The King forced a smile, though it trembled at the edges.
"Perhaps... we will die today," he said quietly. "To think that the Everlasting Kingdom would fall during my reign."
His fingers tightened around the ancient device. It was the kingdom’s final safeguard, the last resort meant to cleanse the land entirely, even at the cost of everything upon it. The ancestors had left grave warnings about the calamity, etched in blood and fear. He had believed himself prepared.
Reality proved him wrong.
The calamity exceeded all imagination.
It corrupted not only flesh and land, but the very fabric of existence. The air carried madness. Space itself warped and shuddered. Even thoughts were not safe, whispering despair into the minds of the living.
Deep within the underground...
Saya moved like a streak of destruction.
She tore through the tunnels at terrifying speed, obliterating every dark apparition that dared block her path. Her strikes were merciless and precise, shattering even those whose power rivaled Hero-rank experts. Bodies burst apart before they could even scream, reduced to fragments of black mist and viscous sludge.
Bang! Bang!
The ground quaked violently, cracks spreading like spiderwebs as the air boiled under the pressure of her unleashed energy. Heat, lightning, and killing intent collided, turning the underground into a battlefield of chaos.
A dark apparition was hurled from the air and smashed into the ground like a falling meteor.
BOOM!
Smoke and debris erupted outward as the black sticky liquid was blasted away, exposing fractured stone beneath. The shockwave rippled through the tunnels, shaking the foundations of the palace above.
A sharp whipping sound followed.
Hundreds of dark apparitions surged into the smoke, shrieking as they lunged toward Saya. In the next instant, a surge of power exploded outward.
A blazing red line carved through the darkness, slicing through the air itself. The dark apparitions were cleaved apart in a single sweep, their bodies torn asunder and hurled several kilometers away, reduced to nothing more than scattered fragments.
Bang! Bang!
Saya forced herself upright, her chest heaving violently as she drew in ragged breaths. Sweat, ash, and traces of black corruption clung to her skin. Without hesitation, her free hand moved once more, fingers weaving a complex spell with practiced precision.
In less than a second, towering pillars of flame erupted from the ground.
The inferno roared skyward, incinerating everything nearby. Dark apparitions caught within the blaze shrieked as their forms warped and disintegrated, reduced to drifting embers and scorched black residue.
"Huff... there are too many," Saya muttered, tightening her grip around the vajra sword. "I can’t even draw out Souta’s full potential..."
She grimaced. This body, Souta’s Fifth Stage Evolution, was still unfamiliar to her. She didn’t yet understand its limits, its hidden capabilities, or the true extent of its power. Every movement felt like wielding a weapon she had yet to fully grasp.
Bending her knees, Saya surged forward and halted abruptly after only a few seconds.
Her expression darkened.
Ahead, she sensed more than ten dark apparitions radiating power equal to Hero-rank experts. Their auras pressed down like crushing weight. Behind them lurked hundreds more, each comparable to SSS-rank, their presence writhing like a sea of malice.
As for the dark apparitions at SS-rank and below...
They were countless.
A cold fury burned in her eyes.
"These creatures...!" Saya snarled. "I’ll kill every last one of you!!"
Her teeth ground together as she steadied her stance. Fear had no place here. Retreat was not an option.
No matter the cost, she would push forward.
Whoosh!!
Saya vanished in a flash.
In the next instant, the vajra sword swept forward, carving through space itself. The dark apparitions at the front were struck head-on by the unleashed energy slash and exploded violently, their forms torn apart before they could even react.
Smoke and corrupted mist billowed outward. From within the chaos, the higher-level dark apparitions surged forward, their twisted silhouettes emerging one after another. Their malice flooded the air, thick and suffocating, as waves of killing intent locked onto Saya like countless blades.
Saya kicked against the air.
Magic circles bloomed beneath her feet, overlapping and rotating as they flared to life.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
She collided with the high-level dark apparitions in a brutal exchange. Blades clashed, fists struck, and raw power detonated with every movement. The air ruptured repeatedly, shockwaves ripping through the underground as if the space itself were being torn apart.
These dark apparitions were nothing like the ones that had appeared in Nature Zone City.
