The spear that would have assumed the moniker of Edge of Oblivion possessed a lot of hidden nuances.Ves never investigated them in depth in the past because he did not think it mattered.
He was wrong.
The Terran high-tier Destroyer spear possessed a unique charm that distinguished it from other Destroyer weapons or mech-grade equipment in general.
Blinky worked hard to accommodate each descending design spirit. His malleable spiritual form actively accommodated the presence of various familiar spiritual entities.
Though Ves had not interacted with them on a personal basis for a long time, their friendship had not diminished all that much.
Everyone was busy in the new age. The arrival of exotic radiation from Messier 87 had changed the rules for everyone, including his design spirits.
They not only gained another source of spiritual sustenance, but also gained new ways to exert and express their powers.
Each of them had been working alone or collaborating together on how they could best survive the Age of Dawn.
Unfortunately, not every design spirit responded to his summons. They likely did not have anything useful to say, so they did not bother showing up at this time.
Ves did not mind. It was a bit cumbersome on their part to divert a portion of their attention and forcibly descend onto Blinky.
There were plenty of other design spirits that proved to be more helpful.
After Vulcan, the Star Cat transformed in shape until he assumed the form of Zeigra, the former Crown Cat of Felixia I.
Of course, that identity might as well be ancient history to everyone. The current incarnation of Zeigra had far surpassed his former savage origins.
More complicated than that, Zeigra had already undergone a pretty mysterious but dangerous fusion with Ryncol Larkinson.
These days, it has become harder and harder to distinguish the two from each other!
Though Ves felt tempted to treat Zeigra as an incarnation of his father, the truth was a lot more complex.
Regardless of these issues, the powerful feline spirit possessed his own way of observing reality. He did not waste any time and immediately began to examine the tier 3 Destroyer spear from a distance.
After a few minutes of quiet observation, Zeigra finally conveyed his conclusions directly into Ves' mind.
The mech designer furrowed his brows. "I thought the Terrans built their high-tier equipment better. I never paid too much attention to the harm that it is causing to itself. I shouldn't be surprised that the high concentration of Destroyer particles is slowly wearing down the containment measures, but I still am. I suppose this is another consequence of the failed experiment."
Zeigra was most in tune with the concept of corrosion and degradation, particularly when applied to metallic objects.
From his inhuman perspective, the tier 3 Destroyer spear was not a stable object. It was an armament with an expiration date.
The lengthy shaft of the spear was solid enough, but it was also the least important part of the weapon.
What truly mattered was the speartip, which not only represented a highly complex and experimental piece of weapons engineering, but also contained one of the most dangerous extraordinary substances known to humanity.
Ves could not even begin to understand the interplay between different materials, alloys, proportions, shapes, electronics and other design elements.
That demanded a comprehension of Destroyer technology that exceeded his relatively basic level of understanding.
This was why he had overlooked the gradual degradation of the various internal systems responsible for containing, regulating and channeling the Destroyer particles.
Certain signs were more visible than others, but Ves was not able to understand the context and importance of each component.
If a dozen or so tiny and seemingly inconsequential components malfunctioned all at once, the front of the speartip could potentially explode, causing all of the Destroyer particles to escape, thereby rendering the precious Destroyer weapon useless!
Though the possible malfunction was unlikely to harm its wielder, Ves still did not feel pleased about it. The Terrans should have disclosed this piece of information to him. He did know why they declined to give him a warning. Perhaps they felt that he deserved to pay an idiot's tax for purchasing a piece of high technology that he did not fully understand.
"Whatever."
Zeigra's insights did not change the situation too much.
Sure, Ves became a lot more aware of potential faults, but he did not possess the skills to repair the volatile weapon.
If he attempted to disassemble the speartip in any way, the Destroyer particles would instantly spill out and demolish anything in its way!
The good news was that the inherently high quality of all of the components and materials meant that such a breakdown should not occur in the short term.
Perhaps the tier 3 Destroyer spear would only be at risk of breaking down after 20 or so years had passed. That was plenty of time for Saint Orfan to milk it for all it was worth.
Of course, the 'lifespan' of the powerful weapon was at risk of deteriorating a lot faster if it was being used to strike against very powerful opponents!
Despite these problems, Ves did not express too much concern.
"A superdimensional upgrade will fix everything."
Though he did not possess the capacity to perfectly repair the master smith's work, it didn't matter as long as he converted the Destroyer weapon into his own creation.
Though Ves still needed to figure out how to upgrade the speartip while keeping the Destroyer particles properly contained, that was much easier to accomplish than tinkering with another artisan's unique design applications.
"Thank you for your insights, Zeigra. You have potentially saved us from a massive loss in the future."
The feline design spirit nodded once towards Ves before he withdrew his formidable presence from Blinky's incorporeal form.
Ves continued with his routine.
When Trisk descended into his companion spirit and gazed at the powerful spear, the Free Bird could not help but become fixated on the Destroyer particles locked inside the high-tier weapon.
