Volume 9, Chapter 15: Isha's Elder Sister Warning: Don't Waste My Time (1)

While Leon and the owner were out hunting for inspiration, over in Sky City the Dragons’ side, Rosvisser and Isha were enjoying a rare sisters’ day.

They had fun the whole day. Isha even picked out quite a few gifts suitable for a birthday, but she didn’t buy any.

Because she kept feeling each one was missing that last bit of meaning.

So she planned to keep looking. There was still a week until Valendna’s birthday; plenty of time.

The sisters browsed the streets while choosing a birthday present for Valendna.

Everything was perfectly harmonious.

Except for the Sky City guard trailing them not far behind.

The guy was a meter ninety, wearing sunglasses, bronze-skinned, muscular, a close-cropped cut, and the nasolabial folds at the corners of his mouth made a textbook “ shape. At a glance, his whole body seemed to read:

“I’m Sky City’s top bodyguard.”

Rosvisser praised the man’s professionalism with satisfaction.

Only, she and Isha had come out to shop for one thing:

To keep it low-key and free.

But as it was, with that werewolf bodyguard brother tailing them, every passerby on the street couldn’t help sneaking looks at her and Isha.

Rosvisser finally understood why her big sister chased after freedom so much.

“I can’t take it, Little Ros.”

As they left a certain pedestrian street, Isha suddenly stopped.

Rosvisser stopped as well and looked back at her.

“What is it, Sis?”

Isha turned, strode straight up to the bodyguard who had followed them the whole day.

Even at a clean one-seventy-three plus heels, Isha had to tip her chin up to look him in the eye.

The bodyguard, a little shy, pushed his sunglasses up his nose, cleared his throat twice, and looked aside as if pretending he hadn’t seen Isha.

“Friend, I’ll pay you the rest of this month’s wages. Just please stop following us, all right? We’re both Dragon Queens, you know that? Under normal circumstances no one in all of Sky City can hurt us. We can protect ourselves. Clear?”

Isha tried to spend money to avert misfortune.

But the bodyguard was unmoved by money. He spoke in a low voice:

“I work for the Tower Lord, Red Dragon Queen. Escorting you and the Silver Dragon Queen is the assignment I received. Until you leave Sky City, I must accompany you the entire time.”

“...No room to negotiate?”

“No room.”

Isha pouted, frowned, paced two quick circles, then as if something occurred to her, stopped and asked:

“Then can I swap you out?”

The bodyguard hesitated, then nodded.

“You can.”

Ten minutes later, in front of Twilight Tower, several guards stood in a straight line—men and women, young and old.

The Tower Lord even came out in person to replace Rosvisser and Isha’s escort detail.

After all, the sisters had done a lot in the Ultimate Tunnel under Sky City. The Tower Lord carefully chose the most reliable staff and specifically instructed:

“Silver Dragon Queen, Red Dragon Queen, these are currently Sky City’s highest-caliber guards in quality and overall ability. While escorting you they will guarantee zero presence. They will not appear in your field of view and will not affect your experience.”

The Tower Lord spoke.

Isha’s gaze passed along the row of guards. After a moment of silence, she muttered under her breath:

“They’re all like the birthday gifts we picked for Valendna.”

The Tower Lord didn’t understand what Isha meant, so he glanced at Rosvisser beside him for help.

The queen explained:

“My sister means everyone’s very good, but each is still missing that last bit. She isn’t satisfied.”

The Tower Lord froze.

“Is that so? It seems my screening had some oversights—wasn’t strict enough.”

Rosvisser folded her arms, tilted her body slightly, leaned close to Isha, and lowered her voice.

“Close enough is fine, Sis. Don’t turn this into picking concubines. We Dragons scrapped that system thousands of years ago. Old-world bad habits.”

“Hush!”

Isha bumped her sister’s shoulder lightly. It was rare to come out and play—of course she wanted a companion she found pleasing to the eye.

Rosvisser smiled helplessly. She knew her eldest sister’s temperament—just a touch of perfectionist.

You could see it from the way Isha chose Valendna’s present:

She didn’t want “looks okay.” She wanted “must be satisfied.”