They were far more terrifying, stronger, faster, and deadlier by several folds.
Bang!
A devastating strike landed.
Saya was blasted backward, her boots carving deep grooves into the shattered ground. She gritted her teeth as two overwhelming presences suddenly appeared at the edges of her vision.
Dark apparitions flanking her from both sides.
Without hesitation, she stepped back.
Whoosh!!
Shadows beneath her feet rippled violently. Several doppelgangers rose from the darkness, identical to Souta’s appearance in every detail, their gazes cold and unwavering as they spread out in perfect coordination.
Saya then poured her energy into every piece of equipment on her body.
The [Yin Yang Bracelet] blazed brilliantly as [Yin Yang Unification] activated. Black and white light intertwined, forming a perfect balance of opposing forces. At the same time, the [Orb of Arcane Seal] trembled and radiated a powerful glow.
Ohm!!
In the blink of an eye, darkness and light exploded outward.
The dark apparitions saw only those two colors before a tremendous force slammed into their bodies. Their corrupted forms were unable to resist. They collapsed, shattered, and detonated mere seconds after contact.
Boom!! Boom!! Boom!!
Explosions chained together endlessly.
The entire spatial structure trembled violently, cracks rippling through the air itself as if reality were on the verge of collapse.
The power behind the attack, magnified by the combined skills of multiple artifacts, was nothing short of horrifying.
Dark apparitions below the Seventh Shackle Realm were erased instantly, their existence snuffed out without even a trace. Even those that stood on the Seventh Shackle Realm could endure no more than a single heartbeat before collapsing under the overwhelming force.
From within the shifting darkness, Saya emerged.
Hundreds of dark apparitions surrounding her were annihilated in the aftermath, their remnants scattering like ashes before vanishing entirely. Without slowing her pace, she pressed forward, her figure disappearing once more into the shadows.
Before long, the passage opened into an enormous expanse.
The space before her was vast. It was so immense that it rivaled the size of an entire planet. There was no sky, no horizon, only an endless sea of dark, viscous liquid stretching in every direction. It churned and pulsed slowly, radiating an oppressive aura that corroded space itself. The air burned with decay, and even the light seemed to wither in its presence.
"This is..."
Saya came to a halt, her eyes widening in shock.
Her worst suspicion had been confirmed.
...
The old man, Souta’s grandfather, stood silently before the virtual capsule, his gaze heavy with resolve and sorrow.
"You will forget many things," he said at last, his voice low. "Your memories will be jumbled... fractured. Those will be the side effects of what is about to happen."
Boom!!
In the next instant, a tremendous surge of energy erupted outward. The ground shook violently as the virtual capsule flared to life, bathing the chamber in a blinding, dazzling light.
The old man slowly raised his head, his eyes narrowing as the pressure intensified.
"It’s starting..." he murmured. "Souta, remember this. No matter what happens, you will remember."
His voice hardened, carrying an ancient weight.
"You are a door pusher."
The energy wave continued to expand, spreading far beyond the chamber, beyond the city, beyond the land, until it engulfed the entire planet.
The world itself trembled.
Across continents and oceans, every living being felt it. An unseen force crushed down upon them. All eyes turned skyward in terror, hearts pounding as they bore witness to an event unlike anything in recorded history.
An unprecedented change had begun.
...
In the depths of the royal palace of the Everlasting Kingdom,
Saya felt extreme dread.
The cause of everything was here.
Below her, a huge and magnificent metallic door stood suspended in the air. Dark liquid covered its surface, and a tremendous amount of energy gushed out every second. Dark apparitions, numbering about a billion, scattered around it in a seemingly chaotic order. The air itself was filled with a miasma that could drive people insane.
Strange screeches and hollow sounds echoed throughout the surroundings.
"The door..."
Saya recalled what had happened to her in the past. The war and the destruction of her clan flashed through her mind in the blink of an eye.
She wondered whether the last resort of the people of the Land of Fire Light could even stop this. She had no idea if it would work.
In just a second, countless thoughts came to her mind. She wanted to bring Souta out of this land, yet she also wanted to give him more time. At the same time, her mind was filled with the urge to destroy these abominations, the very cause of her clan’s downfall.
