dragon-King entering Sky City couldn’t just wander like before.
“Ask the Tower Lord for someone she can at least stand— I mean, an accompanying guard that’s easy on the eyes,” Leon suggested.
Rosvisser smiled, helpless.
“People my sister ‘can stand’ in all Samael wouldn’t number thirty. Let’s adapt—and don’t make it hard on the Tower Lord.”
The rule existed both as prudence and because the Tower Lord knew Dragon Kings would understand rather than resent it.
“Alright,” Leon said.
“What about you? What’s Constantine—what did he need your help with?”
Sitting cross-legged on Hawk’s back, Leon glanced at the red dragon flying alongside, then brought the stone to his mouth and palmed it, lowering his voice.
“Helping him get the girl.”
The queen froze; her tone turned instantly serious.
“Get the girl? Why? Are you good at ‘getting girls’?”
Jealousy imminent, between the lines. Leon blew out a breath and smiled wryly.
“Why are Dragon Kings’ focus points always so weird... The man’s hundreds of years old and finally catching feelings. As his buddy, I’ve got to vet things for him.”
Rosvisser huffed a laugh.
“Less nonsense. The target’s Orion, yes?”
“Mm. We’re already en route to Blazing Sun City—about twenty minutes out.”
“Alright.”
She paused, then asked:
“Think they have a shot?”
“Hard to say. If it goes poorly, he stays single.”
“And if it goes well?”
“Wedding this year.”
