Chapter 3837: Taking The Next Step

"Absolutely not!" She got up, glaring at him. "Did you really think I would say ok to that?! I may not be a devout follower of genism anymore, but this is still impure and wrong, and I won’t accept it!"

"I’m not saying I’m actually going to sleep with them," Rui gestured with his hands for her to relax. "Conception can occur without direct insemination, you know? We have technology for that, and it’s a very clinical process. You can think of it as sperm donation. You will always be the one I love, ok?"

Her expression softened. "...Still, I don’t like it."

Rui heaved a sigh. "I know, I don’t like it either. But it’s not a burden that you can bear yourself. Although..."

He shrugged. "We could make it work."

Her expression shifted as the bronze skin of her cheeks reddened a little. She averted her gaze with a hint of embarrassment. "Are you saying you want me to bear your children?"

"It’s just a thought." He reached out his arm to pull her back into his arms, coaxing her to rest her head on his chest. "We aren’t young anymore, although we weren’t young when we met, by any means. But we still had a youthful, carefree life back then. We don’t have that anymore. Even if I didn’t become Emperor, you and I have gone past just being a young couple in love."

His tone softened. "Our emotions have matured and ripened, and... well, it would be a shame if it didn’t bear fruit."

To her credit, she fell into a deep thought as her amber eyes grew hazy. "...The thought of starting a family with you sounds wonderful and purposeful. But... I’m afraid."

It was not something that the average person would expect to hear from a Transcendent Candidate, but Rui understood exactly what she meant.

He understood what she meant.

Her death had traumatized them both, and it stemmed from weakness. A weakness that made their bond vulnerable to those who threatened their lives. Only relatively recently had they both obtained enough power to feel truly secure in that nobody would be able to steal them from each other anymore.

But that was only when it came to protecting themselves.

"A baby... A child..." Amare whispered. "...is a vulnerable being. I am confident we can protect our lives, but a child’s as well? If I became a mother, I would be terrified day in and day out about this child’s well-being."

"That is the price of family," Rui remarked with a serious tone. "You risk losing it. But... if ordinary men and women have the courage to start a family, then it would be shameful if we, the two most powerful beings in this entire continent, are too afraid."

"Ordinary men and women haven’t made an enemy out of NOVA and the Evolutionary Army," Amare’s tone was one of dread. "On top of that, we live in an era of danger. Where anybody can die to a negatron-empowered teleportation ambush in the blink of an eye. Something that even I don’t have the confidence in being able to stop. It’s a terrifying reality, Rui."

"I know." Rui heaved a deep breath. "But... that just means we have to get even stronger, Amare. It means our civilization has to get stronger. Having a family to protect... that’s when people are at their most powerful."

"You want a family to grow even stronger?" She raised an eyebrow.

"And because it seems fulfilling in a way that Project Water might never feel, although Project Water has a tendency to assimilate everything." Rui smiled with an amused expression.

"Including me," she huffed.

"Oh come on, you love my water, don’t you?"

"Hmph, who loves your water?"

"Hehehe, it’s been a while, your grandmother stopped us when you woke up, but I bet you’re thirsty."

He quickly mounted her in the blink of an eye as his smile grew mischievous. "I know I am."

Her expression grew bashful as she hid her embarrassment. His ethereal eyes grew more serious as they bore deep into her amber irises. Gazing at her beautiful appearance and her even more beautiful power ignited the fires of passion in his heart.

"Amare, let’s start a family."

Her amber eyes widened at those words. "Wha— just like that?!"

"Just like that." He smiled, leaning closer for a deep, sensual kiss. He indulged in her warm, soft lips, as his hands sharpened into a jab, stripping their clothes off with a single swing.

When he drew away, her face was flushed red while her breathing was labored. They had grown accustomed to each other, having slept together all the time when they traveled together, but the excitement that hung in the air was reminiscent of their first night together in Genora.

He longed for this energy.

He longed for this excitement.

He longed for this passion.

"Today... is a risky day," she spoke with a bashful, yet nervous tone of voice. "Do you... really want to do this?"

Her words triggered a ferocious desire in his heart as he felt blood gushing to his groin.

The atmosphere grew electric.

It tingled their nerves.

"Yes."

His tone of voice was intense, his ethereal eyes bore deep into the depths of her amber eyes.

Her cheeks reddened as her expression grew even bashful.

But she never broke eye contact.

"Then... let’s do it." Her voice was filled with emotion of affection, excitement, nervousness, and love. "Let’s start a family."

It was all Rui needed to hear.

That day, the National Center for Seismology recorded a small earthquake in the City of Vargard. The earthquake was considered a seismological anomaly as it came in a periodic rhythm at a clapping pace rather than discordant seismic radiation, causing many seismologists to try to identify its origin in an attempt to gain a better understanding of the seismic anomaly.

Strangely enough, their seismographs pointed to the origin of the earthquake being the Royal Palace. A task force was immediately deployed to try and understand where all this energy was coming from.