“But Red Dragon Queen, the guards currently available to take assignments are only these. The others are either rotating on Demon Sword Shard watch or escorting other Dragon Kings.”

The Tower Lord said:

“So perhaps...”

The long slumber had left the Tower Lord pressed for time.

He would open the “VIP lane” for the two sisters, but that didn’t mean making huge concessions on everything.

So he clenched his teeth inwardly: the rules for escort duty could not be changed.

But Isha was not someone who settled.

The two sides reached a bit of an impasse.

Just then, one of the Tower Lord’s attendants stepped forward and spoke softly:

“Master, the Academy’s newest cohort of guards who passed testing has arrived. Shall I have them go rest at the quarters first, or...?”

At that, the Tower Lord’s eyes lit up.

He had planned to let the new guards rest,

But with Isha’s matter still unresolved before him,

After a brief struggle, he said:

“Bring them here first. There’s an urgent task.”

“Yes, Master.”

The attendant bowed and left at a brisk pace.

Isha watched the attendant’s departing back, then looked to the Tower Lord.

“What is it, Tower Lord?”

“Oh—newly summoned guards. I just had someone direct them here. Perhaps one of them will satisfy you, Red Dragon Queen.”

Isha smiled.

“Then I’ll trouble you, Tower Lord.”

“No trouble. In fact, with the new guards we can combine prior experience and gradually refine the guidelines to avoid this situation.”

The Tower Lord had always taken Sky City—founded by his own hands—very seriously.

Although at the start it was only to use the residents’ emotions to suppress the Ultimate Tunnel, with the years this place had slowly become a haven for the homeless.

He only wanted Sky City to become better.

And that road was destined not to be smooth sailing.

Luckily, he wasn’t one to complain. If there was trouble, he solved the trouble. If there was hardship, he overcame the hardship.

Charging in without overthinking was still better than waiting in place.

Before long, he new recruits arrived at Twilight Tower

“This batch is the newly selected guards.”

The Tower Lord sighed lightly.

“Looks like the Academy’s working efficiently.”

He turned to Isha.

“Red Dragon Queen, you can review the new group as well—see if any meet your satisfaction.”

Truthfully, Isha no longer held out much hope.

She had seen too many years and met too many people, and few ever suited her eye. What could she possibly find in a mere ten-odd minutes?

But since the Tower Lord had called the new cohort over, she had to go take a look.

If nothing else, she’d pick the one that looked relatively better.

Arms folded, Isha strolled up to the first person.

A girl—much shorter than Isha—who looked a bit nervous.

Isha smiled, reached up and pinched the girl’s cheek, but said nothing, and moved on to the next.

This one wasn’t timid, but whether in looks or the feel at first glance, she seemed a bit too flashy.

Isha shook her head and moved on...

Then one, another, another—none quite satisfactory.

Watching Isha pass one guard after another, the Tower Lord couldn’t help breaking a sweat.

“What kind of guard does the Red Dragon Queen actually want?”

Rosvisser, standing to the side, chuckled.

“Roughly: looks honest, doesn’t talk much, but can’t be truly boring. When they do speak once in a while, they have to pique my sister’s interest.”

She paused, then added:

“If they’re stronger than her, that would be best.”

A chill of exasperation crossed the Tower Lord’s face.

“Your sister asks for a lot.”

Now that she wielded Primordial Force, she was among the top combatants even among Dragon Queens. No guard would outclass her...

Rosvisser drawled, relaxed.

“Which is why, Tower Lord, I felt you rushed this new rule without thinking it through.”

The Tower Lord shook his head helplessly and sighed.

“Seems I’ll have to revise things properly over the next few days.”

As they chatted, Isha’s voice drifted over from the end of the line:

“Eh~ what are you doing here too? Perfect, perfect. Since it’s such a coincidence, you can be my escort.”

Rosvisser and the Tower Lord followed the sound with their eyes.

A ponytailed figure was walking toward Isha.

When the person drew close enough to make out the face, Rosvisser couldn’t help being a little shocked.

“Kai—Kaiser?...”