"Chirrup. Chirrup."
The design spirit treated the Destroyer weapon as a cage. It was clearly designed with containment in mind.
The Destroyer particles were never meant to be pressed up against each other so tightly.
They all yearned to be free.
Yet they could not. The design of the Destroyer weapon made it incredibly resilient against their destructive power. The inability for them to break their own cage only fed the agitation of the Destroyer particles!
"I never looked at this weapon from this angle." Ves said with interest in his voice. "Now that I think about it, the Destroyer particles have plenty of reasons to feel frustrated. They usually annihilate all obstacles in their way, but they cannot do so in the slightest when they remain in containment. Not only are they unable to destroy their own cage, they are also unable to demolish each other."
Destroyer particles clearly could not eliminate each other. They were absolutely immune to any sort of damage they inflicted on others.
This was incredibly frustrating for them as the more they were pressed into each other, the less they were able to properly exercise their power!
"Do you think that the Destroyer particles can be placated by letting them destroy a bunch of stuff every once in a while?" Ves asked the Free Bird.
"Chirrup…"
Trisk did not know whether that would help. Even the little bird could not determine whether the particles possessed life.
What she did manage to ascertain was that the Destroyer particles yearned for freedom in their own way.
"The greater their confinement, the stronger the backlash." Ves whispered.
He kind of felt bad even though there was no logical basis for it. It seemed cruel to exploit Destroyer particles by forcing them to inhabit a cramped environment that was tailor-made to prevent them from fulfilling their fundamental purpose on their own terms.
The only way the Destroyer particles could truly exercise their power was when the wielder of the cage took it out and utilized the weapon in battle!
This cycle of lengthy dormancy interspersed with brief but intense moments of release sounded like an incredibly frustrating and exploitative form of treatment.
If the Destroyer particles were truly alive, then they had every reason to hate and resent their treatment and those that sought to take advantage of their power!
This perfectly explained why Destroyer weapons always tried to kill their wielders no matter the circumstance, assuming that they possessed at least a semblance of intelligence and awareness!
It also explained why there was no hope of removing the risks associated with wielding the high-tier Destroyer weapon.
"Let's hear out the next spirit."
When Blinky accommodated the vast and strong mind of Titania, the former astral beast regarded the tier 3 Destroyer spear with a healthy dose of respect and vigilance.
She treated the Destroyer weapon as if it was a predator that was poised to pounce and strike at any time.
The Destroyer particles also lacked any deliberate form of coordination or cohesion. According to her senses, the powerful particles rejected each other just as much as anything else. She could not conceive of a way to bring them together and force them to work alongside each other in peace.
"Interesting." Ves rubbed his hairless chin in thought. "I always saw them as brothers and sisters. Yet despite sharing the same origin and nature, they harbor no kinship towards each other. How… sad."
The mystique surrounding Destroyer particles remained as strong as ever. Ves only accrued more questions about their properties and their potential.
He wanted to peel away the veil that obscured their secrets even more. Ves felt that it became increasingly more important for him to deduce the true nature of these extraordinary particles.
Arnold arrived after Titania.
The exobeast turned design spirit as well as Calabast's pet was not as well versed with power as others.
That was partially because he still remained anchored to his corporeal form. So long as he continued to live like a regular exobeast, he remained constrained on how much he could exercise his unnatural powers.
Still, the cute multi-legged beast remained helpful and cooperative, and that was all that mattered.
Ves initially did not think much of Arnold. He only summoned the alien design spirit in order to explore every possibility.
Yet it was the exobeast who was capable of splitting himself into dozens of parallel versions of himself that made the most surprising discovery.
"Squeak! Squeak!"
"Huh?! Are you sure about that, Arnold?!"
"Squeak squeak squeak!"
According to the latest design spirit, he clearly sensed that the Destroyer particles were not as separate from each other as everyone else thought.
Though Titania had not been able to detect any connections between them, Arnold held a different opinion.
While there were no literal bonds between them, Arnold felt that the particles were completely identical to each other!
Other than their coordinates and the amount of pressure they exerted onto their immediate surroundings, there were no other differences!
In fact, Arnold's conclusion went a lot further than that.
In his judgment, the Destroyer particles were not perfect copies of each other.
Instead, their true nature may be projections of a single Destroyer particle!
This conclusion sounded so outrageous to Ves that he found it difficult to believe that Arnold of all spirits could be correct.
Yet he could not immediately dismiss it out of hand. Though it sounded implausible for many reasons, it also explained many of the strangeness surrounding their existence.
It explained how the Terrans had always been able to maintain exclusivity over their Destroyer weapons.
No other group had been able to replicate them because they did not have access to the original Destroyer particle that was the source of all of the projected copies!
Ves even speculated that the Terrans could even withdraw the projected Destroyer particles from any existing Destroyer weapon if they wished!
They only needed to break the right connection to turn a powerful tier 3 Destroyer spear into an expensive lump of specialized alloys!
